Might as well have called them the enver Brncs during the 4th quarter last night. That was beautiful.

Armstrong: Broncos' offense stuck in neutral

Steelers fans wave their Terrible Towels before kickoff of the game Monday night between Pittsburgh and Denver at Invesco Field at Mile High. (Steve Nehf, The Denver Post)

Will the real Broncos please stand up?

Mike Shanahan was fired after last season because the Broncos' defense couldn't stop anybody. Now, the Broncos are mired in their first losing streak under Shanahan's successor because their offense can't get started.

The Broncos' defense played well enough to win Monday night against the Steelers. So what else was new? The Denver defense has played well enough to win every week. But the Broncos' defensive players couldn't get by without a little help from their friends on the other side of the ball.

Your final score from Invesco Field: Steelers 28, Broncos 10.

Once again, Denver didn't score a touchdown in the first half and scored no offensive touchdowns for the game. If you've misplaced your scorecard, the Broncos have scored four first-half offensive touchdowns in eight games. Is it any wonder they're suddenly riding a two-game losing streak that has dropped their record to 6-2?

The key stat of the game, beside the one on the scoreboard: The Broncos, through three quarters, were 0-for-11 on third down. And in case you're wondering, the answer is yes, the boobirds noticed.

With the loss, the Broncos' lead in the AFC West dropped to one game over the resurgent San Diego Chargers. No really, we're not making this up. Three weeks ago, it appeared as though Denver was going to run away with the division.

Instead, the Broncos' offensive players had better sprint back to the blackboard. With the offense spinning its wheels, the Denver defense tired in the second half, as was the case in the team's first loss of the season at Baltimore. The Steelers, after gaining 54 first-half yards, stormed their way downfield for 199 yards in the third quarter alone.

But then, just when it looked like the Steelers were going to take a 21-10 third-quarter lead, Andre Goodman intercepted Ben Roethlisberger's pass to put the Broncos back in business. But they failed to take advantage and Pittsburgh took over to put the game away.

Did we hear chants of, "We want Simms!" from the peanut gallery? Things may not be that ugly for Kyle Orton. Then again, if Josh McDaniels is looking for a spark for his moribund offense, what better place to start than at quarterback?

seriously, Kyle Orton was at a 95 QB rating or something. be realistic: it's not like he turned into Johnny U all of a sudden this year.

vinnydoz007 2009-11-10 03:56:07 PM
First of all, I will never bash Kyle Orton, I think he may be the best game managing QB in the league. I do find it funny that McDaniels, supposed offensive wiz comes in, and the O is mediocre, and the D is doing great. Something tells me this Broncos success is less a product of Josh McDaniels and more a product of good free agent pick ups and a good D coordinator. Now can we blame McDaniels? Well he did come into year expecting to have a gunslinging high powered offense and that sort of fell apart. And to his credit, Orton is over achieving in his system. But I think its the D that defines them this year.

markyp09 2009-11-10 04:01:30 PM
Reminds me of Orton in Chicago. He needs the other two phases of the team to be above average to be successful because he's not going to do it himself. He has a better system (and talent around him) to work in now than under Ron Turner but he's not a terribly gifted QB. If the Denver D can play at the level it was playing at earlier this season, they can be a pretty good team.

I'm starting to think this is a trend. Though, likely it's just confirmation bias. When Lewis was hired in Cincy as a defensive mastermind, the offense became a juggernaut (for a season or two). When Billick was hired as an offensive genius in Baltimore, you saw the greatest D of the new millenium.

I don't hate the Neckbeard, but us Bears fans knew he couldn't be counted on to score points at will. So now they're surprised that the offense is sputtering in Denver? I can't wait for the Cutler hate to come down from the mountains and blow more hot air than a chinook wind.

They do that. And they only die off when the Broncos have shot themselves in the foot.

They're a good team this year. But just about any opponent that gets two scores above them this season is going to have the W.

chechcal: Chargers in rear-view mirror are closer than they appear.

Yea don't remind me. Assuming the Chargers actually make the playoffs this year, their road to a championship goes through teams like Pittsburgh, Cinncy, NE, Colts etc. They'll choke it away yet again, that is IF they make it.

I think Kyle Orton is a pretty good QB. He just had a bad game. Everyone has bad games, its nothing to worry about until they start becoming consecutive. They are still a good team.

And I don't think they faced a defense as good as the Steelers/Ravens earlier this year. The stats may say other teams are better than these two team are, but statistics can mean whatever you want.

