If it was 1.35 million fewer than iPhone did in THIS week, I would care. In a comparison of launch weeks, of course iPhone is going to come out on top.

1. It was arguably the first MAJOR (capital MAJOR) smartphone.

2. It was widely rumored and advertised for a longer time than the Droid.

3. It had the Apple logo on it.

I heard about this phone about a month ago. Let's say I'm with another provider and my contract is up in a few months. I'm not going to go out and buy it before my contract is up. Duh. Give it another year.

As it happens, my contract with AT&T is up and the only thing stopping me from buying the Droid is the fact that the company I (indirectly) work for just got bought and I want to be 99.9% sure they're not going anywhere before I sign a new contract.

Don't know or care about the product talked about, but subby is an idiot.

FTFA: "Now, does that make the Droid an "iPhone killer"? As I've stated many times before, that's a phrase I refuse to use in any serious fashion"

TheOnion [TotalFark] 2009-11-16 08:48:10 PM
Apparently the iPhone was also sold in 9 countries during its first week, vs. the Droid's one. Though I'm sure the US would account for a plurality of those sold.

/The more you know

Really? The iPhone was released in the US on June 28, 2007 and in Europe on November 9, 2007.

propasaurus [TotalFark] 2009-11-16 09:19:06 PM
The article is a bit confusing, but it seems the 1.6 million sold figure is for the iPhone 3GS, not the first gen original iPhone. Which would account for the multi-national sales.
Of course, that also means that 2 years after the release of the original, with now a slew of imitators and other choices, 1.6 million people still bought a new iPhone in its first week of release.

Naturally, the only way to account for that is to say that people will buy anything with an Apple logo on it.

Yet another iPhone killer...

I took that directly from the article, which was in reference to the iPhone 3GS, and is this entire thread...

cambie [TotalFark] 2009-11-16 10:14:24 PM
The article points out that Apple users and owners of existing hardware are quite likely to buy any new shiny thing Apple produces. And this is the key to their success and the reason why all of these iPhone killers prove to be anything but.

Now excuse me while I play a game on my iPhone 3GS. And make calls while I'm pulling data from the network. Let's see your Droid do that.

Rickerkioz [TotalFark] 2009-11-16 10:29:54 PM
I enjoy my droid for the simple fact that it works where I live, whereas at&t did not.

Six or half a dozen, I've still got a cool phone that I like.

I went in to buy a Droid last week. I walked out with an Eris. My wife walked out going to AT&T because it was cheaper to quit & get an iPhone than it was to get an Eris/Droid off-contract.

I returned the Eris for a Droid because it didn't have Navigator (yet) and I hated the battery life.

Then I got buyer's remorse over being on a different network with my wife and missing out on family plan savings, so I left Verizon to be on AT&T with my wife ('cuz she wasn't about to give up her beloved iPhone).

Now I miss my Droid.

Le sigh.

I am not the King of Buyer's Remorse.

I am not the Emperor of Buyer's Remorse.

I am the God of Buyer's Remorse.

\buy a droid, the iPhone isn't nearly as fun

The iPhone killer will not be labeled the iPhone killer. It will be so substantial that the iPhone will no longer be worth mentioning.

It's nare impossible to compete with Jobs level of OCD when it comes to an area Jobs has chosen to focus on. Remember Jobs other company, Pixar? The guy is a force of nature.

It's probably better to find something Apple/Jobs hasn't focused on and emulate that level of fanatical development.

It's just hard to compete with a guy who considers death threatening medical conditions a mere hurdle to the work of kicking the shiat out of competitors. A rare CEO indeed.

Oh, I disagree entirely. The customizability of Android phones with widgets and such is lots of fun. I also think there are better free apps for Android.

Having tried both, there are only a few reasons why I'd choose the iPhone:

* More apps, but you also have to pay for a greater percentage of the good ones
* Ability to play songs you've downloaded from iTunes, without any fiddling or doing, ahem, less-than-legal things
* Easier to use; you can fiddle with your settings for mail, messaging, etc. all in one place rather than having to go into each application
* More home screens

Reasons to get a Droid:

* WIDGETS. I love widgets.
* Verizon's network is better
* Flash camera
* Nice integration between Facebook and contacts
* Free turn-by-turn Google navigator

Case in point, the Blackberry reigned before the iPhone arrived.

Was the iPhone labeled the BB killer? no.

It was labeled the coming of the iPhone, because Jobs developed a reputation for not only exceeding, but reinventing.

