Competitors can't drink while bowling? So that's the key to bowling a good game.

Children, today's local hero is Homer Simpson. Mr. Simpson bowled a perfect game without the aid of steroids, crack, angel dust, or the other narcotics that are synonymous with pro bowling.

There probably wouldn't be an X-Games otherwise.

I can't wait until Cali or the Massholes legalizes cannabis. There are 3 NFL teams in CA and one in MA. The NFL will have to change its draconian marijuana suspension policy if that happens. Hell, 13 states currently allow for medical marijuana, with more than a dozen more making moves in the legislature or by ballot initiative to join them. You don't think NFL players have chronic pain? You get a 4 game suspension if you shoot heroin or drag your woman down the stairs by the hair Lawrence Phillips style or if you use cannabis. One of these does not belong!

It actually takes tremendous skill to compete at the PBA level. I know most people think of bowling and they have this idea of drunk guys smoking and hanging out on league night.

This is not how pro bowling works. Watch the telecast on Sundays, ESPN and see for yourself.

Any activity that allows you to enjoy a cigarette during the height of the action is a game, not a sport.

/of course, now you have to go outside in most places.

Strangely, does not test for alcohol

I'm pretty sure that any sport where you can get punched in the face doesn't really need to test for alcohol.

Ok, but this would NEVER be allowed during a competition of the Professional Bowler's Association. PBA. Nor would drinking a beer or any of that.

If a pro bowler wants to have a beer in the evening after the first qualifying squad is done, they can't even be wearing their jersey, and they have to stay in the bar at all times.

Unfortunately, many people confuse "recreational bowling," where people have a beer and it's just a fun thing with friends, with "professional/competitive bowling," where as much as $100,000 or more is on the line and the oil is placed on the lanes such that any mistakes made by the bowler are amplified. I.e, if you miss your target, the ball will never hook back into the pins.

I'm not knocking bowling. It's an excellent game of skill. And I think drinking would have an adverse effect on performance at the highest levels.

I'm just saying--flash back 30 years to more liberal indoor smoking laws--the world's best bowlers, pool players, dart players and poker players could have a cigarette burning next to them in an ashtray while they played, if they were allowed and so inclined, without having it affect their performance.

This as opposed to smoking on the field of a football or basketball game, or a track and field meet, where the physical exertion level is part of what makes these activities a sport.

Golf, I think, would be a tossup.

Legalizing it will not automatically change the rules in the NFL, or any other sport for that matter. Most professional sports already have a banned substance list full of legal supplements that can be bought at any GNC or health food store.

It's much more of a sport than poker is.

OTOH, apparently your state can just say that drug testing for X isn't legal and then you're free to play the whole season while the NFL fights it in court, helping your team get the best record in their division.

/both the Vikings and Saints (by proxy) had this happen this season. The Williams boys fought a case and they're all good, so the NFL is letting the Saints guys who got popped for the same thing off because it would be even more lame to bust everyone except the Vikings players

This list is farkign ridiculous. TdF is only marginally better than NFL, and the IOC is the gold standard!?

Marion Jones only got busted because she admitted doping to the FBI; meanwhile, TdF riders are tested in comp and out, with mandatory tests for all stage winners and many others every day; while NFL players are sucking back steroids so ferociously they are gargling with their testicles, with complete impunity.

What a steaming load.
