(WTOP) Obvious Douchebag cyclist runs red lights and stop signs, rides on sidewalks and roads where cyclists are not allowed, and is completely indifferent to the traffic congestion he is causing. It's okay though, because he is the mayor of Washington DC   (wtop.com) divider line 138

i'd prefer if he were, then he'd be inside, alone, not bothering anyone.

The last Mayor that was on crack was not inside, alone, so why should this one be forced to do it that way?

I think the people should be happy to see their Mayor out in public doing something healthy, instead of the Marion Barry style of governance, or the other, typical, crap that politicians in that part of the country are always showing.

Over the past several months, WTOP videotaped the mayor and his team on multiple dates as the team - escorted by D.C. Police motorcycle officers - rode on parkways where bikes aren't permitted, ran red lights and stop signs and created traffic backups wherever they went.

And where might this compelling footage be?

So what should I do to keep riding in the winter?

My road bike is now rolling on 700x28 all condition tires.

The city plows the bike paths before many residential neighborhoods, mostly because schoolchildren use the bike paths.

What's a good way to keep the ice out of the derailleurs?

Or should I open up the purse strings and buy a single speed with spiked tires?

TheJoeY 2009-11-09 11:36:51 PM
This summer I picked up a bike because I wanted to get into shape and figured my car wasn't handling very well the 2-3 mile sprints between my home and anywhere I happen to be going, and while researching what kind of bike I wanted, how to take care of it properly, etc., I was also looking up local ordinances and trying to find out how to get around town without being one of those "cyclist douchebags."

I stop at stop signs, I stop at red lights (but run them since they never turn green for me), but I ride on the sidewalk wherever I can if there isn't a clearly delineated bike lane. Foot traffic where I live isn't very heavy (save during home games), so I'm not really inconveniencing anyone. Really I'm just too scared to ride in the street, and figure since 99.9% of the time I'm the only thing on the sidewalk, everyone involved would prefer me be there and not in traffic.

/figured this was one of those "douchebag cyclist stories" threads.
//not trying to be a douchebag

beer4breakfast 2009-11-09 11:37:38 PM
The bicycle riders in the bay area piss me off to no end. When they ride in the street they ignore traffic signals and signs even when it involves pedestrians. Just this last weekend I'm crossing at a residential intersection and this bicycle rider coming down the hill to my left says 'beep beep' to get me to stop and blows right by me, ignoring his stop sign. What a bunch of pretentious twats. They whine about cars not sharing the road with them yet they don't even give pedestrians the right away when they should.

aren't we all, in some small way, the Mayor of DC? Haven't each of us, in our own way, held up traffic with our illegal biking shenanigans? and if this is true, then isn't this an indictment of the entire American roadway system? Well I for one will not stand by and let this article badmouth the United States of America!

Hakkapeliittas. Fenders. Windproofing for your extremities.

Maybe ski goggles if you ride below 0°F. I find that below zero my eyelashes start to freeze together in inconvenient ways.

BTW, if you will be storing your bike outside for some sizeable percentage of the day, I recommend a thinner chain lube. Your big temperature breakpoints for when stuff starts to act funny are 32°F, 20°F, 0°F, and -10°F.

As a regular walker to work (1.7 mi, right through downtown) I am much more at risk from rogue cyclists than the occasional aggressive car.

Reasons why

- Car has plates, which means accountability.

- Car has a lot more invested in not hitting me

- If car hits me everyone will take my side

Compare contrast:

- Bike will obey whatever laws it feels like

- Bike won't care if it hits me in a crosswalk, then will get off the bike and start a shoving match with me because I got in his way (THIS HAPPENED)

- Bike has no insurance, no accountability, no plates

- Bike rider profound sense of entitlement, they rule the moral high ground, just ask them.

Bottom line: Bike riders downtown are a far greater risk to someone walking than are cars.

Fkn Fixie Asshats.

It really is. I miss Williams.

Fenty seems to have missed the "mayor isn't God" lesson that Barry proved time and time again. He's acting like he's the new Mayor Daley without any background, family connections, or money to justify it.

Got some planet bike speedez "shorty" fenders for the fall rainy season, as full size fenders won't fit under the brake bridge or fork crown.

They strap on. Neat design, really. I'll be taking them and the 28s off when the racing season starts.

Nobody makes snow spikes for road bikes.

Sidewalk riding is legal in many places, and often the only safe place to be. And sometimes trails dump you off on the wrong side of the road for the 1/4 mile that they're following a road, and you're supposed to stay on that side. So, perhaps you should calm down just a little bit..
