So, I'm torn. Lots of folks locally have had it. Yet I have 2 kids. Shot, or not, for them?

One kid who got diagnosed today (monday) spent all last friday at my house playing with my 2 kids. Thoughts? I don't see a down-side and am leaning strongly to giving them the shot, both of 'em, and me and mom. Can anyone who isn't a zealot of anti-science give me a real reason to (a) no, or (b) not bother?

whargllbarble need not respond please.

I say can't hurt to get a vaccine. I haven't seen any reports of major side effects. That said, it doesn't guarantee protection, so it's possible to still get it.

I think I'll get the shot when I see the doctor on Monday. I am a bit leary, as the last time I got a flu shot it gave me the flu...

A friend died from H1N1 last week. More of a friend of friends. It's very weird hearing someone you know being listed as a statistic on the news.

Certainly can't hurt. However, since they may be infected already I'm not sure that the vaccine can really help. I got a regular flu shot a month ago, days before I got hit with (non-h1n1), you guessed it, the flu.

Definitely the kids, especially if they're younger. You and the old lady... not so much.

...getting my 1 & 3 year olds vaccinated tomorrow. No fears, whatsoever.

Got my shot two weeks ago... and this is a guy who never gets a flu shot. The only side effect I had was a sore arm.

Thing is, kid in question and my kids get the whole handwashing thing. I don't see any reason to NOT have them get the shot, despite a possibly redundancy of same having been exposed, maybe, to (friend) for (few hours), who gets the whole (handwashing) thing.

To be honest, I am disgusted by those who spread FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) about things they don't understand, be it inoculations, or windows antivirus programs, or any other vaguely scientific topic that the masses just aren't qualified to get. If someone here could articulately explain why I shouldn't have my kids immunized for H1N1, I'd listen and consider. The only anti-shot people I"ve seen so far are in the tinfoil hat brigade and in the "Thimeresol is evil, but I can't tell you why, I just heard it somewhere so LISTEN TO ME"!""!"!""!"!eleventy!" crowd.

Anyone in the "don't do it" group got anything worthy of the careful examination by the scientific method? I'll read it. If it starts with, or contains whargllgarble, not so much, save your breath.

A week ago for me. The closest lymph node got a little swollen, but that's it.

JonnyBGoode: I think I'll get the shot when I see the doctor on Monday. I am a bit leary, as the last time I got a flu shot it gave me the flu...

No it didn't. The flu shot is dead virus. The shot can make you sick and feel like you have the flu, or you could have contracted the flu and the symptoms appeared before the vaccine was effective. However, it is impossible for a flu shot to give you the flu.

Sorry for being pedantic, but I heard this excuse too many times today from parents not wanting their children inoculated.

Hubby and I got our vaccines last week. The day our kids were scheduled to get inoculated, they both came down with fevers. My little girl has been sick for five days with fever, headache, cough and runny nose, but she still has the same level of energy--hell, she wanted to jump on the trampoline today.

Gonna get her swabbed tomorrow due to the duration of fever. Hoping it's not anything terrible.

It's been going through our schools and preschools, but haven't heard of anything more serious than missing a few days of school.

*clears throat- parents are scared because ----the flu vaccine that is inhaled is a LIVE WEAKENED VIRUS---AND in 1976 they inoculated children and pregnant women and it went HORRIBLY WRONG. And BTW the Vaccine that is a shot is not DEAD it is INACTIVE..and they do not know if the virus becomes active again since studies are starting to show that 30 years later the "dead" inactive virus becomes active again.

I'm pretty sure that my husband had it. 103 degree temperature, horrible cough, body aches, headache, slept a lot... It lasted over a week and really knocked him on his ass. I got sick a day or so after he did. I had a cough, body aches, and headache, but I only had a minor fever plus a runny nose, but I was better in just a few days. I'm just wondering if we had different bugs and if I can get the vaccine, maybe I should. Just thinking outloud...

Meh, if either of you truly had H1N1 you'd both be super dead and those around wouldn't have a prayer.
