There should be a screening process for couples seeking IVF. If you're a religious person who objects to "wasting" viable embryos in order to further research the technique that you're seeking to get pregnant by, you don't get to use that technology.

And if stem cell research ends up curing cancer, people who opposed the research shouldn't be allowed that treatment if they get cancer.

Now the Potters face the dilemma of what to do with the other embryos.

They could place the embryos in the womb for gestation when they are ready to have more children. Another couple could adopt the embryos. They could donate to science. Or they could thaw the embryos and discard them.

If they decide they don't want any more kids, Option # 2 seems like an excellent solution to me.

Oh, and in keeping with the theme of the thread:

In-vitro fertilization made it possible for Adriana and Robert Potter to welcome twins Anabella and Matteus into the world. For the same reasons many couples can't conceive, IVF was their only option if they wanted children of their own. go against God's will.

theorellior 2009-11-10 11:05:26 AM
Well, they're undifferentiated blastocysts with no nerve endings, basal ganglia or notochord, so it's hard to get worked up about them. Also, there's a 30% chance they won't even implant, or spontaneously abort for genetic reasons. God's an asshole sometimes.

Yeah, if you are the sort of religious person that opposes abortion and stem cell research you should probably be adopting instead of doing IVF since adoption is the other option besides abortion for an unwanted baby...

The denying of embryonic stem cell research grants has driven many different groups to turn many other types of cells(skin cells) into better stem cells then what can be produced through embryos. The screening process should be this, can't have kids on your own, adopt.

We benefited from a procedure that came to be via research performed on embryos, but you can go fark yourself if you want to perform research on these other 2 embryos we're not using.

Seriously; religion causes more problems than it solves.

This is the future! You can make babies in a lab! It's time to cast off hokey religions & ancient superstitions.

Seriously, though, why didn't these people listen to what God's been telling them and not reproduce? I bet they just birthed the antiChrist, and God's doing a facepalm up in Heaven.

Okay, but if we end up with a bunch of soulless abominations roaming the land as empty shells for demonic possession, you guys don't get to go to Heaven. Or borrow the ammunition pouch.

Here is a tip: When your belief system fails to jibe with reality, life and the universe as it is, it does NOT mean that something is wrong with life and the universe as it is

Take faith out of the decision and use logic and reason.

I know logic and reason are bad words for the religious but I think, if you give them a try, they will serve you better than your invisible friend ever has.

krazydiamond [TotalFark] 2009-11-10 11:10:04 AM
Perhaps a decision they should have made before they received the treatment?

These people biatch and scream about abortion, calling the mothers murderers and saying there are other options. But they themselves are not willing to support these other options.

I'm curious how much damage is done the longer the embryo is frozen. At what point is it no longer viable?

Also, with all the orphans in this country and threat of overpopulation looming worldwide, adopt for Christ's sake.

Dude is an idiot. If you are Christian enough to not want human embryos used for a science experiment, you shouldn't have created a whole bunch just so your kid can match your couch. Maybe being infertile was God's way of telling them to actually show some love and take in one or two of the millions of kids without parents instead of building their own in a lab at great cost so that it's their genetic offspring.

Oldiron_79 2009-11-10 11:12:46 AM
A man releases enough sperm cells on a single ejaculation to repopulate the earth if every one of them fertilized an egg.

So if sperm and eggs are potential lives you kill more potential lives everytime you ejacuate(even if 1 of them get the woman preggers) than if you kiled every single actual living person on the planet.

You know for once I looked at TFA and don't feel a facepalm coming on.

Giving them to scientists for further research and donating them to other couples who can't do it on their own are both *really* good, useful, altruistic ideas.

If religious dad wanted to be an asshat, perhaps he could try insisting mom use them, divorcing her when she refuses and then holding a full church funeral for them.

yeah, I don't see it happening. The only way to reduce popuation will be a large scale war and people getting killed, people won't stop breeding.
