1. Cute video

2. You'd prefer to see the elk overpopulate the area, eat all the available food, and either wander into traffic or slowly starve to death? Controlling elk and deer populations is the humane thing to do.

But you go on and moan about how hunters just want to shoot Bambi, submitter.

Where's the video of the elk slowly starving to death due to lack of food?

Not really. Any state that gives out cow tags will let you shoot a calf with it.

Isn't it the whole point of those cameras to find the bucolic paradise that the animal loves to frolic in so you can come back later and shoot its face off?

This reminds me of an incident about ten years ago.
My sister-in-law was a PETArd and delighted in showing me a video of a twelve point buck drinking at a pond. In her glee to rub it in my face about the animal's safety, she forgot that I knew the area she lived in like the back of my hand.
Two days later I dropped off some venison sausage to my brother and thanked her for the deer.

Animals like this are creatures of habit. All this video does is give local hunters a better idea of where to stalk. So, in your haste to say "suck it hunters", all you have done is guarantee this animal's future as food and/or wall decoration

When choosing an Elk to shoot, how do I tell if it was gonna starve in the distant future? I'd sure hate to shoot one of the good ones.
/damn elk.. always in my food supply/best parking spots

TheHopeDiamond [TotalFark] 2009-11-15 01:28:13 PM
And here come the hunter he-men to jabber about how it helps animals to kill them.

Yes, some will starve. It's called Nature. The same Nature you claim to be fans of.

Now go drink your beer, Great White Hunters.

Dear Jerk 2009-11-15 01:37:27 PM
I buy into the population control idea. But it's a rationalization, not an impetus. Hunting is not really a civic minded thing, but as long as you eat what you kill, carry on.

John Buck 41 [TotalFark] 2009-11-15 01:40:42 PM
Here's a radical idea that should end this discussion.

Those who wish to hunt, may.

Those who don't wish to hunt? They don't have to; they aren't being forced. But they can STFU. That'd be great.

Aeonite [TotalFark] 2009-11-15 01:46:30 PM
This elk is not playing, it's confused and crazed with mad elk disease. It should be put down for the safety of others.

Palpable Butthurt 2009-11-15 01:57:54 PM
Suck it, hunters, subby says, as he finishes his McBaconBurger made from little pieces of three hundred corn fed cows shot up with antibiotics because they spend the last years of their lives in filthy cramped fattening pens. Hunting is the most humane way to get meat.

/not a vegetarian
//not a pretentious douchebag like subby either

BGates: Not really. Any state that gives out cow tags will let you shoot a calf with it.

But you can't just shoot the calf. That was the point I was trying to make. No evidence of where the mother was.

Juc 2009-11-15 02:07:44 PM
I don't really get the people who hate on hunters all the time.

So long as they eat what they kill it's all good by me.

The people who kill animals and leave the meat to rot do bug me, but I wouldn't call those people hunters. Killing anything isn't something you should do that lightly.

Dear Jerk: I buy into the population control idea. But it's a rationalization, not an impetus. Hunting is not really a civic minded thing, but as long as you eat what you kill, carry on.

Its currently become a necessity in Valley Forge park here in Pennsylvania; the deer population has shot from the low hundreds to around 1200+ because of the safe haven the park provides; the problem is that they've been starving for years, not to mention the car accidents driving through the park.

/not a hunter
//understand their purpose though

lamric 2009-11-15 02:26:39 PM
Yes you can just shoot the calf. In most states you get to shoot one animal per license. I have a Colorado cow tag for next month that allows me to take one animal, cow or calf during the month of December.

Highroller48 [TotalFark] 2009-11-15 02:33:26 PM
I carry 2 essential items in the bush....the rifle and the camera. If I'm not gonna eat it, I take a photo instead.

Just how is eating deer, moose, pheasant or duck any different than beef, chicken or lamb?

As a lifelong hunter, I can say hunting is not about helping the environment. Anyone who says that's WHY they do it is a liar. Any ecological benefit is purely incidental - although the benefit is real enough in many cases. People hunt because they enjoy it, and we hunters take comfort in the fact that it can be done in a sustainable and responsible manner.

