So they are out 25 large?

aiiee [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 10:57:04 AM
And who's fault is that? Assholes deserve what they got. Nobody made them buy Saab. Usually, when managers agree to do stupid things, they get fired. At GM, they get a bailout. The sooner GM goes away for good, and new growth can replace those jobs, the better it is for everyone who isn't a creepy sh*t sucking GM manager. gah!

If there were a dealership closer than a hundred miles, I'd go and root through the trunks and glove compartments, just in case the dough got put there by mistake.

You'd have better luck looking up the noses.

In order to save money on future sales, buyers will now receive a large, flat box full of parts and will have to assemble the car on their own, using included hex wrenches.

Well I guess Koenigseggisseggggnignigsegigisegggg has to somehow improve on GM. I can't see that being a problem.

If the one my mother had in the late 80's was any indication, GM more than made up the difference in maintenance charges.

patrick767 [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 12:09:03 PM
But they made up for it with volume, right?

I have a Saab that's less than 5 years old.

Of course it's a Saab in name only. It's 90% Subaru.

I'm happy to have contributed to GM's downfall. I have not enjoyed a single GM vehicle I've driven in the past 5 years. I spend winters at a car rental business, and we have cars of pretty much every major make. GMs and Kias are consistently the worst. Kia you expect it from, but GM you sometimes hope their newest vehicle won't disappoint. But it does. It always does.

Nice, but I wouldn't buy anything from that shifty-looking guy. It's bound to be dripping with sardonic humor.

so that just a couple of grand less than what you have to spend to keep them on the road!

Snarfangel [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 01:31:49 PM
They should just call it *sob* so they can whine for another bailout.

Hagbardr [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 02:14:23 PM
Leave it to GM to come up with another Saab story. I'm still not buying anything from their wishlist.

Foaming [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 02:58:40 PM
That's okay, they make up for it by selling the games.

I'm starting to think maybe GM's financial troubles have something to do with them selling crappy cars.

GM lost $5,000 on every Saab sold in the last 5 years

So did anyone who had a waterpump break in their Saab...

/Well, older Saabs were like that.

Sudo_Make_Me_A_Sandwich: In order to save money on future sales, buyers will now receive a large, flat box full of parts and will have to assemble the car on their own, using included hex Torx wrenches.

I had one of these things. It was a fun car to drive, and it got great gas mileage compared to the amount of power it had (220 ft-lb of torque in a lightweight car with 6-speed), but the reliability sucked.

TeddyRooseveltsMustache [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 04:33:58 PM
Shouldn't that headline just say "GM lost"?

Nemo's Brother 2009-11-17 04:38:03 PM
How much do they lose by me refusing to ever buy a Government Motors car again?

apacheco 2009-11-17 04:39:25 PM
so why keep selling them?

Ah, the Saabaru. All the fun of a WRX, but with massive depreciation in value.

apacheco: so why keep selling them?

Because you have contracts with dealers making it more expensive to kill the brand than to keep it limping along. GM ended up paying something in the billions just to get out of its Oldsmobile contract with dealers.

The previous generation of Malibus are re-badged Saab 9-3s. While they didn't make money on the Saabs, I'm guessing they made a boatload on the Malibus.

When GM went into bankruptcy and asked the government to step and bail them out, it was amazing what the car czar found concerning conditions there.

The management at GM were essentially incompetent, they had no idea what they were doing or needed to do. Rick Wagoner was essentially isolated and somewhat confused about what was going on, his answer was to try to shift the blame to the unions.

When Wagoner was told he was being forced out, one of the first things he asked was whether or not Gettelfinger was fired too. Wagoner was just living on another planet.

Link (new window)

Only here could a CEO burn through $44 billion in 15 months and people choose to blame it on the unions.

Most franchises are covered under state franchise laws, not signed contracts with the dealership itself. In many states the laws are very, very restricting with regards to what action the franchiser can take or what penalties / remedies must be made in order to change the status of a franchise.

If I knew this earlier I'd have purchased a new Saab just to help GM go bankrupt faster.

/not really as GM builds crap
//Owned a Saab when still built by Swedish Airplane AB

Do you really think it's that easy?

The contracts were signed sometimes up to 50 years ago. This was especially true in the case of Oldsmobile.

My wife's saab is in the shop now. This car is so fussy. If it breaks down they can't just put a GM part in it. They have to order from "saab." Which takes an extra day to get. Who the fark thought of that?

FTFA: "GM Lost $5k On Every Saab Sold In The Last 8 Years"

Fark: "GM lost $5,000 on every Saab sold in the last 5 years"

Subby no good at the maths or engrish.

akula [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 05:41:30 PM
I'm not surprised. The cars just weren't competitive and didn't share much of any platform components, so they were expensive to produce in the quantities made (which then had to be sold in competition to cars that were cheaper to make).

The wife and I looked hard at a 9-5, but ended up not getting one. The dealer network was pitiful, the few ones out there didn't seem interested in even stocking a 9-5, and the $40,000+ price tag made it look pretty unattractive compared to the Acura TL and Infiniti G35. At $30K, it would have been competitive, and I imagine they had to sell some of them at that price.

No wonder they lost their asses.

I know Saab likes to say its "born from jets" however, I have this "cool story bro" to offer. I work at a place with lots of jet engine mechanics. fighter jets, not passenger planes. There are no saabs in the parking lot. Take that as you will.
