Its ok, the firemen will be burning them in a couple of years anyway.

While I'm always glad to see someone owning up to his mistakes, buy new copies of the books and donate the remainder to the library for things they could use, such as salaries, infrastructure, & c.

Because the library is a commons resource, and without punitive measures for over-extraction it will quickly be exploited.

Or, as the librarian in the article plans to do, use the extra fine money to buy more (different) books.

A quick search of the Fiction bestsellers of 1959 reveals probable causes of why it took so long to return it:

3. Hawaii, James Michener
- Was probably bored comatose

5. Lady Chatterley's Lover, D. H. Lawrence
8. Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov
9. Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris, Paul Gallico
- Let's just say "ceiling cat" was involved.

10. Poor No More, Robert Ruark
- Took 50 years to get the advice right!

I accidentally packed up four library books when I moved once. Ended up keeping them for about four years before I finally opened that box. The library's maximum fine, thank god, was $5 per book. So, I mailed them back with a check for the fines plus a little more as a donation (nothing approaching $1000) and they were happy.

That's a true story.

Dandylion 2009-11-15 08:50:03 AM
Good on him for returning the books.

I'm glad the school will let the librarian buy more books with the money. School libraries are typically underfunded.

I did the same thing.. Two houses later I found the books, and returned them with a $175 fine. No limit at my library. I still got off better than in college. Those bastards locked up my transcripts because I didn't pay a $200 fine, even though I returned the books. That was straight out extortion. I still have not seen my transcripts after 10 years, just on principle. (Principal? I didn't get much out of college...)

Well, let me tell you something, funny boy. Y'know that little stamp, the one that says "New York Public Library"? Well that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole hell of a lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before: Flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. What's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Well, let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me. Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world, but what about that kid, sitting down, opening a book, right now, in a branch at the local library and finding drawings of pee-pees and wee-wees on the Cat in the Hat and the Five Chinese Brothers? Doesn't HE deserve better? Look. If you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped! Or: maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld; maybe that's how y'get your kicks. You and your good-time buddies. Well I got a flash for ya, joy-boy: Party time is over. Y'got seven days, Seinfeld. That is one week!

Very much so.

Our library occasionally gets back items checked out twenty or thirty years before. Most often its a professor who misplaced one of our books in his/her office and found it when they retired and cleaned out the office. They NEVER include fees to cover fines.

George: Clarence...

Clarence: Yes, George?

George: Where's Mary?

Clarence: Oh, well, I can't ...

George: I don't know how you know these things, but tell me where is she?

Clarence: I...

George: If you know where she is, tell me where my wife is.

Clarence: I'm not supposed to tell.

George: [grabs him by the collar] Clarence, tell me where she is!

Clarence: You're not going to like it, George.

George: [shouting] Where is she?

Clarence: She's an old maid. She never married.

George: [choking him] Where's Mary? Where is she?

Clarence: She's...

George: WHERE IS SHE?

Clarence: She's just about to close up THE LIBRARY!

Apparently, in those days, there was no greater horror than for a woman to end up a librarian.

Even my university limited fines to the value of the book. Of course, they would give you an empty tube instead of a diploma if you owed more than a few bucks.

DNRTFL, but I did search it beforehand and found out that I was mistaken all this time. I still think it would be much more clear if D stood for "Did," and DN stood for "Did not."

Now I will proceed to sit in a corner and cry in shame. Or I will set myself on fire.

Sam Donaldson spoke at my college graduation. He took the opportunity to return a book someone in his family, I believe his mother, had taken from the library something like 70 years earlier. He didn't pay the fine though.
