It's a very hard list to argue with.

I'm still waiting for one of these lists to include MN's Surly, but they had my other 2 favorite breweries, so 2/3 aint bad.

Pretty decent list.

dj_bigbird: Pretty decent list.

Yeah but Dogfish? Seriously, they thing Dogfish is the number one brewery in America? That aside, I think they covered all of my favorite American, non-regional brews. I was pleased that Bell's got a high-ranking, since two-hearted and oberon are both excellent beers. New Belgium is a very decent brewery, and I'm glad they made the list, even if it's only the end.

This list does give me a few new breweries to try out though.

Hooray for New Glarus. I can't wait to go back to Wisconsin next week and get a six pack (or 10).

Why not?
When Dogfish Head is good, they're amazing. I think there's an unfortunately tendency to brew obscenely strong beers just for the sake of doing it. But y'know, they usually have excellent quality.

I believe I've heard of ONE from that list and never had any of them (though I'd love to give them a try).

I'm very happy about #2. They make some amazing beers.

A good list.

But, really, Sierra Nevada behind those fine folks from Petaluma?

And no Anchor Steam?

I disagree.

Dwight_Yeast 2009-11-16 12:25:17 AM
Dogfish as number one? Nah.

Glad to see Victory on there, but the fact that Yards is missing is shocking.

Whoopa Fadoopa 2009-11-16 12:26:33 AM
Good breweries all, but where's Point Beer from Steven's Point Wisconsin? They're probably too small, the advertising tag line is: "When you're out of (Steven's) Point, you're out of beer". Mighty fine suds though, if I do say.

never odd or even 2009-11-16 12:30:22 AM
I hate Dogfish Head, bullshiat on them being #1. There are much more higher quality breweries that don't overcharge for their beer. I bought a 4 pack of their seasonal pumpkin ale for $10 the other day and it tasted like crap. The 90 minute ipa is mediocre but expensive. I'm sure the 120 minute is good but I'll never know because I'll never pay $8 for a 12 ounce beer at a liquor store. I went to a Dogfish Head restaurant once and they charged well over $10 for a decent 12 ounce, even for their own beer.

I'd put Russian River, Lagunitas, Founder's, Great Divide, Odell's, Left Hand, Stone, Samuel Smith, Victory, Avery, Flying Dog, and Elysian way way ahead of Dogfish Head in quality.

I loved their 'Nude Beach'.

Also, what about Big Sky Brewery? Moose Drool FTW!

Oh shiat, I forgot about Big Sky. Moose Drool and Powder Hound too. I have some of their pint glasses in my freezer at this moment.

The fact that this beer is on tap all throughout the Midwest, putting a Craft Beer right next to the BMCs of the world, gets props from me.

This may be the first list of this sort where I've seen the majority of people agree that it's decent. Wow.

Sam Adams is the only beer that makes me want to vomit. Not like at first, but a half hour later. I can have 10 beers of any other label and not want to puke, but one Sam Adams and nausea city.

Pliny the Elder is my favorite beer ever. Pliny the Younger is supposed to be on tap in a few months at a few bars in Denver, I can't wait to try it out.

DIAF. Sierra Nevada is no longer a microbrew since they were sold. The 90's are over. Plus their beer is nasty.

New Glarus made the list, awesome!

Good Beer that.

/but not Red Squirrel, that stuff is unpleasing to me

Other good beers from Wisconsin

Horny Goat
Gray's (mostly because they are from my home town)

mrgromit 2009-11-16 12:50:07 AM
Pretty solid list. I'd move around a few of them a notch or two, but that's only personal taste. Others I think should make the list are mostly regional, so I can't ding them for that.

But Rogue hasn't been based in Ashland for at least 15 years, guys. Newport, OR, is where they're based and brewed, aside from their brewpubs. Heck, I don't even think they still have a storefront down in Ashland anymore.

shivashakti: When Dogfish Head is good, they're amazing. I think there's an unfortunately tendency to brew obscenely strong beers just for the sake of doing it. But y'know, they usually have excellent qualit

That's just it: they seem to fill a number of niches, and they do what they do very well, but other smaller breweries seem to provide more well-balanced, better beers on the whole. They're a great place for beer experimentation, but I won't go there for beer perfection.

I did not see that they were on the list until after you said something. My eye is twitching in anger. Seriously. Sam Adams is NOT A MICROBREW. The commercials on my tv every 1/2 hour completely debunk this. Who wrote this article? Did they not leave the 1990s?

Surprised Anchor beers didn't make the list. Otherwise, it seems a bit west coast heavy. Not that those beers aren't great, but I'll never see many of them here in the east. Glad to see Dogfish Head up there, though.

Sorry, when it comes to products that are plant-based, the west just wins.
