"Chesapeake Ray"? No, No, No!

If you want to market a fish into oblivion, you need to give it a catchy name. Remember how popular patagonian toothfish used to be? Of course not. That's because you never tried it until it was Chilean Sea Bass. Now it's a threatened species.

Hell, the Brits now apparently love their col-an and chips, when they used to hate the stuff when it was pollack.

But you're going to have to do better than 'Chesapeake Ray'. Sure, it's a step up from 'Cownose Stingray', but it's still got a long ways to go. How about these?

Chesapeake yummifish
Atlantic butterswimmer
Boneless white flatfish
North Atlantic white flatbass
American thunderfish

C'mon. Usually, nobody can hype completely useless shiat like Americans can. I'm disappointed in this effort so far.

Who the hell eats sharks out of the Chesapeake Bay?? I've lived near and fished in the bay since I was a kid, and I've never heard of anybody purposefully fishing for sharks in it, let alone eating them. This isn't Japan for Christ's sake.

I smell BS.

I've had skate, but I don't think it's quite the same. I really enjoy skate, it has an interesting texture and a mild taste.

There is an awesome fish and chips place in Old Town Alexandria that serves ray. I may try it next time I go. Apparently, it is not entirely de-boned, and the bones are edible.

Was going to suggest they call the stuff "bacon of the sea." But a quick Google search finds that the name is already taken.

I don't know what kinds of shark you have up there, but the sharks I catch in the Gulf of Mexico are delicious.

Two_Noodles 2009-11-11 11:36:34 PM
Hmm, I catch southern stingrays all the time. I've actually seen stingray wings for sale in Whole Foods too (who farking buys that?). Maybe its time to try the by-catch. Mullet is not bad fried and many consider it a "bait" species.

GoSurfing 2009-11-11 11:37:06 PM

You aren't selling any calling them Patagonian Toothfish? Just call em "Chilean Sea Bass" and get some hot NY chefs to whip up recipes with them!

Well, we've all been eating rays or skates marketed as scallops for sometime. A circle punch is used on the rays wings to make nice little scallop shaped meat. It does taste very similar. This is especially true in Chinese restaurants.

/or so I've heard

bmfderek: I don't know what kinds of shark you have up there, but the sharks I catch in the Gulf of Mexico are delicious.

The only sharks I've ever caught in it are sand sharks less than three feet long. The most common thought I've had when I've boated one is "Crap, I was hoping that was a flounder," followed by "I wonder if I can get my rig back without losing a finger." Never once has the thought "I'll bet that would be delicious" occurred to me.

Dolphin is sold (and is popular) through most of the U.S. as "Mahi Mahi", because people don't want to eat Flipper... even though it's not -that- kind of dolphin and all.

Always thought that was kind of funny.

AKA Dorado.

There's nothing like catching one, and then filleting it on the boat and grilling it 5 minutes later.

Fresh as fresh gets.

I haven't had sting ray, but I've had skate, which is supposedly very similar. It is a nice meaty white-fleshed fish, sort of scallopy, sort of sharky -- and shark can be good, too, unless you get the gristly part.

Mahi Mahi isn't -any- kind of dolphin at all. Nope. Just a fish. It has gills and all.
