Doesn't matter what Cable thinks... the senile old man who owns the team thinks JaMarcus is a "great QB".

Plus he got over 35% completion percentage!!

37.5% and 67 yards is a complete and utter embarrassment. Even my Dolphins playing the wildcat don't get that few yards passing.

Pete King had this in his MMQB article.

This tells you everything you need to know about the stunningly bad inaccuracy of JaMarcus Russell: He's attempted 81 passes to Louis Murphy and Heyward-Bey ... and completed 22. Ridiculous.

Fark you, CBS. Did you really have to force Minnesotans to watch KC vs. Oakland yesterday? Really? In Minnesota?

I still hold that this may be the longest ive seen an NFL team stick with an awful QB. They need to start thinking about cutting their losses, cuz Russell is straight hot garbage.

i was dead wrong about russell coming out of college. i thought he would be an excellent QB. although sitting out all these games being a whiny biatch surely didn't help his cause, he still sucks far more than i thought he would.

The Raiders should have nabbed Brett Favre when they had the chance. Could have gotten a decent O-Line together for what they paid him.

I don't think CBS forces any station to pick a game. It is your affiliate that does that.

I wondered when he got benched, if Tom had to call up and ask for Al's permission first.

As a Chiefs fan, I was concerned when Russel wasn't in there

I always find it fascinating how short football execs memories are when the draft rolls around each year. Every year it seems people like Kiper go on and on like they have an absolute handle on who is good, who isn't, and everything in between. When consensus is reached and every follows the leader, guys like Russell cash in because everyone seemed to think it is a foregone conclusion that he had the talent to succeed.

It's always been, and always will be, a crapshoot.

Start mini Jruss. Gradkowski. He went 4 -12 for the bucs. The year before and after he started we went to the playoffs.

The raiders needed to bring in a QB coach to help him develop seeing as they invested so heavily in him, so instead they promoted a wife beating offensive line assistant to the head coach job.

I still remember watching on ESPN before his draft this guys "life story" about how poor he was and how he struggled growing up..yadda yadda yadda... but at the end of it when he was getting ready for the draft you see him pull up in a brand new Escalade with $2000 rims on each tire with his family and friends all around him. Do these guys get money before they even sign any contracts?

When Ronnie Brown throws the ball out of the wildcat formation, he looks ten times better than JaMarcus does.

I think it's because they're not really sure what they're looking for.

I heard Jaws talk once and he said QBs are such a crap shoot for several reasons. 1) Ratings are strongly based on physical attributes 2) NFL Scouts tend to be LB, DB and linemen. Rarely are they QBs. 3) The 'mental' aspect of the QB role is seldom evaluated.

I think if you fixed those 3 things, it would be less of a crap shoot.

How did Matt Ryan play his college career largely unnoticed, till the last 2 or 3 games. Rocket up draft boards and be an impact player @ QB position in year 1? Not because of his 40 time or because of his rocket powered arm.

Plus, with guys like Ryan, it wasn't just him. The team took several steps to improve. Whereas the Raiders consistently want fast guys without regard to if they can even play the game.

As if speed trumps hands, footwork, ability to read a D etc.

I think the story is they can take out loans, or actually their agents take out loans for them, on the basis that they'll make millions in a few weeks upon signing. Same way Lebron's mom gave him a new H2 hummer on his birthday while still in high school.

True, but intelligence in of itself isn't the end-all, be-all for sure when it comes to quarterbacks. Ty Detmer comes to mind.

Also, IIRC, Alex Smith was considered by far the smartest person in the 2005 draft. I remember watching a college gameday episode on ESPN his last year at Utah that was pretty much dedicated to "wow, Alex reads T.S Eliot. SO SMAHHT!!"

Brees can't see over his lineman while Russell can chuck it 80 yards. It's hard to not focus on measurable athleticism when the intangibles are so, um, elusive.

I had a dream the other night.... Oakland uses their first round pick on Tim Tebow.... I have been laughing at the thought ever since.

The irony and fail of such a situation would be EPIC.

The Christian Golden Boy of Football in the most notoriously mean and nasty franchise in the NFL? Not to mention they would have two QB/FB's....

Somebody please back me up that that would be hilarious..

Yea I actually bought into that garbage. they were hyping smith like crazy. Talking about how his family is deaf, and his ability to communicate with his hands was pivotal in his development. I definetly got stupider watching that draft.

That's why I put 'mental' and not intelligence. There have been several, very good QBs who couldn't tell you the answer to 2 + 2 if you gave them a calculator and a math tutor.

To me, mental includes intelligence, understanding the game (such as tendencies of other players), awareness of the situation (cf: Tony throw-the-ball-away-on-4th-down Romo), ability to handle criticism (cf: Ryan Leaf), and ability to motivate/lead your team (cf: Elivs Grbac)

Some of that stuff you probably can't scout ahead of time. But a majority of it is overlooked by Mr. Draft Mel Kiper, who exists pretty much as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

This might be due to the fact that Ronnie Brown is actually in shape whereas Jamarcus's elbow smacks his biatch tits every time he throws. Messes up his accuracy.

I agree; I think "decisiveness" is the most important mental element of being a quarterback. Processing a multitude of information pre-snap, then again in ideally under 3 seconds while in the pocket.

Russell is just the latest example behind the idea that the NFL needs to mandate the pay scale for drafted rookies. Just because the guy is a #1 pick doesn't mean dick all - at this point Jokeland is looking pretty foolish for letting this piece of trash hold out for so long and still blessing him with a contract.

Raiders did #2 with Billy Joe Hobert(his sole purpose was the throw hail marys), so it's a possibility.

BobNesta420 2009-11-16 02:11:22 PM
I'm starting to think that all of these front-loaded contracts are nothing but trouble. You guarantee a guy so many millions before he ever takes a snap, what's his motivation to perform? Whether he's a pro-bowler or a complete flop, he's guaranteed $31.5 million.

For a guy who wanted to reach the NFL for the payday, and nothing else, he can walk away right now being set for life. That's got to be the toughest thing to determine before a guy gets to the NFL - how much he cares about the game, and about winning. Jamarcus, clearly, doesn't give a shiat about either.

Mike_LowELL [TotalFark] 2009-11-16 02:13:19 PM
The only people who think Russell has any potential are Vince Young apologists that get the two mixed up.

Is it too early to consider JaBust the worst #1 overall pick ever? He's certainly in the conversation