BB remains awesome, but it's losing to the iPhone. Beating the iPhone requires more than emulation, it requires delivering something on a level no one has seen.

FormlessOne 2009-11-17 12:01:46 AM
They're not just after the iPhone - they're after Windows Mobile 6.5, which made a rather dismal showing. (Sure, 7.0 is going to be killer, but given the turnover on mobile hardware, meh.) Google's pushing heavily into the portable market - mobile, netbooks, and so on - trying to cut Microsoft off at the knees.

I know, if it weren't for me drawing conclusions about the results the droid would be killing, right?

If anything, I'm suggesting the blueprint that will beat the iPhone.

Once again, if you want to be the new iPhone, you need to deliver a product that removes the iPhone from peoples consciousness.

How's that for drooling? Easier said than done though.

If Farkers were to develop an iPhone beater, what would it be? Can you beat Jobs level of creativity?

Alright, then give a little credit where credit is due, the guy makes products you like, or piss you off, cause you didn't think of it.

Replace most physical interaction with your phone through speakable interaction. Imagine how fast that would be for most phone functions.

Watch, wallet, cell phone, iPod, ID, individual credit cards, debit cards, library cards, membership cards, supermarket discount cards (all discount cards), gone. Tablet. Add any other function a tiny personal electronic device fills. Gone.

Anonymity, gone.

Convenience, plenty.

I've been with verizon forever, and their network is great. But their phones have always sucked major Donkey D. I was thrilled when I heard about Droid, and decided to give verizon one more chance before I headed to ATT. I have several jailbroken/unlocked Ipod Touches that I love, they are pretty much the best consumer electronics device I have ever used.
So I got a Droid, and in a lot of ways it is far better than an Iphone; other areas are lacking.
+: widgets, network coverage, out-of-the-box customizability, the GPS, and the 'window shade' alert feature. And the screen is gorgeous.
-: Camera (still pics need software update), battery life (bit weak right now, even with wifi and bluetooth off), and apps (app market has poor category names, poor viewing options, and very few apps. I.E.- no "medical" section, no google earth, no Epocrates, no role playing games.)
All in all, I love this phone. It has some really clever touches, and I think it and the Android OS are only going to get amazingly good.

I'd agree, if Microsoft's products didn't so consistently mimic what Apple is doing. Microsoft admits to cribbing from Apple for their GUI. (new window) Zune.

Xbox (Sega, Sony, Nintendo), keyboards and mice (Logitech), what does MS ever do first?

An OS for phones maybe, well, if you don't count that being done because of Palm.

Microsoft doesn't so much copy Apple as copy the same people apple is copying. If you're attempting to defend Apple's relative position as an innovator technologically rather than in marketing, picking on MS copying things doesn't really give you much of a moral high ground... in fact, you may be throwing things uphill. The last real change apple made to the industry that wasn't a modification of existing technology was the PC, which was a marketing move much more than a change in the actual technology involved (IBM had no trouble catching right up, for instance).

I mean, what are you claiming the Zune is copying, exactly? The I-Pod? Don't make me laugh. There are a bazillion media players around, have been since the 90s...

And the xBox is about as innovative as you get for a gaming console, the introduction of Live is still the only really successful iteration of the console-based network idea (fark you, Sony) and its features are being copied by everyone else in an effort to reproduce the success. The use of more generic hardware and a very standardized software architecture to make it easy to design for, while in keeping with Microsoft's usual design philosophy, can almost be called a stroke of genius since it got all the lazy developers who don't create cross-platform titles to just stick with MS in many cases.

That's not to say the "MS isn't usually innovative" position is wrong. They're a company based on what's safe, not necessarily what's new in most cases. They take industry standard features, expand the compatibility as much as possible, and improve the networking aspects as best they can while retaining a familiar interface. That's where most of their money comes from, and I agree, it's not a very original strategy (it's not intended to be). I'm just saying... you picked the one area where MS is a major innovator (the games division) to pick on their lack of innovation? Are you retarded?

//Not really picking on Apple here. As you probably picked up from my tone, I don't really hold a lack of originality against a company, MS, Apple, or otherwise. I do hold the fact that they charge an extra 100$ for a gadget to be white and extra shiny against them, but I've seen much worse from other industries (hi, jewelers) so it's not all that grating on my nerves. They do make cool gadgets, and they indirectly funnel a lot of money into what I do for a living, so I'm good with them.