Now, I don't hunt bear because I disagree with many hunters and agencies about the overall health of the population, and I don't trophy hunt, but anyone who eats meat yet broadly condemns hunting automatically loses the battle of moral equivalency just for being stupid.

A friend once said to me that rifle hunting was unsporting because we shoot from a distance. They claimed only bow hunting was truly fair, because you had to stalk so close. They told me this in a KFC, while eating chicken that was sportingly chased down from inside a 1 cubic foot cage.

So, in summary:

-If it's not endangered, if it's yummy, and if you intend to eat it, hunting is just fine.
-Trophy hunting is pure penis-extending.
-The anti-hunting crowd can go fornicate themselves with a Remington over-under.

I couldn't agree more. I've never hunted in my life. But I eat meat, and I don't have any delusions that it comes from some magical steak tree.

As has been said, hunting keeps down the population, so they don't all starve. And a few hundred pounds of meat can really help out a family in these tough times. Sure, you could argue that people expanding more and more into their territory is reducing their food supply, and reducing their natural predators. But aren't we one of their natural predators as well?

If you don't like it, don't eat it. Personally, I hate Broccoli, but I don't try to ban it. Perhaps I should start IPFEAB (Insane People For the Eradication of All Broccoli). I'm sure if I stand on a street corner naked in protest, people will be disgusted enough to notice.

I have no problem with hunting for food. It's the attitude of some hunters - kill a deer, get all excited, feel like you're superior to the animal, brag to friends. etc etc. Dude you have a gun! Any idiot can kill an animal with a gun. Technology killed the animal, not you. Kill it with your bare hands then maybe I'll be impressed. /end rant

Highroller48: ...anyone who eats meat yet broadly condemns hunting automatically loses the battle of moral equivalency just for being stupid.

This.

As a vegetarian who is such for various reasons (including moral reasons) I would much rather see those who did choose to eat meat acquire it by hunting it themselves instead of purchasing a factory-grown meat-product in a grocery store. I do not take issue with those who eat meat, their choice is a personal one, but I do take MAJOR issue with the meat industry in America the effects of which extend far beyond the individual consumer.

This primal instinct to kill could be circumvented if hunters got jobs at abbatoirs.

Imagine you're a deer. You're prancing along. You get thirsty. You spot a little brook. You put your little deer lips down to the cool, clear water - BAM. A farkin' bullet rips off part of your head. Your brains are lying on the ground in little bloody pieces. Now I ask ya, would you give a fark what kind of pants the son-of-a-biatch who shot you was wearing?

For every head of broccoli you don't eat, I'll eat three!

/ Vegetarian - doesn't understand the desire to hunt, but has no moral objection so long as hunters comply with the rules and eat what they kill.

I will say this as concisely as possible. I really don't care if you are a hunter or not. My problem is with the "if we don't kill them, they will overpopulate and die, and that's why we do it" argument. Yes, that will happen. That's called natural selection. The strongest, most able to find food will survive. No hunter shoots the weak or sick animal. What kind of trophy would that be to show off to his oh-so-butch friends? No, They shoot the most healthy, biggest, most beautiful animal they can find. This then effectively de-evolves the very species they claim to be "helping". Truth be told, you kill animals because you like to kill. No more, no less. Your argument is a lie and you know it.

Kyosuke [TotalFark] 2009-11-15 04:24:53 PM
plywoodjungle: What kind of trophy would that be to show off to his oh-so-butch friends?

You can't tell by the mounted head whether or not a animal was weak or sick.

They overpopulate because we've eliminated most of their other predators. I suppose you'd rather that they slowly starve to death. Is that more humane?

plywoodjungle 2009-11-15 04:42:06 PM
Kyosuke

Yes, it is more humane. All creatures are instilled with a natural desire for self preservation and would prefer the option of attempting to survive than a "humane" bullet to the head. Also, no death in the wild is wasted. The death of one species from any circumstance benefits another. Your belief that you are helping to maintain the balance of nature is laughably erroneous.
