Well, we now know a college that will be getting a lot of hate mail. What is the administration's problem? She shaved her head to raise money for cancer research after her father was diagnosed with leukemia.

* Girl suspended for shaving head
* Was raising money for cancer research
* Her dad is battling cancer

I really appreciate the handy outrage bullet points at the beginning of TFA. Real time saver.

Yup. From what I've read she's a little shiat, and this was the last straw. Whether it should've been or not is the issue, I guess. But the Admin were looking for an excuse.

"My crap behaviour means I'm an individualist who cares about the planet, more than your stupid grown-up rules!"

Now I will have my siesta.

Although I do agree that this wasn't worthy of punishment. But shiat adds up, and the little dictators who run schools have long memories.

I wonder, would the school have suspended the girl if she had cancer and lost her hair due to treatments?

i'm just guessing that those on going issues stemmed from depression about her dad's condition.

Me and my son had crazy long hair for so long we were able to raise about $1500 for the American Cancer Society, on a "dare" to shave our heads.

I'm wondering this myself. Although I'm sure someone will point out some private all-girls Christian college in Alabama as an example.

shivashakti: Is "college" what they called "high school" in Australia??

Yep. It's usually private or church high schools are called colleges. More common is some states than others.

Some post-secondary trade/diploma schools can also be called colleges. But it's never used for University like it is in the US. We call that "Uni" here, almost exclusively.

"Post secondary diploma school" sounds a lot more awkward to say than "community college".

Okay, so she's a little brat. But is shaving her head so disruptive that you need a rule against it? Unless she did it while tap-dancing on her teacher's desk, or we're bring back Old Testament rules, it seems like a pretty harmless, out-of-school activity.

Even if you really wanted thought she needed to have hair, couldn't you just make her wear a habit or somesuch?

Oh, that's not what they're actually called. I was just trying to explain what type of school can be labelled a "college". It's either high schools that can carry "college" in their name (an in TFA), or some community college or diploma/trade school level schools can carry "college" as part of their name.

It's not used for University level though. It's associated with high school and trade school level too much, so calling Uni "college" here would make it sound like it's not University level.

The common name for community college here is actually "tafe".

TAFE

dobro 2009-11-10 12:46:28 AM
Nope, that's a ballsy chick and the school should STFU and let her do her thing. "Other issues", I think, are just as imagined by the school personnel.

Having known a few people who had a parent die while they were a teenager I'd have to agree. I've also noticed that a lot of people aren't very clueful about that.

Also religious schools tend to expel students that bother the administrators beautiful minds. For instance I met a guy who was expelled from Catholic school because he lost a hand in an accident. And a GF that was expelled after she developed epilepsy after a bout with meningitis. Oh and the other lady who was asked not to come back after she was burned in a fire.

platkat [TotalFark] 2009-11-10 12:51:00 AM
I violated my old school's dress code too many times to count. I wasn't suspended, but I could see how a bald girl with enough demerits could send them over the edge even though her reason was legit.

T-Luv 2009-11-10 12:53:13 AM

T-Luv: Would they have kicked out a male for shaving his head?

If the dress code was violated, yes.

A lot of you people on fark don't seem to get this: Rules are still there even if your reason for breaking them is alright. The firefighter with the flag on his locker. Some other recent situation I don't remember. This here.

Yeah, I know why she did it.

But like.

Come on, guys, it's not like that means the rule doesn't exist. >_>

quasimike 2009-11-10 12:55:41 AM
No matter what her past issues are/were this particular issue is just plain stupid, and the "college" should be ashamed of itself for using it as a springboard for her suspension. Shame on everyone involved in the decision making process, which must have involved a lot of hand-wringing and evil, ominous laughter.

That stance might make sense if we weren't living in a world burdened with so many stupid and haphazardly enforced rules that it is impossible for anyone to know them all.

Given the number of people who neglect to read anything other than headlines, I think news.com.au understands the average internet user, and has adapted to them in a wise manner; the reader might have at least a slight grip on wtf the article was about. Well thanks for not posting the links, braying ass, I was responding to your comment about the story posted. Bray some more by linking the stories you're braying about. Then I'll read those links, understand the truth about the story, and still think you're kinda dumb for not posting the links in the first place, then braying about it.

She was on the radio today, she sounded very smart and was extremely eloquent.

When she told her headmistress that she was going to do it she was told "I don't want any freaks in my school" Classy, and vague, she didnt't say no and who would call someone who does this sort of thing a freak?

Also all the male teachers at the school shave their heads for the same charity!
