I always saw stacks of these around the American University campus. I never bothered to read them - I'm a City Paper guy - but I was always glad to know it was there. This sucks. If any D.C. paper deserves to go down, it's The Washington Times.

We have the same problem here in Cincinnati. Citybeat ^ (free weekly) is having to deal with the the Cincinnati Enquirer's free print weekly now. You know how that goes.

Oh, so sad, the Internet is killing newspapers off.

I have no objection to any newspaper, whether they be gay, Christian, Muslim, Capitalist, Communist, Socialist, Anarchist, Black, White, Asian, Eskimo, or anything else. I really do not give a fark.

But newspaper publishers have to realize that digital communication will soon become the norm, and newspapers will be history.

Let me rephrase that. At least the Daily Dish, written by a gay Brit who is unapologetic about his HIV positive status, still writes some good stuff.

My encounter with the Blade.

One morning, while riding the orange line into DC I had a nice window seat with the aisle seat next to me open. Somewhere along the way a man large enough to fill three seats by himself decides it would be a swell idea to pry his 40 megaton mastodon carcass into the aisle seat next me. Half of him blubbering on to me, half in his seat and the other half left hanging into the aisle. Once the seismic activity of him sitting settled down he pulls out a copy of the Washington Blade. Oh joy of joys, I get to provide some 8000 pound man his alternate lifestyle jollies in a Tokyo subway grouping kinda way.

Years later and daily 20 minute showers in hydrochloric acid later I still don't feel clean.

huh, so years ago a fat guy had to sit down (most likely because he was fat) and he happened to be reading a gay paper so you a)thought something sexual was taking place, and b) still think about it while you shower?

Who has been found out that he doesn't practice safe sex, contradicts himself every 6 to 8 months, and frequently gets his ass handed to him on debate panels by people who actually know what they are doing (Wesley Clark knocking him down on Bill Maher has remained my favorite).

Not exactly a great role model.

/being gay I'm sadden that Dan Savage and Andrew Sullivan are looked at as gay 'spokesmen' by many people

Riding on the metro last time I was in DC. One of those was sitting on the seat by me. I had no idea what it was. Wondered why I got an extra friendly "Hi" from a couple dudes.

Wow. You seem to have trouble with view points that don't agree with your's. I bet you consider yourself tolerant, too.

I'm surprised you're not blaming 'homophobes' - whatever they are - on this because that is the typical progressive line: a liberal outlet fails and somehow it's the fault of every group that is right-of-center, starting with Christians and Republcians.

You need to stop being so bigoted.

Andrew Sullivan is actually unapologetic about being an HIV positive gay person. He believes that a "super-virus" will cure his HIV. By having more sex with HIV positive people he will become immune. That's what people who follow a holistic approach to curatives believe.

It's true. No matter how many fingers you have. That's what holistic medicine is about. Take more of what ails you and it will cure you.

A reasonable attempt, and you get some added difficulty points for trying to troll the Business tab. Unfortunately, it was pretty blatant, so I'll have to knock a few points off, and the creativity just wasn't there. 4/10.

Meh, good riddance to bad rubbish. Only redeeming part of the paper was the "biatches" page. The ex and I used to write in to that sometimes. :P

Sure I'll address your point. No, it wasn't the homophobes. Gay peeps are generally pretty tech saavy, and as Dialectic stated, there is Craigslist now for hookups, there's also plenty of other sites for that purpose, but they are usually pay sites. That was pretty much the main purpose of "gay media": eye candy and crusing for hookups.

I don't think I ever read a worthwhile in depth news story in any gay media outlet, including the one I used to write for. I did as much as I could with my little page, but businessmen in the gay media racket know what their audience wants - flesh not news. And those are usually the only types of advertisers you can get anyway. So it's a catch 22.

With the internet, there really is no purpose for gay media with the aforementioned flaws.
