As an air analyst - kick, replies. It's called dry labbing and this guy is an idiot for thinking he could get away with it.

Given the lack of tangibility regarding farts (unlike, say, poop), I'm wondering if gorgor will be able to make a viable contribution here.

When landfills reach capacity and are closed, methane gas vents are required to be installed to release gasses and prevent underground fires. The gas emissions are regulated by the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District.

Hmmm. I would be piping it to gas turbines to generate electricity. But hey, that's just me.

Needs venting.

Why the heck are they venting it? Most municipalities capture it and run it through generators.

And dry labbing only works IN THE LAB. Those were fun chem classes. Sleep past lab. Do the numbers 'perfect'. Throw in a random number % offset. Write those in the lab book. Do the report. Tada.

Hm, I'll just copy in my last year's notes...same old landfill, same stinky garbage. So it's 30 feet deeper, the numbers will be the same. What's the worst that could happen? Not like methane gas can catch fire, right? Time to hit the beach!

Funny, we call it a "Window Check", as in he just drove to the site and didn't bother to get out and do his inspection. He just checked thru the window.

Also,

There first needs to be a high enough conentration of methane and it needs to be coming out of the ground at a high enough pressure to make it econommicaly feasible. Also landfills only produce methane for a few decades and then taper off making it even less worthwhile. That said, it is done from time to time.

/Has worked as a drafter, inspector and engineer doing Methane gas mitigation in the LA area for over ten years now.

i really don't understand this. you have this great job where you drive around all day, not being bothered by supervisors, annoying cube mates, whatever and you are too lazy to walk your ass over to a vent and take a sample? for christ's sake it's southern california, no snow, no real heat to speak of, no rain ...... some folks are just dumb.

I wonder if they could put up portable-ish generators that can be moved once the methane runs out at a landfill. They'd be able to make back their investment more quickly, no?
