Excellent choice admin :D

This week I'm listening to:

Skeletonwitch - Breathing The Fire
Finntroll - Nattfodd
Slayer - World Painted Blood
Sonata Arctica - The Days of Gray
3 Inches of Blood - Here Waits Thy Doom

/subby

CanadianCommie [TotalFark] 2009-11-15 01:43:49 PM
also, for those that actually watch the video, the women fighting at the start is good, but about halfway through the video there's a double-zoom on the boobs of one of the wenches behind the band, which I thought was both hilarious and exactly what I would expect from a 3IOB video.

BigSnatch [TotalFark] 2009-11-15 02:19:07 PM
Of all the 3 Inches of Blood songs I've heard, that one was the best. That said, it wasn't really my cup of tea but I did like the main riff.

I've been revisiting Kromlek's 2007 release, Strange Rumors...Distant Tremors. It's now becoming a big time favorite of mine and I can't figure out why. It's not Earth shattering or anything like that, I just think it's very well done.

Reminded me of some old school Metal Church. Very nice.

Nice vid, especially luv teh Boobies. I don't think the Farkettes visit the SHMHC threads too much, so sadly no BIE threadjack.

wow that was bad...not nearly enough boobs to make up for the shiatastic music

I approve of this song and video.

A biatcheesy for my taste, but kind of fun.

Somebody posted about Giant Squid in the last thread towards the end, so a bunch of people probably missed it. I got pretty into it and ordered the CD, so I figured I'd throw something out by them...

Giant Squid - Sevengill (Notorynchus Cepedianus)

Ok, without watching the video, I have to say 3"oB pisses me off. It seems like a band who exists as way so hipster douches can make fun of metal.

And here I wanted to put a big H in the SHMHC with the new Isis video (new window)

SPna15 2009-11-15 03:05:31 PM
Decent song, nothing that standout about it though. Video had too much shaky-cam and too little girls.

Listening to Askival again this week. Still awesome.

RaptorLC 2009-11-15 03:05:57 PM
Hrm, new 3IoB album out or coming out? I was not aware of that.

It's rare that a band can out-cheese Dream Evil and approach the all time kings of cheese in Manowar, but they do it quite nicely.

I guess we've gone full circle from ridiculous 80's metal music, to parody of ridiculous 80's music, and back to people taking that sound seriously again. I just laugh when I hear vocals like that. +1

Whiteston 2009-11-15 03:57:58 PM
Dudes, it's 3 Inches of Blood. They put on an excellent show btw. However, if they ever get too big they'll probably over do it and ruin the whole thing.

The best? No, but way better than most of their contemporaries like crappy Lamb of God, etc.

The Icelander [TotalFark] 2009-11-15 03:58:52 PM
I didn't see any boobs.

TheDoubleMan 2009-11-15 03:58:57 PM
I saw them open for Type O Negative a couple years ago, and was not impressed. They sounded like a low-grade Iron Maiden
/Type O was on that night tho
//So was Hemlock

Saw this earlier this week... I dig it. It's cheesy, but it perfectly suits the music.

CanadianCommie: Finntroll - Nattfodd

I approve.

BigSnatch: I've been revisiting Kromlek's 2007 release, Strange Rumors...Distant Tremors. It's now becoming a big time favorite of mine and I can't figure out why. It's not Earth shattering or anything like that, I just think it's very well done.

Haven't listened to that one in a while... it is a good album, although I find that Kromlek isn't as memorable as other folk-metal bands like Finntroll, Ensiferum, and Turisas.

Anyway, stuff I've been listening to this week:

Koffin Kats - Forever For Hire: I occasionally get a hankerin' for some Psychobilly, and these guys are my favorite. The new album is everything that's great about psychobilly: B-movie horror lyrics, stand-up bass, vocals that fall somewhere between Elvis and Danzig... Awesome.

Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures: There are a lot of people who don't feel that this supergroup (consisting of Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and John Paul Jones) doesn't live up to the hype. I'm not one of them. Great album.

Skyclad - In The... All Together: Skyclad is one of the original folk-metal bands, and they're one of the best still. They haven't had Martin Walkiyer at vocals for a few albums, but their latest album is excellent. Those of you who have an aversion to harsh vocals should like these guys.

Velcra - Between Force And Fate: Finnish industrial rock/metal with a female singer. They sound a bit like KMFDM crossed with Guano Apes, with a little KMFDM mixed in.

This weeks music selection for me is

Augury - Fragmentary Evidence
Obscura - Cosmogenesis
The Faceless - Planetary Duality

been in a tech death mood lately.

Nice... have you listened to the new Gorod album? If you like the albums you listed, you should love Gorod. It's my album of the year, more than likely.

Listen to Hellwitch, because Gorod is overrated.

Overrated to you, maybe... considering that he's listening to Augury, Obscura, and The Faceless, Gorod would be right up his alley. Hellwitch is decent, but I still barely consider them to be tech-death so much as old-school death metal.

Erm.... 3IoB is a metal band. Lamb of God is an utter shiat hardcore band trying to masquerade as metal.

I'll take metal cheese over poser garbage any day of the week.

I consider Hellwitch to be tech-death the same way I consider Atheist and Demilich to be tech-death.

Recent finds rummaging around the Chinese metal hinterlands:

Ego Fall: Spirit of Mongolia I like that metal means doing whatever you damn well please. Opening a track with a minute of throat singing? Sure, you can do that. Be sure to use a wolf that's not found anywhere near Mongolia for your cover art, too.

Nightingale: Reflections in the Lake Buzz-drenched female-fronted almost-Gothic metal with clean vocals. (In Mandarin, if I had to guess)

Midwinter: Enthrone in Blizzard True kult and grim pagan black metal. (In fact it almost sounds French to me, though it's probably not weird enough for LLN)

Also, Empylver gets a special mention, not for being any good, but for giving me a laugh: halfway through "Wood Woud Would" there's a 90 second interlude which consists of the artist reciting these lines from 'The 13th Warrior', thick Chinese accent and all, while a bagpiper plays 'Amazing Grace' in the background.

Metal means doing whatever you want. Sometimes it's awesome, sometimes it's hilarious. And sometimes the clash of ideas nearly opens a crack in your skull.

SPna15: I consider Hellwitch to be tech-death the same way I consider Atheist and Demilich to be tech-death.

I guess I don't really think of Atheist as tech-death, although I suppose they would be. Demilich, well, I listened to Nespithe once and the vocals utterly ruined it for me. In the end, that's all I can remember about that album: the vocalist who sounds like he's trying to belch the alphabet. So I don't recall if they were at all technical.

Also, DemiGodRaven, I forgot to mention a couple other excellent tech-death bands: Fleshgod Apocalypse, Nexus, and of course, Necrophagist. (Disregard if you've listened to any of these bands.)

Necrophagist in 7 seconds.

Heh... that's what I like about them. I don't understand all the backlash against 'weedly-weedly' tech-death... that's how I like it. Otherwise it gets boring. That's the main reason I hate Gorguts.

I listen to them every now and again, but they always sound like machines playing death metal, which is my main complaint against newer tech-death (that somehow Origin escapes from, even though they sound like a machine).

Origin definitely sounds like a machine. Still, I like the newer tech-death... just serves to reinforce that peoples' tastes are subjective.

Yeah, on one hand it's cool to hear them branch out beyond bass/drums/vocals, but it also seems to be very much not what Om is about. However, Sunn O))) did a great job of incorporating a larger palette of instrumentation on Monoliths and Dimensions