/my 2 cents

It's only 8 games into his first season, and their offense on paper looks far from "high-powered".

Scoring only 3 offensive points at home, no matter how good the defense is you're up against, is unacceptable, but not even McDaniels himself thought this team would hang 30+ points every week.

You can't have Orton throw 40 times and expect to win. Yeah 3 interceptions is a lot, but he shouldn't have been throwing that much in the first place. If you're going to win with your Neckbeard offense, you have to have a strong running game.

Orton is a null quantity. The Steelers shut down the Bronco run game and broke the Broncos D in the second half. That right there is enough to tell you who won.

Neckbeard will dink and dunk 6 yard passes 20 or 25 times a game and take care of things. Asking him to produce 90% of the offense is just not what he does.

Ravens D isn't that good this year. Not against the pass anyway. So that seems to be the theme:

How many times did Cowher's Steelers "choke" in the playoffs before finally winning one? Or the Colts? Or anybody but the Patriots (who still have manager to choke a few times). The Chargers had one legit, full-on, complete choke job. That was 2006 when they went 14-2, had homefield advantage, and had the Patriots beat, but Marlon McRee fumbled a clinching interception away to give the game to Brady. Other than that, they've managed to win games they were expected to lose (Titans, the Colts twice), take the Patriots to the limit in the AFC Championship despite massive injuries, and lost on the road to the eventual champs last year.

The trophy case is still empty, all points of conjecture aside.

And the Chargers run D is still atrocious. The first team they go up against that can pound the ball will be the end of them.

Indeed, my point was that the cause of this has been "They weren't good enough" versus "They are choking chokers who always find a way to choke". Are they good enough this year? I actually think they could be if they ever get everyone healthy again. You don't have to be the best team to win the Super Bowl anymore.

Well, luckily for them they have the Eagles coming up, who can pound the ball but simply choose not to.

I don't know why... that is just how they roll.

I started the season thinking the Donkeys were going to be effing terrible. 6-2 is fine. I might re-think my opinion after a few more losses, but hey.
Stupid interceptions last night, but overall Orton has done well.
McDaniels looks kinda like a downy.

/When you have a sack monster named Elvis on your team, anything is possible

0MGWTFBBQ 2009-11-10 06:09:22 PM
What I saw last night:

1) Ineffective QB play
2) Horrible OL play (Orton always had a guy in his face)
3) Poor blitz pick-up (Moreno -- I'm looking at you -- you were hurdled by a Steeler as well)
4) Bailey being beaten like a drum by Steeler WR's
5) Bronco D unable to stop the run

To blame this all on Orton is pathetic -- the team as a whole lost the game. But Orton is an easy target.

veistran 2009-11-10 06:35:49 PM
Kyle Orton is Damon Huard if he started games earlier in his career. They both can't put the ball more than 10yds down field without loading up the wobble launcher and letting a duck go.

INeedAName 2009-11-10 06:41:14 PM
I love how fans just randomly turn on their team when a mini losing streak starts... You guys are 6-2 and still have a great shot at the playoffs.

Meanwhile, I've got my Ravens at 4-4, but I'm bad mouthing them now, because I tried to tell people at the beg of the season that they just werent as good as everyone said.

It is kind of hard saying that their Offence is lacking when they have faced 2 of the great defences in the last 2 weeks

I don't think that many teams could have done any better last night the way that the Steelers played on defence.

But hey, I'm not complaining...it actually gives the Chargers a chance at winning the division!

This was always going to be a hard matchup.

The maligned Broncos D gave up no points - zero points - in the first half. The TD was on an interception return. It wasn't their fault that they couldn't hold on with shiatty field position and an shiatty offense.

Next week, is definitely a gut check game against a "road"-apple.

The division will be won or lost against San Diego at home. They still have to play the Chiefs, twice; the Raiders at home, once.

They'll make the playoffs. But the way Indy's playing ...

Oh farkin please, there are like 4 constant Broncos fans on NFL threads, and none of us talk near the amount of shiat that's tossed our way. Jesus, you hate the Cowboys more than an Eagles fan, what the f? When did Dallas have a number 1 offense? Also, Dallas fans were on suicide watch at that point in the season. I have little confidence in the Cowboys after this month, so you are really talking out of your asshole. Pretty sure you'll be rooting for the Boys when they play the Chargers though. I don't even understand why you even brought the Cowboys into this equation, talk shiat about the Chargers and Raiders or something. Giants beat Dallas week 2 and now look at them, so I don't see how an early win has anything to do with current momentum. Peace.
