What do you do with the bloody dog carcasses after you've mushed them?

Is this to feed bears? I don't like bears.

This sounds like it'd be a great job if it weren't for all the cold, snow, and isolation.

Sounds pretty awesome actually. Of course I know nothing about mushing dogs and have questionable survival skills so they would be finding my frozen corpse at some point.

Killer Cars [TotalFark] 2009-11-09 06:39:09 PM
And the pay range of $33,477 to $66,542 -- plus a healthy 25 percent cost of living adjustment -- is more than what many mushers earn in a race season.

Jesus...that's a hell of a range. DOE? Commission on amount of dogs you can train?

2 Questions:

1) Do I have to be sober? If so, how much?

2) Do these living benefits include as much bourbon as I can drink?

/three I guess

FTA: As part of the federal bureaucracy... "Our candidate must be a strong leader with supervisory skills and..."

I'm calling shenanigans right here.

"And just like with any federal or government job, there's that whole level of paperwork," Fortier recounted. "You think it's going to be this glory job, but so much is managing the operation behind the scenes."

That's more like it. Bureaucratic efficiency. An oxymoron if there ever was one.

Ignominiousbob 2009-11-09 06:44:26 PM
Fortier, who ran a team of racing dogs with her husband before being hired as manager in 2000, published the book "Sled Dogs of Denali National Park," two years later.

I predict his video, Denali Sled Girls Gone Wild, will make him more money.

2) A Baskin-Robbins iced weiner.

What sort of dogs? I'm pretty sure wiener dogs or pugs won't cut it.

Actually it isn't but most bureaucrats turn into dicks who think the job is about them and their miniscule amount of authority over others.

I didn't look at the job description, but if it's a government job that sounds like a GS-7/9.

In a nutshell, you'd get hired at the low end, work up through GS-7 Step 1, Step-2, etc. for a couple of years, and eventually might roll into a GS-9. Takes several years as a GS-9 to pull in 66K/year.

Like I said, not sure about this one... but that's usually how those jobs work.

Actually met this couple when I was in AK in August. Pretty cool pair. Got to see a mushing demo, too. One thing I didn't know: almost NONE of the dogs look like the ones you see in movies.

Seriously, if I didn't have a house, mortgage, and y-chromosome-deficient cohabitator to worry about, I'd seriously consider it.

/they probably want some kind of previous applicable experience though

Thinking about moving to Anchorage to take an open position at my job.

COLA is good (23% tax-free in my case,) no state income tax, no state sales tax, and once you've been a resident for a year you get a check from the oil fund for $2K or so every year.

And despite being Alaska, Anchorage is about 270K population, and has all the amenities you'd find anywhere else.

Check the prices for groceries, electronics, furniture and vehicles. I know a guy who used to buy a 4 x 4 truck in Chicago in early summer and drive it to Alaska. He would usually stay for a couple of months driving it around, then sell it for as much or more than he bought it for 4 months and 12-15000 miles ago.

Cost of living is higher, especially if you don't live in Anchorage or Fairbanks. And Denali is not right outside either of them, about 120 from Fairbanks and 240 from Anchorage. Not a huge distance, but if you forget toilet paper you'll either pay what the local place asks or you better have lots of old magazines.

Anchorage passed 300K several years ago. I think we are approaching 350K soon.

No you dont get a check from the "oil" fund for 2K. The PFD is a fund developed and money from all natural resources goes into it. Oil is a huge contributor but with gold right now is making a big contribution. This year the PFD was 1305 and its based on a 5 year avg rate of return on the principle.
