How ironic that this alien-looking creature is so gentle and unthreatening to us (other than freak accidents), and yet a cute and adorable chimpanzee is much more likely to tear us a new asshole.

I'm sure if you tried to put a giant string ray in an enclosure and dress it up and feed it mcdonalds and xanax, it would fark you up pretty good.

Back in the 1950s, there was a story about a freighter that had a running battle with a real giant manta ray that lasted for about week with the freighter barely making it into port.

Funny how divers used to not be so afraid of stingrays until one killed the fark out of Steve Irwin with an improbable strike to the heart. Now they act like stingrays are dangerous as all hell.

Umm.. WTF were we talking about again?

Eye-bleach, hell, I need some brain-bleach now.

Closest thing I can think of:

img266.imageshack.us

Jessica Alba in a bikini. Proof there is a God and everything is alright with the world.

Back when God was planning all this crap out I think He already had the bikini in mind before matter accreted, molecules organized into life, and humans evolved. Now God's plan has finally been realized. Behold its glory. Amen, brother.

FTA "Manta rays are one of the most intelligent creatures in the ocean and, at up to seven metres long, one of the largest."

FTA "almost nothing is known about their lives."

Who decides that they are one of the most intelligent creatures in the ocean? It seems like every other creature in the ocean is one of the "most intelligent". I understand dolphins and octopus which have displayed high intelligence but for a creature that science knows little about; where does the saying come from here?

/Yea, I know its probably just words added on to make people want to save the oceans more and increase conservation efforts.

Rare? I'm no fisherman, and certainly not a world traveler, but I've seen at least a dozen +6 ft stingrays pulled out of the water in my lifetime.

The only reason we don't know a lot about them is - dainty little snowflake scientists are either too lazy, uninterested, or (more likely) scared shiatless of them plunging a poison arrow into their heart.

just for the record, 7 meters is a LOT longer than 6 feet...
