(Cleveland) Obvious Browns RB Jamal Lewis says Coach Mangini's strict practice regimen gives the team discipline and mental fortitude. Just kidding. He said the 3 hour practices drain the team's energy and caused the team's 1-7 record   (cleveland.com) divider line 90

3 hours? Boo-farking-hoo.

He said the team works every day for 2 1/2 to three hours and has practiced in pads through a half-season more than he did with the Baltimore Ravens in three seasons.

Most good teams don't practice in pads as the season wears on, because it seems to give veterans a rest. It seemed to work a lot more for the Ravens. I wonder how the Patriots did things, since Mangini seems to suddenly want to do everything like Field Marshal von Belichick.

This is the chicken/egg thing. Do you guys suck because of 3 hour practices, or do you need 3 hour practices because you guys suck?

/I'm pretty sure high school football teams had 2-3 hour practices, and that was after a full day of school. Suck it up, Jamal.

Has there been a worse Browns team in franchise history? Some of those early 70's teams were pretty bad, but I think this season is a new low water mark.

I think a Browns fan should bribe one of LeBron's friends to claim that Mangini assaulted him. This might force the front office to get rid of Mangini as well.

On the Side 2009-11-12 01:28:39 PM
We're talking about practice right? Practice? Wait, how much does he get paid to practice playing a game for a few hours a day? Does it interfere with his day job? Wait what do you mean that is his day job?

Jamal should just be thankful that Mangini didn't want practices to go on until 100 passes were completed..

Came in here to say this. My high school usually had 2 to 2 1/2 hour practices, every school day except Friday. Granted, not everyone was constantly doing something, but its not like we were all slouching around, either. And this was in central Texas in the summer/fall, not in a climate controller practice facility like most NFL teams have.

I really, really don't think one's high school experiences relate, in any way whatsoever, to what it is like to play in the NFL.

Incidentally, these guys don't work out for 3 hours and then go home...

I'm not convinced that your high school experiences in Bumfark, Texas can be an appropriate comparison to any professional football league, let alone the NFL.

People do need to remember that's three hour practices in pads, plus the weight room z couple times, plus game film. That actually ends up being a very long day.

No, no, no. His day job is brokering cocaine deals, and these long practices are really taking a toll on this.

Boo-farking-hoo. Lewis makes $3.5 million base this year ($5 million with incentives).

NFL minimum salary is a little over $300k.

For that kind of jack, Lewis shouldn't be complaining.

OK we've tried Romeo "i'm your buddy, youre my buddy" Crennel

and now

Eric "I'm not yo' momma" Mangini

In both cases the Browns sucked - if all it took was either being the players' friend or their worst enemy to make a great (at this point I'd take average) football team then we should have had it. The inescapeable conclusion is that you actually need someone who knows what the fark they are doing as a coach and a GM. Quite frankly I'm beginning to suspect that those talents are rarer than a starting QB or a shutdown corner. Really we should be drafting GM's/Coaches as well as players.

Commish "With the 3rd pick in the first round Cleveland takes Mack Brown, University of Texas..."

Announcer I had the Browns taking a QB in this spot but theyve opted to try and improve their coaching situation, we'll have to see how this affects the Chefs who have the fourth pick and we're expected to take Brown if he was available....

Tom_Thump 2009-11-12 01:51:41 PM
Mangini should go to him and say:
I hear you think 3 hour practices in pads isn't working out for the team. I agree... Tomorrow we start 4 hour practices and you'll do it with this midget on your back.
Then I would laugh as I turned to walk out with the midget saying: Come on little guy let's go to lunch.

The team right after the franchise came back, with Tim Couch as the QB. That team went 2-14 -- but it really had no POTENTIAL. At least with this Browns team you can see that there are some sparks of ... I dunno, something.

Ok, a 4A school in Austin isn't exactly bumfark, but whatever. I'm not saying that any high school has the same level of intensity in workouts as an NFL team. I doubt any college does as well. Doing full practices halfway into an NFL season may be a stupid idea. I don't doubt it, in fact. Players in their late 20s and 30s don't recover as quickly as a younger guy can. Still, at this point in his life, players should be used to multi-hour, full speed, in pad practices. If high school players and college players will willingly put 20-30 hours a week into working out for nothing, a players making a 6, 7, or 8 digit salary can put in a little more work.

Lewis is correct, that is insane, since you actually have to rest during the week when you play real men. You can get away with it when you are playing against Texas high-school pansies, but not when you play against the murderous freight trains in the NFL. In the NFL all the players are ten times as talented as the best single player you might have faced at your little high schools.

im pretty sure the intensity of high school football practice is comparable. as is the energy expended during a game that inevitably requires recovery.

But yes...I'm sure the reasons the Browns suck this year is because they simply work too hard...

The '99 Browns would wipe the floor with this team. We lost by 20+ to the Bears, who lost 20 points to the Cardinals, who aren't exactly the Saints.

Tell me how playing a 3 hour football game requires a full week of rest when a regular person, who isn't the strongest or fastest 1% of the population, can work a physical job like construction and landscaping for 8 hours a day for 5 days a week. You're not getting mauled by 350 pound lineman in construction jobs, but come on, unless you're Brett Favre or Morten Anderson, you probably need 2 days to recover, 3 tops.

He has a point. If they just played XBox and watched movies all day, their record wouldn't be any worse (I'm sorry, that win against the Bills just doesn't count as a "W" in my book... it was really a "L" where you somehow scored more points than the other team).

Who said anything about needing a full week of rest? I think you have it backwards. It's not that they can't handle the 3 hour practices (like the construction worker in your example), it's that they have nothing left in the tank to actually compete on Sunday.

Yeah, I did get that backwards, I misread the guy I quoted. Browsing fark while trying to pay attention in class is usually a bad plan. Still, I don't have much pity for a guy who makes more money in a year than most people make in their lives playing a game. Mangini probably is making a bad decision in working his players throughout the week, especially as the season goes on. But if you get paid like Lewis does, stfu and do what the coach says, its him who gets blamed for the total failure of the team, not Lewis.

Bill Simmons had a guy write into him discussing this very idea. The guy came up with the winner of shiat games like that getting a "moral defeat". The exact opposite of a "moral victory".
