According to a blog about the town, a grand jury is looking into more corruption and a couple officers have resigned recently.

It looks like the cop was also a private attorney. His private client was owed $9,000, so he put on his cop outfit and confronted the debtor, threatening to arrest him unless he paid up.

In that incident, Cohen, armed and in uniform, went into the business officer of Timothy A. Hills and demanded payment of $9,000

Sounds painful

Interesting insight into their thinking: Cops get convicted of running a little criminal enterprise. They bill the city for their defense, because in their eyes the crimes they commit are done under the authority of their employer. This is why I don't trust cops: They do whatever they please and feel they're entitled to full immunity under the color of law.

Basically, it's more of: "Us beating you up isn't a crime -- it can't be, because we're the cops!"

Nothing but "above the law" crap.

The Chief/Sheriff of places like this should all have a policy along the lines of "If I find out your corrupt I'll kill you myself and it'll be suicide by cop."

Oh and "Tough Town" Stoughton is full of retards.

And of course the chief tried to cover it up.

Well, if he was not guilty, then he shouldn't suffer loss from having to defend himself from false charges...

Wait, he WAS guilty? And he spent all that time slowing down the inevitable, and the already overburdened court system in the process? I think, and it is really hard to keep score given everything that is going on, but it appears they have had 4 police chiefs in 5 years.

The guy needs a stint in PMITA prison to help him revaluate his goals and objectives.

They'll probably have to give him the accrued vacation time, as it is considered wages already earned. The sick time and all the rest, I don't know.

Town residents are on the side of the dirty cops. They recalled the selectmen who wanted to clean up the department and elected new guys who reinstated the corrupt chief. When their guy was indicted they felt they had to remove him from power, but they did a favor by keeping him on paid status. The chief is on a renewable contract, not civil service, and they didn't have to do that. As I recall the whole mess really got started over a routine decision not to renew his contract.

Umm. This is "the most unpatriotic town in America" because they refused to pay a firefighter overtime he wasn't working and refused to pay him a uniform allowance for a uniform he was wearing, but readily agreed to pay the difference between the town pay and his military pay.

I've been removed from that area for too long, I underestimated their corruption/retardation.

Wouldn't he still be entitled to his accrued vacation pay....if he accrued it while actually working? Or is he counting his time before he actually got "fired"?

Most cops have a morality clause in their contract that says that they lose all accrued time etc if they're terminated because they're convicted of a crime.

He should get nothing. And also lose all accrued sick pay, pension, etc.

I'm from Stoughton, too, so this is just entertaining as heck to me.

We had a staffer who had been written up for disciplinary action several times. After her last writeup (which would have been her last, as she was gonna get canned if she was written up again) she decided to contest it. she goes to the main office for several days to talk to upper management about it....and when she returns she has the balls to asked to be paid for (a) her lodging, (b) her food, (c) her gas and (d) her time off, since she had depleted all of her sick and vacation leave.

I saw that and I laughed so hard that I almost pulled something. Someone in management actually thought they SHOULD pay her for all of that. Luckily someone higher up gave them the UFIA.

The real solution is to make sure the reasoning for all discretionary decisions by any agent of government from dmv clerk to POTUS are documented and publicly available. That way corruption would be immediately visible. And of course the penalty for failure to provide adequate documentation would be summery dismissal and prohibition from ever holding a taxpayer funded position again in the future.
