I just know there's a punch line here somewhere. Something about a dog. An old dog.

Fear of death. Next question, please.

mattharvest [TotalFark] 2009-11-14 01:28:09 PM
Yeah, basically the article is about how if you're bored, afraid of dying, and watching your friends and family leave you, then you'll start looking for something to make your life seem like it still has meaning.

What a shock.

Thus proving that the Bible is the inerrant word of God and you should vote Republican.

Surprising as it may seem, my life already has meaning. Thanks for the offer though.

Funny, I started out looking for God, only to finally realize He doesn't exist.

You have to believe Him into existence, Marcus Aurelius.

As my dad has gotten older, he's become more vocal about his lack of faith. In fact, I don't remember hearing anything about it until he was in his 50s. He will be 60 in February. He has a good friend from Lenoir, NC, and she calls him "the heathen" and he calls her "the dumb hillbilly." It works out really well.

Hau Ruck [TotalFark] 2009-11-14 02:16:06 PM
Being put into prison has this effect too.

Subby, you missed the point of that article entirely. The point isn't that atheists find religion later in life, it's that old people need more hobbies. There is one anecdote about an atheist finding religion after 50, but that is the only one involving an atheist, and on top of that that article is not trying to make that point at all. There isn't any data. It doesn't say atheists try to find god later in life. It just says "hey white heads, I know your generations raised people who are boring and sold out their values en masse, but you can believe in fairy tales now to pass the time." That was the point of TFA. Their first story seems to have been someone who wasn't religious finding religion later in life, but all of the other stories are downhill from there (in terms of making your point). Look at their second story:

After 25 years in corporate finance, Jim Van Schaick walked into a United Methodist Church in Manhattan and decided he was home. Raised in the church, he had married a Roman Catholic woman and attended Catholic mass all through his marriage. After his divorce and a move from Ridgefield, Conn., to Manhattan, he began passing a local Methodist church on his way to work each day. "I had walked by the church for three years, and I always said, 'One day I'm going to go to that church.' I woke up one morning, and I knew that was the day I was going back."

So he was religious, then moved and eventually found another church? How is that someone finding religion? All the stories seem to be about people after 50 needing a new hobby:

"One reason is simply about time, available time. People who are into their 50s, generally the kids are gone, they have more time, they have more freedom," said Rabbi Meir Feldman of Temple Beth-El in Great Neck."

So no data, only one semi-convincing story out of 3 and some psychologist and a rabbi, etc. This is just a fluff piece.

oh, so, old scared and lonely people want friends, and some of them find solace in the benevolent, invisible, made up sort?

and this is news?

when i get old, i'm taking up knitting. or pyrotechnics. no god for me, thanks.

TFA: "One reason is simply about time, available time. People who are into their 50s, generally the kids are gone, they have more time, they have more freedom," said Rabbi Meir Feldman of Temple Beth-El in Great Neck.

I hope I have better things to do with my time when I'm in my 50s than sitting in a church.

Like fly fishing, restoring an old car, or pounding sand.

The Icelander [TotalFark] 2009-11-14 05:27:53 PM
Also, these stories support my hypothesis that religious faith is just an assumption you really, really, really want to be true. Mostly because you're scared of what would happen if it weren't true.

I remember the last words of a guy, an ex-marine who had been to Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Guam. They were "I've been waiting so long for the Lord, but there's nothing"

Pretty much sums it up.

My friend's dad died a year or so back and he was an atheist and never found religion. He told his family he wanted no Christian funeral, and he wanted his ashes someday sent to space. His wife thought that right before he died he found God, even though there is no way to tell because he was in a coma. She thought he would have, so she and his parents had his funeral done at a church. My friend was so pissed. His dad really hated religion with a passion especially Christianity I guess. My friend said that he be soo pissed if he could know and at least he can't cause he is dead.

Yeah I know sort of random.

Yes, but why?
If you believe in the basic doctrines of any one of those it makes sense to work with your fellow believers.
