The RCMP constable decided to put the moose out of its misery and prevent a possible highway accident, say documents obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.

The constable discharged his pistol twice into the moose's head, which brought the animal to a stop but did not kill it.

The Mountie "then requested that (the) CBSA intelligence officer ... euthanize the moose based on his known familiarity with livestock," says an official report into the incident.

The border services officer "discharged one round from his CBSA duty pistol into the head of the moose, resulting in the death of the animal."

Two thoughts:
1. Mounties need bigger guns.
2. Canadian border security intelligence officers need to be "familiar with livestock"? I know Americans are generally overweight, but come on...

Ugh. I came across a deer that had had both of its legs on one side broken by a car (I assumed.) The back leg was just hanging by a thread. It had managed to get some distance from the road, but it was lying in a ditch when my dog found it. When I saw how badly it was injured, I went back to my friend's house and called the fish and game people and asked them if they'd come put it out of its misery. They said No, call the police.

I didn't--the animal was way out in the woods, and I don't like cops. it has haunted me ever since then that I left it to die, didn't have a gun, and that fish and game wouldn't come and kill it.

Someone needs to retake high school biology. I would bet a good number of police firearm discharges in Canada are to dispatch a moose/deer/horse/cow that tangled with a vehicle. Well at least in Newfoundland, Northern Ontario/Quebec.

Icky. No. A girl told me about slitting the throat of an elk that she found injured by the side of the road, because she didn't have a gun. But that girl is a little different, shall we say?

Just to make it clear to people: There are two groups "protecting" Canada's borders.

There is the RCMP, who are highly trained police officers who deal with incidents involving guns/drugs/terrorists and things generally of a criminal nature. They have always had guns while on duty. They have always been guarding Canada's borders.

Then there is the CBSA. The CBSA are glorified tax-collectors. Their job is to make sure that any Canadians who purchase goods outside the country pay duty. These people don't have any law enforcement training, most are not law enforcement agents with the power of arrest. They are clerks.

When the CBSA would stumble upon something that needed a criminal investigation, or need to deal with someone dangerous, they would call the RCMP.

So the CBSA convinced the government to allow CBSA agents to carry guns... they did this by spreading the meme "Canadian Border Guards are unarmed!!!". This is totally untrue, the CBSA are not "border guards", they are tax collectors.

So, in terms you use in the U.S., this would be roughly the same as giving the people working behind the desk at your local DMV guns.

They would normally use their shotgun or other weapon. The 9mm used in their sidearm is designed to wound not kill, with only a head or heart shot being 100% lethal. using it on a moose with it's thick skull wouldn't do much good unless you shot it in exactly the right place.

\45 ACP should be standard issue.
\\If that's too much gun for an officer, time to become a meter maid.

Yeah, because 9/11 made those TERRISTS or soo, soo SCARY we need a bunch or "Fearless Fosdicks" at the borders.

I wish Canada would have the cojones to stand up to the US paranoia, but, there are too many boot-licking politicians and ass-kissing bureaucrats who just jump at the opportunity to build up their empires.

Unfortunately, the vast numbers of Toronto Sun readers swallowed this hook, line and sinker.

But the Americans give their border guards guns, don't they just do the same thing? RCMP is not always there, and may take some time to get there considering some locations are remote.

And the RCMP handle nationwide policing, supported by at sometimes provincial police, then municipal police. Somewhat akin to the FBI/State Police/Local PD relationship. So what you are saying is that you have FBI agents at all your checkpoints as well? Or the American border guards do their own investigations, etc?

I can't believe that the officers in question were so stupid as to not know where to actually shoot a moose in the head to kill it. (Base of brain below ear) This is pretty standard location for all warm blooded mammals.)

Then again they might have been aiming there, but so incompetent that they couldn't hit. I have read where more than 80% did not qualify with those sidearms on first try.

Doubtful. The CBSA sounds like a federal agency to me. DMVs are state run. Zero correlation. Sounds more like a cross between the IRS's special agents and the select few ICE agents that do financial investigations, but maybe without the agent training?

Rigger1955 2009-11-16 12:04:11 AM
If you clowns have ever seen a moose flailing around on the highway with it's sharp hooves whipping around you would understand that it is not easy to shoot it in the ear or anywhere on the head.
You can't get close enough to it' head with a pistol to put your shot exactly where you want it.
They will kick at you even when hurt badly.
Been there, done that, got the scar.

These guy were smart enough to ask for help when they realised they don't know WTF they were doing. A lot of cops would have emptied their mags.
