I would like to personally extend my humble abode to all of the woman's football, volleyball and swim teams in this hour of need.

I wonder how many people are without power there.

In this country, first you get the money, then you get the women, THEN you get the power. Maybe.

Rio and Sao Paulo? Oh, if there was ever a time for the 'baby boom in nine months' rumor to start flying, this would be it.

About half, per TFA.

Funny how they got the power back on hours before this hit the main page. So lots of people in Brazil might very well be reading this.

to be fair, it is hard to associate power with brazilians

only thing i could think of:

Half of Brazilians lose power, AKA men.

but i like the number joke:

Brazilians loose power. check that. Brazilian Gagilion loose power.

Oh, those poor Brazilian women! No air conditioning. It must be hot. Like sweltering heat. They'll be removing their clothes just to be comfortable. Oh, those poor Brazilian women.

I was really getting a kick out of this link because I was sitting in my house with my satellite uplink and my generator running as I read it.

My neighborhood lost power for a few hours last week. Turns out a squirrel blew itself up in a substation. It was a good excuse to pull out my emergency supplies like the crank powered lantern and radio.

/thought about getting the shotgun out too
//for zombies

How does half of Brazil have power? It's mostly jungle and dirt.

The Icelander: Congrats on not going for the obvious "brazilian" joke, subby.

I went with "One of the flayrods went skew at Itaipu, and Brazilians end up without power" trying for a sophisticated Python/Brazilian mash-up.

My conjecture is that I was too obscure and dry for the modmins who went with the rather more obvious Benny Hillish Yakety Sax slapstick headline we have above us.

That would be correct, Bob. Our power (in Sao Paulo) went out last night about 10:30 as I was cleaning up the pizza we had for dinner. We just went to bed. The lights came back on about 0400.

/bah, this happens so much that I use my cell phone as an alarm clock

Hey in parts of Brazil you can rent a pistol by the day or hour. No records kept. Do the crime the returnit for you deposit minus wear, tear and bullets.

One can enhance their CV during a power outage.

Interesting. 60 Minutes had a piece on cyber-terrorism last night stating that the power grid in Brazil had previously been the subject of malicious attacks for ransom. I wonder if that's what happened here again.

FTFA: Dam failure triggers huge blackout in Brazil

Well that's a pretty big dam problem, isn't it? I haven't heard a dam story like this in a long time. Hopefully they can fix the dam problems so people can get their dam power back.

/ How was that?

FTA : " "Everything's fine," the official said, adding that as Itaipu rebooted, it would repower the affected regions."

What I thought of after reading that:

SanDamiano 2009-11-11 07:31:28 AM
Once the power is restored, more Brazilians might be able to read the headline if it were in Portuguese.

Or, perhaps, they're remote enough that they have their own power source and satellite phone?

the grid = vulnerability
