I used to have that first Styx album. The title song and Krakatoa were pretty cool (i a cheesy way) for their time.

Shel Silverstein was on the list, so it's not all bad.

Pardon the threadjack, but Weird Al mentions "They're coming to take me away ha ha!". Did that song scare the piss out of anyone else besides me and the one guy in the comments section?

No_One_Special 2009-11-16 05:27:56 AM
The best thing about "They're coming to take me away HA HA!" is that the B-side on the single is just the same song backwards. Crazy good stuff.

How far out in left field am I? I once got a strange look from Weird Al. I got to meet him after a show back in 2000. Most of the people there were asking him to sign albums, ticket stubs, stuff like that. He didn't quite know what to think when I asked him to sign my leisure suit and had my incredibly pregnant wife watching and laughing like mad.
How pregnant was my wife? The concert was on a Friday night. She had an appointment with the baby doctor the Wed. before and the doctor wanted to do some stuff to make her go into labor a bit earlier but I said NO! because we had Weird Al tickets that weekend. The doctor didn't quite know how to take that.
To be fair, they were really good seats.

PLEXIGLASS TOILETTE! Man, it's been decades since I heard that song. They've removed it from all their omnibus sets. It was atrocious, but pretty funny.

That's actually the first entry on the list... reading comprehension FTW!

I actually thought that the list was pretty spot on. Most of the things that people are mentioning are intentionally funny songs.

My personal addition to the list would be Pink Floyd's "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With a Pict"

I'd hardly call that underrated. He did mention the songs Silverstein performed himself though.

No Ray Stevens!?! Yes, they did call him 'The Streaker'.

BTW, 'Boy Named Sue' is covered under Shel Silverstein as he wrote it.

'Weird' Al is above your petty criticisms.

The Prince list was a hoot but Al forgets to mention that technically he doesn't need Prince's approval but won't do a paraody without it.

This is kinda cool in a weird (Al) way but now I wish Al would just do it.

Tonio K is a great, neglected talent.

'I'm talkin about the good life.
In the food chain.
Love among the ruins...'

Prince probably hasn't forgiven Al for destroying Michael Jackson's career. (It was pretty much all downhill after "Eat It" came out.)

Holy Christ, I haven't heard "The Test of Love and Sex" for at least 20 years. Looking at the description, I had no idea. As soon as I clicked the video, it all came back. Weird little song.

I believe Prince is pretty much one of the only ones to continually turn him down.

As he likes to ask because it's still similar to the original song. He did the James Blunt one where Blunt himself said go for it, yet his record company sued al and would not allow a release on an album, so he made a full video and released it for free.

Al is a stand up guy. and I'm also close personal friends of his.

I always loved the line from Boy Crazy.

List is missing "Sometimes I Don't Mind" by The Suicide Machines.

There's something with the way you walk
There's something there that lights a spark inside of me
And it makes me want to sing
Makes me forget everything
There's something there inside your eyes
Lets me know you'd never lie
You fill me up and I know what you need
Do you know what you mean to me?

CHORUS: Well I watch you sleep sometimes and it feels like the first time
And you're always on my mind
Everyday is like the first day
And I talk to you sometimes even though you never talk back
And I buy you things sometimes 'cause I don't mind

There's something strange, I can't get mad
Even when you're being bad - just look at me, and I forget everything
I try but I can't be mean
You sit by me and I scratch your back
You lick my hands then I get a rash, but that's okay
Because we, we are a team
You make a mess and then I clean

[CHORUS]

There's something with the way you act
Makes me laugh when you chase the cat
You chase him around
And when it's close to feeding time, you stare at me and whine
You won't lay down, you'll hardly sit
I give you a bath when you smell like s***
But you don't mind
And we go out every now and then
And when you're done then we come back in

[CHORUS]

That is correct. Serpent came out less than a year after Styx II which had the hit 'Lady' (which was not a hit until 1975, 3 years after it came out)

Huge Styx fan here... seen the band 6 times along with Dennis De Young solo. Been a fan for 10 years and own lots of Vinyl and CD's.

douchebag/hater: Tonio K is a great, neglected talent.

Seriously! I was shocked to see him in the list, nobody knows who he is. 'You Will Go Free' is one of my favorite songs ever.

Between learning that Weird Al is a Tonio K fan and that Jack White is going to produce a Wanda Jackson album, this has been a superlative day for music news. For me and my particular interests.

Here's some live Neko Case just to make the world that much more awesome: Deep Red Bells (new window)

Also missing: "I'll race" by Slick Rick from Bye Bye Greasy.
