He got his plane flyable, after that much damage, with duct tape?

Sounds like he kept his stick on the ice

Sounds like he forgot to pay the piper..

Or, left some snacks in the plane.

The pilot flew home in that?

Wrath of Heaven [TotalFark] 2009-11-10 01:42:01 PM
The pilot radioed for two new tyres, three cases of duct tape and a couple of rolls of cellophane to be flown in so he could repair his craft and get home.

Everytime I hear or read "aeroplane" I feel like I'm hanging out with the Wright brothers.

Also, I enjoy that it was put back together with duct tape and cellophane.

Igor Jakovsky [TotalFark] 2009-11-10 01:58:48 PM
FTA: The fishy aroma attracted a passing grizzly bear who, clearly frustrated at not being able to see the lovely "noms" it could smell, took the plane apart in an effort to find it.

i was on the way to work one day about twelve years ago, when i came upon a herd of buffalo. it was on a preserve, and they don't care that you are in a hurry. i was almost an hour late. true story.i sure wish i had a camera with me. and to all you city folks...buffalo are bigger than they look on television.

aeroplane? I think the last time I seen that spelling and pronouncation used was in a WWI fighterplane doumentry.

Even us city folk have heard of Buffalo. Its just outside of New York city. I have to agree though. I have seen it on TV. The buildings look to be about 15 inches high. Small city indeed.

Right, Buffalo. near Yonkers, right?

//oh wait, I forgot, people from NYC don't care about anything north of 81st street.

I work in aviation so I heard about this awhile ago.

Here is a thread with a few more pictures

Pretty resourceful of the guy. The solution to any problem "Get me three cases of duct tape!"

Even better res. Nice.

From what other farkers were saying above, in the pictures you can see the guy's gun case mounted outside of the plane. Better to have it outside the cabin to start, but I would guess that it might be good to have quick access to it immediately after landing.

CMP 2009-11-10 02:42:55 PM
Just watched the Duct Tape episode of Mythbusters, so no surprises he could patch up that fabric with that stuff. Of course, fabric over welded tube is not structural in the same way stressed-skin Alclad is, so it wouldn't have worked so well on an all-metal plane.

'Aeroplane,' BTW, is more etymologically correct than 'airplane.' Tyres, maybe not so much. Of course, I couldn't use my Whitworth spanners on that Piper, either.

I hung out at a local FBO in aoutheast Florida years ago mooching rides and doing chores for rides and lessons. The first time I was there an old Piper bare airframe and a set of wings with the bottom cover missing was over to one side. My buddy explained that a salesman had rented it to fly into the Okeechobee area and had landed in a pasture at one of the brazillion cattle ranches out there. When he got back the cows had eaten all the cloth off the plane they could reach. Seems cows love the taste of the dope (banana oil?) used to pull the cloth tight on the frame. Just like a model airplane.

Had the bison block me a Tallgrass Prairie Parland, Pawhuska, Ok, 35K acres three roaming herds. Open to all.

Duct tape, I was introduced to it in the early 50s. We used it to cover the gun ports on jet fighters. Believe it was used in WWII for the same purpose only called -- ready-- gun port tape.

Down on the res, huh?

I really like Osage county. Even just driving highway 99 through there is enjoyable. Those Wah-Sha-She did OK for themselves in that respect.
