That people love their pets, that pets need to be groomed, and that people will happily pay a reasonable price for the convenience of a groomer coming to you?

I'm going to go with, we are a decadent and depraved culture the likes of which hasn't been seen since the fall of the Roman Empire. I'm going to blame it on either the lack of Jesus, or fatties.

The Romans had Jesus and vomitoriums so they could eat like pigs and remain thin. So that wasn't there problem. It was probably the horse drawn dog washing cart.

A basic service starts at $55, which includes a bath, trim and style, cleaning and deodorizing of ears, anal gland expulsion and nail trim.

What dog wouldn't love that?

Because even during a recession, people are lazy? And fail to prioritize?

"Let's see, I need to pay the mortgage, and I have the overdue electric bill... *pays mortgage*... OH! Fido needs a bath! I'd better call 'Pet Baths on Wheels!!'... I'm sure the electricity will stay on for a week or two until I get my welfare check again..."

If people have money, I don't care how they spend it, as long as they're not hurting anybody. They may be stupid, but that's not my problem.

That we are a homeless, vagrant species, plaguing the land like a quadrillion maggots infesting the intestines of the planet? That our days are numbered, and we are trying to delude ourselves of our importance by making little shows of our impertinence, lack of originality, and banal parroting of the status quo?

Aw, what the hell, lack of Jesus it is.

That's a good one, though I have yet to see a poster with Jesus warning me not to wash my pet before eating it. Or something like that ;)

It's not the mobile pet cleaners that surprise me. I kind of get that. It's the mobile dog poop collectors. Seriously, I've been seeing these vans around here promising pet waste removal at your house and last week when I went to Texas, sure enough, I spotted at least 3 of them in one weekend.

Really? Getting out a plastic baggie is really too big a hassle for you? However, it may be brilliant for a Realtor trying to sell a house where the owners are gone and there's dog crap every where. Also might get a nice check from the county if they sweep through parks once a week too. But for a personal house and use? Seriously?

Mobile pet grooming services are primarily used by wealthier types, people whose investment portfolios may have been harmed by the recession, but who remain comfortably wealthy enough to afford most of their standard-of-living perks.

Our society is made up of mostly lower to middle class people, who definitely are feeling most of the pain from these economically down times, but who don't really use mobile pet grooming services in the first place.

So it doesn't really say anything about our society.

waxingpolemic 2009-11-16 10:04:44 AM
My parents have a dog that has to be groomed. It would not be humane if she weren't properly groomed, because she's a schnauzer and gets matted very easily.

But, my parents, like many people THEIR AGE (70's) can't really WASH A DOG anymore, let alone, cut and comb the little f*&ker.

I love how on Fark that EVERY PERSON LIVING is literally 30. Mobile grooming is HUGE where I live because there are so MANY elderly, and fatties.

For the elderly, MANY of these services and others (Lawn mowing, waste removal, shoveling snow,) are not luxuries, but necessities.

Subby is a douche.

Wealth has nothing to do with it.
I had a cat that had to be massively doped up before traveling, as he became extremely aggressive when his crate came out of the closet. About 3 years ago, the maintenance man at the apartment complex I was living at left the door open, and he got out, and the dipshiat cat tangled with a skunk. Thank god for mobile pet grooming, otherwise my car would have never been the same.

And people, $55 isnt all that much. It costs me about that much to bring my dog to PetSmart, if not more, for wash/cut and I have to bring her there. For $55 for them to come to me? Sign me up

Bacontastesgood 2009-11-16 10:08:14 AM
People are still paying $2-3 for a cup of coffee they could brew at home for about $0.20. Thermos makers are weeping though.

I hate the cliche, but I do have to admit that NOW truly is a great time to start a business. Costs are low, people need work, and the market for most goods and services can only get better. Do it right and ride the wave.

tell you what it says.

the wealth concentration is the highest that its ever been in this Nation.

the wealth gap is the largest its ever been in this Nation's history.

the ones doing the doggie grooming thing are the same tax dodgers who were rewarded by reagan and the bushies tax cuts and other favors, at the expense of the other 95% of the population.

the middle/working classes are doing a whole lot of doggie grooming. they have bigger concerns.

Many longer haired breeds can be a pain in the ass to keep from matting. Cats aren't the easiest animals to hold down if they don't want to be held down.

I've had a couple relatively long hair cats in my day, and the only problem I've ever had is to have to cut poop out of the fur on their backside. Kinda gross, but I guess that is why I have a pair of scissors specifically for that purpose.

Portland, OR is rife with these franchises. I blame the aging boomer professionals for this phenomenon...

This is basically washing the dogs butt. Dogs butts don't get washed very well typically, this leads to your dog dragging its butt on the carpet. Which is a good sign your dogs needs "anal gland expulsion"

If your dog has problems there and constantly "scooting" her way across the carpet, yeah, she will love it after the fact. I usually have the vet do that, though.

My neighbors dog was doing that all over her front yard, and she kept yelling at the poor mutt until the wife explained what it was doing, and showed the dogs owner how to express it. That was one happy dog.

If my pet required anal gland expulsion, I would gladly pay $55 for somebody else to do it.

But something tells me that the kind of people who get pet grooming aren't the type to be told they need to start saving money... whether they can afford it or not.
