Yup. Do it Murdoch, you craven whore. Put it all behind a pay-to-play firewall.

Do it.

I buy a Sunday news paper about one every two months. The criteria I use to choose which paper I buy is - which one is the thickest? I like to bbq and newspaper works perfectly in chimney starters.

Oh, do it, Google, call the bluff. Do it.

Drew, would you like to call the bluff too?

I'm waiting for when the AP starts charging NewsCorp for using it's content as their own, and then no one starts paying NewsCorp to view their sites.

ahhh

I still have no idea why he is being so vocal about this. If you don't like it, modify robots.txt. There is no need to do so publicly. What is his problem? Is everyone that understands the basics of the internet afraid to tell him this or something?

Wait, you mean Google is going to auto-filter out shiatty news services?

Sounds good to me!

Ah yes, an old man who most likely even forces his secretary to use a typewriter because he doesn't trust computers or "thingamajigs like that."

Don't worry, Rupert, soon enough those mean internets, interblogs, spacebooks and lib bloggers wont be able to say mean things about you or steal your news.

God help us if he ever visits fark..

News Corp owns an enormous number of newspapers around the world including The Australian, the New York Post and The Times of London, and is planning to soon charge all its online readers.

I bet his fan base decries this as a liberal plot to stymie dissemination of conservative talking points.

Rockdrummer 2009-11-10 06:27:52 PM

Flying Lasagna Monster: The word you are looking for, Subby, is is, not it.

It bothered me to, but if you read TFA they actually make the typo there too, so I'm assuming subby just c/p'd.

one of Ripley's Bad Guys 2009-11-10 06:28:10 PM
Sorry Rupert, the internet, while having a sizable percentage of imbeciles, nowhere near approaches that percentage among Fox "News" visitors...

jaerik 2009-11-10 06:29:23 PM
It's fine. Just like the begging-the-question argument that the mainstream media is liberally biased because Fox is the only one that isn't, they will show that Google's "refusal" to publish Murdoch news sources is proof that the internet is also biased. Thus driving folks like Fox News watchers to even further marginalization as they retreat to their private, pay-for-play echo chamber.

southern78 2009-11-10 06:29:28 PM
Think what they want is to re-bottle the genie..I agree the internet has diluted the profitability of the standard news model but I doubt whining about it and threatening the public with potential firewall the access will convince the masses. They will just go else where. Good luck with that. Be care Murdoch you can get dehydrated from crying so much.

Zeno-25 2009-11-10 06:29:42 PM
Wow, this douchebag really thinks he's bigger than Google.

Please Google, pull the plug and show this guy what happens when you screw with the internet.

nadsozinc 2009-11-10 06:30:31 PM
Good. Content from Fox shouldn't show up in Google News anyway.

Shadyman 2009-11-10 06:30:39 PM
From TFA: Google said it was up to individual news organisations to decide whether they wanted their stories listed on Google News, and there were "simple technical standards" that would remove them if they wished.

robots.txt, anyone?

runningscared 2009-11-10 06:34:48 PM
As a person who is willing to use other search engines other than Google, I'm getting a kick out of these replies...for now.

I read on another site that there is a more sinister reasoning behind this. I don't want to plagiarize someone else's idea (plus I can't find it right now), but it was something to do with copyright law on the internet, and how this small thing could turn into something that benefits Murdoch in other ways.

What Rain-Monkey said.

Want to be a fly on his desk when he gets the report of the first downfall in numbers. And again six months later when they haven't improved. And six months after that when it starts to dawn on him that the world can live without him.

It wouldn't surprise me if that was his "grand plan". Post the link sounds like a good read.

Murdocks biggest problem is that he doesn't own Google yet.

belgianguy 2009-11-10 06:39:21 PM
Wow, this Murdoch guy isn't just shooting himself in the foot, he's nuking his foot from orbit.

A lot of regular interweb visitors still use a search engine to locate the newsitems they are looking for, and if you start charging for content on top of that...

So if you have the luck to even find a link that still leads to a page owned by Murdoch, you'll be gone in a second since you aren't paying for something you can get for free in 2 clicks.

Ironically, one of those 2 clicks probably is Google.

Come on, nobody is going to pay for news these days. I mean, why should they since news is now reported, gathered and disseminated for free using magic fairies and unicorn farts. Oh wait, reporters, writers, journalists and producers still need to be paid and it costs a shiateton of cash to publish and distribute information! I forgot we are here in the real world, not in some altered reality where Mountain Dew and points on World Of Warcraft are legal tender.

To all of you greedy little farks that expect and demand all information be totally free and instantaneous, take comfort in the fact that you are the reason we have "news" that is made up of lies and speculation instead of solid reporting and facts. The less folks want to pay for it, the worse journalism is going to get. Be sure just keep on complaining until rubbish like CNN and Fox "news" is all you have left.

When you sit around taking in information that is gathered on the sweat of other people's brow, repurpose and repost photos you did not take, and quote/paraphrase/plagiarize content that you did not create, it is farking stealing. It is stealing out of my pocket and the pockets of many, many others that care less and less every day to work for a public that could give a fark less about the value of journalism to society. Enjoy the moment the last investigative piece spouts off its final breath and you find yourself retarded and uninformed and the last of us are in marketing.

Um, has he given this cunning plan a lot of thought? I rarely reference any Murdoch-owned pubs (except for the WSJ, which already charges for site access), so what exactly is this move supposed to be addressing?

I'd post the butthurt report form, but you'd probably accuse me of stealing.

I really, really, really, really wish Google would just say "Oh! Our bad!" and snatch everything even remotely relating to Fox out of their spider database. I know most of the people that visit there probably have foxnews.com as their home page, but jesus, the wandering clicks alone would be in the many millions. Plus, it'd take a hell of a load off Google's servers.

Lots of reasons. The pledge to do no evil, no problem with gays, no interest in religion, being kind of foreigny, supporting alternative energy. Take your pick.
