Great stuff, but um....

Here is a recap of the best moments at the philadelphia spectrum, before it's planned closure on september 30, 2009

Did the submitter just get out of his blue police box?

Everyone should enjoy this while it's still here. As soon as Drew wakes up, sees it, and then gets control of his hysterical sobbing it's going to get deleted.

Spectum was a cool building.

So very loud.

It sucked getting out of there as the whole arena dumped out into one narrow hallway.

danreb123456789 2009-11-10 08:25:01 AM
I was there for the Hextall goal and the Daigneault goal...never heard a building louder in my life when Daigneault scored.

Does anyone know when they're actually tearing it down?

jjp221 2009-11-10 08:45:28 AM
I think that the Flyers fan base should protest the demolition of the Spectrum by chaining themselves to the building seconds before the implosion. ;)

"We stayed in '72, and in '74 they're goin' home."

*giggle*

I brought this game up with my Russian friend a few years ago. He didn't seem to have the clear memory of it that I do.

Ah, the Spectrum. Saw a lot of fights in the parking lot hockey games and concerts there. RIP.

bullmk 2009-11-10 09:19:44 AM
it's coming down at the end of the month.

I've seen some of the best concerts of my life at the building. Went and saw pearl jam for the closing night - great show.

I only went to the Spectrum once. Back in 1995, the basketball game between Rutgers and then-#4 UMass was suspended at halftime because a bunch of students interrupted the game protesting against the president of the university. Rutgers was actually leading UMass (which had been ranked #1 the week before) 31-29.

I was the bass player in the Rutgers pep band. So three and a half weeks later, they get the band and cheerleaders together, put us on buses, and drive us down to the Spectrum to make up the second half of the game. There was a grand total of 445 people in attendance. It was like a bunch of kids had broken into an arena to play ball. It was EMPTY. I had to drag that amplifier all the way down there only to have no place to plug it in, not that I had anyone to play for anyway. So the first thing that happened was that UMass put Marcus Camby in. Since he was injured during the original game, UMass was called for a technical for using a non-roster player. Al Karner hit two free throws to put Rutgers up 33-29, only to lose to UMass in the end 77-62.

I saw Phish play there a bunch of times when I still lived in Jersey. They played some killer shows there, especially on the holiday run in 1996.

I also saw Aerosmith on the Get A Grip tour, when the car broke down on the way to the venue, my buddies left me and my friend to find a phone to call for help (this was before cell phones), we ended up riding to the show on the back of the tow truck and wandering around Broad Street after the concert trying to hitch a ride back to New Jersey.

Aerosmith's limo driver almost gave us a lift. Almost. BONUS (If it had happened): The limo was filled with drunk, horny groupies, which would have mattered if we were Aerosmith which, sadly, we were not.

jlawn001 2009-11-10 10:07:46 AM
I was in the front row for Van Halen. Michael Anthony gave me a beer.
I saw U2 there twice.
My favortie concert was G N R in 1991. 5th row.
That was a good place to be.

MugzyBrown [TotalFark] 2009-11-10 10:15:15 AM
I was their for opening night of the Jerry Stackhouse era of the 76ers. They actually won.

I was also there for opening night of the Sheron Wright era.. not sure the outcome.

Wasn't it 1976 that they left the ice until their pay for the entire series was threatened?

Last Spectrum shows for me were in '92...it was a rough set of shows for the fat man.

10/28/09 and 10/30/09 - Best concerts ever. First time in the Spectrum, now I'm mad they're tearing it down. You can't get sound like that in the new arenas.

Wow, talk about some boring moments. Jesus, when one of your building's highlights is some fat, old broad that nobody's ever heard of singing God Bless America, maybe you're better off just demolishing the place.

"Um, yeah...this building is full of history. Over there is where Magic Johnson played Center in a game. And right here is where that fat lady sang that stupid song that everybody hates. Ooh! This is the end of the court where Dr. J once made a layup. Can you feel the magic? Can you?"

I don't think much of Philly as a HOLE. And I've only done the drive in from the airport to the convention center a few times. But that arena has some neat history. The area around all of the stadiums is a shiathole of biblical proportions.

Get your kid ear plugs.
My son has the biggest mouth in world but can't stand loud noises (go figure)
but as long as he had them he was fine. Great sport for kids and at least up here all the adults were well behaved.
/I think it's more for the little ones anyway.
//like me some car crushin' though
///nitro engines inside ARE LOUD!!!!!!

I was born on an Air Force base in California and when I was six, we moved to Hawaii. When I was ten we got transferred to McGuire AFB, in Southern Jersey. One benefit was the base would have annual trips to Flyers games. Saw a great Canucks v. Flyers game in 1974, which resulted in me becoming a Canucks fan. We were in that small upper deck, it was like the game was happening on another planet. Good times, good times....

/Go Canucks

Yeah because every city builds NEW stadiums out in shiatville instead of downtown. Or NEAR downtown.

It's a 15 minute subway ride from downtown Philly to the stadium complex. It's probably only about 5 miles. I'm sure there are plenty of venues in the country that are both further away from and less accessible from the city's downtown than the Spectrum was.

Are you talking shiat on Kate Smith or the Spectrum? In either case you're an idiot, but I think that's what you're going for. How much of your life do you actually waste on Fark trolling?

Kate Smith singing at the Spectrum, even though I'm not even close to being alive long enough to have seen it, makes me truly happy to have been born a Flyers fan. It's a shame they have Lauren Hart singing it along with the recording nowadays, though.

/Even Orr and Espo, two Canadians, loved the performance (new window)

It's not really shiatville, and it's not far from downtown. It has pretty good access to two major highways and the bridge to NJ. Parking is decent.. gets pretty full for the eagles.

Plus the plan is to put some sort of commercial crap where the Spectrum stands.

Well, doesn't THAT clip make me feel old. I remember all those times, very well aware of the Soviets leaving the ice in 1976, of Kate Smith, of the Broad Street Bullies, Bobby (now Bob) Clarke's gappy grin. Wow. Sad to see the old joints go.
