Surprisingly good choice. I might have gone with this, though.

Decade, I'll have to think about. My favorite this year, by far:

It's a decent album made almost unlistenable by the annoying fuzz effect on the vocals.

I think it was fantastically incredible, only to be destroyed by the meh-ness of their later works.

Haha I love Fark sometimes, people here are serious about Bad Religion, Wilco, Drive By Truckers and The Fall being contenders for album of the decade. The Strokes are far from my favorite band but they did a lot of good things for rock music and probably deserve this more than anybody, maybe Radiohead?

Is This It is a decent album. Pretty good, in fact.

Bad Religion, by contrast, hasn't done anything worth doing in just about 15 years.

There, I said it.

I'm actually surprised they didn't go with Kid A.

And what's strange about Bad Religion, Wilco, or DBT? OK, so DBT is probably a bit obscure and gimmicky for the snob rock crowd, but dammit, that's a hell of an album. The other two were probably considered. Critic types like them some Bad religion and Wilco (or as I call them, Country Beck).

Because a.) it is album of the decade, not best album, b.) those are all decent albums but by no means on the level of the top albums from the decade - not even close. Reading it closer, I see that they don't really have a criteria for the award, they just asked a bunch of people "what is the album of the decade?" I thought it had something to do with cultural significance, in which case these would be my top 4:

This is It
Kid A
Gorillaz
Jay-Z - Blueprint

DNRA and before reading these comments I was thinking it has to be a hip-hop album. They owned the decade, no question. I'm not the biggest fan of the rapz, but Jay-Z was the biggest figure in this genre and the Blueprint's among his best selling and critically-acclaimed. This decade was so bad for music, was there even anything close?

I read the headline again and see The Strokes, and it's hard not to lolz.

Oh come on, mocking Britain's best-of lists when it comes to rock is shooting fish in a barrel. They're crazy over there, which is weird because they've birthed so many fantastic bands. But they have this adoration for Oasis that's all out of proportion. And once they hook on to their new big thing they can't see straight. Or maybe that's just NME.

I'd give the edge to The Black Album partly because of the Grey Album fiasco/lawsuit that gave the mashup genre a thrust into the spotlight.

I can't follow your criteria. Does "cultural significance" mean influence or selling a lot of records? If it's influence, then I can sort of almost understand going with Jay Z except that I don't see much departure from the '90s. The sad fact is that Staind is probably more influential than the other 3 you mention. There's got to be some sort of quality consideration or you just wind up looking at sales figues. So, if it's album-that-best-represents-what-was-good-about-music-in-the-aughts, then I think Bad Religion and Wilco aren't ridiculous choices at all (DBT is still a ridiculous choice, but I'm a ridiculous guy). And Gorillaz? I love that record, but I just don't see it as album of the decade under any criteria. I'd put a White Stripes records in there first (which the list did).

Keywork99 2009-11-17 03:08:57 PM
My question is what qualifications does a album of the decade need? Good songs? That's subjective. Good production? Subjective again, depending on the genre.

The fact is that it's pretty much whoever making the list saying, "This is my favorite record of the last ten years," and not much other justification other than the fact they just liked it.

e-christ 2009-11-17 03:11:04 PM
I saw that god-awful "best songs of the decade" the other day that had all that pop crap on it, and it got me thinking on this subject. I actually was really leaning toward Is This It. It's an incredible album, and assuming that hitting the charts is pretty much a requirement (sorry, Ringworm and Kamelot faithful) it's one of the best you could choose.

Actually, if you look at the list in TFA, you can tell it's based on a fairly narrow categorical preference. It's not really "Top 50 albums of the decade," it's the "Top 50 albums that a white kid from the UK who listens primarily to rock, particularly the post-punk and garage revival stuff that has been popular in the last 10 years, and only listens to music that hits the charts and gets radio play, likes the most from the last 10 years."

Dear god, you have to be joking. YOu get made about Wilco and The Fall but think The Strokes were so massively important they deserve the top spot?

The strokes were a mediocre rock band who did nothing new, just recylced some old styles and got mainstream attention.

Yes, Radiohead is FAR FAR more deserving. So are Wilco. Neither would be my pick, but the Strokes is a joke. They shouldn't even make a top 25 list, much less top one!

Blueprint is a billion times better. Also more important. Gunny Highway: Mastodon - Blood Mountain

Gunny, I give you for serious super props for putting Baroness and Mastodon on your list. Blood Mountain is easily Mastodon's worst album though.

You think? I love all of them and chose BM mostly because it is my favorite (album has a connection to a time and place for me). I am happy to see them getting progier as their careers continue. Some people think it is a bad thing when bands change up their style but I find it refreshing.

Yeah I do kinda think. Maybe their new one is the worst. BM does have a few of my favorite songs, but I don't think it holds as well up all the way through.

Still brutal though. Remission #1 for me.

They put the newest album, Blueprint 3, on the list- so that's a bit of a FAIL.

Blueprint 3 is great, but The Black Album is maybe one of the most trancendent hip-hop albums of all time. If not the most trancendent and important. At the very least, its all of the above for the 2000's.
