Why is a no-hitter so much more exciting to people who then scuff at the notion that Soccer can't be exciting cause there's not much scoring.

If I wanted to see a bunch of guys missing the ball over and over again I would watch....errr....baseball I guess?

I am beside myself. I did not read the article below the video until it ended. I was telling myself, "Shait, that's Dock! That's the Gunner!

When I was living in the 'Burgh, I used to listen to all the Pirate broadcasts on KDKA; including the pre-game and post-game shows, so I immediately recognized the voices.

I truly miss Bob Prince.

That is the greatest. Seriously, thank you for posting this.

Peter.

Awesome to think that my grandpa probably watched this game/listened to it on the radio. He'd probably remember it today too.

Course I wouldn't ever tell him Dock was on acid.

This grandpa knows. Yours wouldn't have been shocked or disappointed.

I heard the game, as I listened to almost all of them.

Dock was cool, for sure.

I have to comment again because of what I noticed during my second pass through the video: the "green weenie" on Prince's desk.

This was a promotion of the Heinz Co., and fans were urged by the Gunner and the "Possum," Jim Woods, to shake them at the visiting team to put the hex on their rallies. This promotion actually started at Forbes Field. (Pirates didn't move into Three Rivers Stadium until July, I think.)

Great attention to detail that only a Pittsburgher would know.

Thanks again, poster.

/can remember 33,000 fans shaking those things
//what a trip

Bunnyhat: Why is a no-hitter so much more exciting to people who then scuff at the notion that Soccer can't be exciting cause there's not much scoring.

Because it's so rare. Over 5000 baseball games are played every year, and with 100+ years of history, that's easily in the neighbourhood of 500,000 games recorded. Of those 500k, 263 are no-hitters, or 0.05% of all baseball games. One half of one tenth of one percent. And perfect games (27 straight outs, no errors or BBs) are even more rare: I think there's only been about a dozen or so.

But soccer shutouts happen all the time. An exciting soccer game would be like a 10-8 score, because a score like that doesn't happen often (or at all? I have yet to see one).

Here's a link to the game. (new window) 8 walks, 1 HPB, and 3 SB's and no runs or hits! Game score of 85! WHILST TRIPPING BALLS! Nice work, Dock. Also, the bases were never loaded, but he did have a putout, and he did get that touchdown.

You can't come up with a more ridiculous sports story. I've done LSD and all I did was laugh and act weird. No way I could pitch or hit or do anything. Dock did what no one can do.

TomD9938 [TotalFark] 2009-11-14 01:31:04 PM
From Wiki

Because the no-hitter was the first game of a double header, Ellis was forced to keep track of the pitch count for the night game.

That sounds every bit as daunting as throwing the no-hitter.

Now That's What I Call a Taco! 2009-11-14 02:25:16 PM
Man, he had to bat, too. And it looks like at least one of his at-bats didn't end up in a strikeout. That's pretty damned amazing.

I think Dock Ellis mostly made-up this story, a good decade-plus after it happened. In fact, it was long after his retirement that he first spoke of it.

Of course, this is a "Fark Drug Thread", so ignore me and go on believing that acid makes you accomplish wonderful athletic achievements.

A no hitter means no hits as in the statistic, not the lack of the bat making contact with the ball.

So youre telling me that a no hitter has several hits? I was very confused in the video when balls were being hit during a no hitter. Baseball doesnt make any farking sense.

It makes perfect sense, you just don't understand it. Big difference.

A bat making contact with a ball that goes foul or gets caught doesn't count as a hit, neither does someone getting walked to base. Not confusing.

I understand your confusion.
Baseball statistics/scoring use a specific definition for hit, which means the batter also makes it to First Base without being put out.
You can hit the ball without it being classified on the scorecard as a hit.

For example:
1) you could hit a pop-up which is then caught for a Flyball out.
2) you could hit a line-drive which is then caught for a Lineout.
3) you you could hit a ground ball which is thrown to First Base before the Batter/Runner reaches it, for a Groundout.
4) you could hit a ball to a fielder and have it bounce out of his glove and the Batter/Runner reaches First Base on an Error.
5) with two strikes, you could Bunt foul - making contact with the ball but classified a Strike Out.

There are other ways for a Batter to reach First Base - Walk, or Hit By Pitch.
A Pitcher could hit every Batter by pitches and still have it be a no-hitter.
It is also possible to lose a no-hitter.

A no-hitter where no Batters ever reach First Base is a Perfect Game.

But one lack of attention to detail that a non-Padre fan wouldn't know - the sketch of Jack Murphy Stadium at the beginning of the video is post-1997 reconfiguration Jack Murphy-cum-Qualcomm Stadium, when the seats around the scoreboard were filled in. 1970's Murph was open at that end. Other than that that was a cool-ass video

A no hitter means no one hits to base. It doesn't mean that the bat never makes contact with the ball. If you hit the ball but don't make it safely to first (or possibly second), it doesn't get recorded statistically as a hit (fly or ground out in most cases).

Attended a Padres/Pirates in that stadium in 1969, when I was stationed on Coronado Island. The ferry was very cool; the bridge was not quite completed. San Diego was nice then. Now? meh.
