With the exception of some of their military toys, NK hasn't advanced much beyond 1950.

They've still got a good 60 years to hit 2012.

I know they are millions of innocent people that would be hurt or killed, but I really like to see that little creep get taken to the woodshed.

2012 the movie is going to make Independence Day look like Oscar material. Yes, I plan to see it with a large group of people that also like MST3K.

North Korea's artillery can put down over 100 shells a second onto Seoul, half of that being of the chemical weapons variety. If the North Koreans decided to go full retard they could kill millions of people before we could do anything.

Would Seoul be farked if they went to war? Sure.

Do I think that North Korea really kept all those guns maintained enough to fire, the shell's new enough to not be duds, and the crew trained enough to handle them? Hell no.

Agreed. If NK was dumb enough to do that to SK, we'd retaliate. Not saying that we'd nuke them, but we'd be able to drop quite a few millions of tons of bombs on them in a short period of time. Nukes or not, it's futile for NK to do much of anything; they'd get obliterated within hours of their shenanigans.

Relax, everyone. This happens on a fairly regular basis. My brother-in-law was a KorLing (Korean Linguist) for the Navy. They had a lot of close calls flying around there.

He had this to so about the South Korean soldiers stationed along the DMZ, "Baddest bunch of mofos I've ever seen."

I've seen some fairly interesting analysis done of the Norks' military technology from declassified DoD stuff. As far as I can tell, aside from trying to get their nukes going, they're still in the 1950's. Hell they barely have any functional SAMs, they're homegrown, and the vast majority of important sites are either (marginally) underground (and known), or are ringed by the equivalent of Korean War era AAA batteries.

Yeah, they could kill a fairly large number of Sorks in the first salvo. Then the Sorks waltz in under US air cover and burn the north to the ground.

/won't be pretty

You have an old dictator ready to die who has had a hard-on over the idea of war for decades, and now he has nukes.

Sounds about right. South Korea would kick the shiat out of North Korea, but the cost would be high and there's the danger of China getting involved.

Definitely won't be pretty.

I don't disagree with you but doesn't the phrase "let it slide" kind of imply that they weren't the instigators? The article says blame is disputed, however NPR is blaming the North.

I would bet my ass that NK were the instigators, but that sure as hell isn't the way NK will spin it.

The problem isn't the reality of how it went down; the problem is that the guy has been looking for an excuse, and limping a ship back to port gives him (in his own mind) justification for calling SK the aggressor.

China seems to be less and less patient with NK these days. The PRC keeps sticking its neck out on NK's behalf and NK keeps squandering the good will.

A navy is critical for protecting trade routes, so would this constitute a supplies attack?

Oznog [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-11-10 03:12:01 AM
Keep in mind the big picture here.
Kim Jong-il is in poor health.
Kim Jong-un is appointed successor (in a surprise, it was thought that it would be the older son). Kim Jong-un is only 25 and has no "personality cult" built around him.

It's unclear how dedicated the nation will be in following him. He's got no resume. So Kim Jong-il may be setting up a mini-war for him to triumph in and become the new savior of the nation. Various generals and officials are vying for attention during the transition, to appear too important to leave out of the inner circle. Some may even wish to displace this young upstart. So, they may be acting less "predictably" than in previous years to gain such attention.

But, it's all speculation. Frankly, nobody knows fark-all about how the insane political dynamics inside NK work. We can just expect to be surprised one way or the other, but the important thing to remember is that it's got nothing to do with us. It's all due to the transition and we can't do much about that.

You'd be amazed how few people realize that even with 1960s tech that Seoul is highly vulnerable to attack and there's not a damn thing we could do to stop it.

We'd scramble whatever we had, and probably obliterate half the N. Korean attack in a matter of hours but by then Seoul would be a charred mess and the casualties would be unlike anything seen since WW2.

Very good point. Hope you're wrong.

Oznog: Kim Jong-un is only 25 and has no "personality cult" built around him.

In fact his "cult" is slowly being created. There was a news a while ago that his personal anthem is distributed among Pyongyang's high citizens.

Oznog: Frankly, nobody knows fark-all about how the insane political dynamics inside NK work.

What we know from China and Japan is that North Korea has two political divisions:

1. politicians under the leadership of the central party
2. influential military officers of diverse background and power

Apparently this simple explanation leads a decently reasonable conclusion why there are so many petty incidents between the DMZ: healthy competition between two major factions.

While you're certainly correct on the amount of firepower that NK could launch into SK whenever they feel like it, it'd be a mistake to assume SK didn't know this and plan for the contingency.

/aka "so long as military assets stay intact, we will survive"

GentlemanJ 2009-11-10 03:22:38 AM
Personally, I wouldn't count on China coming to KJI's rescue. He's been an embarrassment and a pain to Beijing for some time. Are they really going to interfere as long as we promise to not cross into China? Hell, they might help us! This sure as hell isn't 1950, and the CCP sure isn't the same as it was then!
