30 miles from shore getting hammered by storm surge. I posted a TFD about it. Going to get coffee.

Gwendolyn: Well good luck.

A cat one is really no bug deal, but I like to have beer or Daquiris during hurricanes.

Daughter gets out of school at noon and I am bringing her back to my office. I need a lantern but I do NOT want to go to Wal-Mart

Yeah maybe hit a local hardware place instead. Heck even a Dollar General kinda place would have big flashlights.

I am never again buying a lantern/flashlight from DG. Everyone I bought, broke. I want to get a Coleman flashlight lantern. Hardware store might be a good idea

Closest Bass Pro is 20+ miles away. Might try Academy Sports

I love when the local channels send the news rookie out into a hurricane. Years ago, I recall the High Point (NC) station had a live feed from some dumbass halfway out on a pier in Eastern NC. You could see spray coming up behind him. Then a wave crashed over the pier, knocked him and the camera man over, and all you saw was an extreme closeup of the wooden pier planks for a second, then a blank screen. They cut to the anchors in the studio, and the first one says "Gosh, I hope they are okay!". And the anchor/producer (Neil McNeill) says "Yeah, and that was a $50,000 camera." Doh!

K-Mart also (usually) carries a good selection of camping/hunting gear. I have a Coleman rechargeable electric lantern (that looks like the gas lantern). It's 10 years old and still works great. Has cables that came with it to charge from both AC and DC. With both bulbs on you get about 2 hours per charge, 4 hrs if you only use one bulb. But gas might be better for a long-term loss of power. YMMV

That is the exact lantern I want. No more K-Marts here. Will try Target.

I had one of those too. However now I also have a 4 four year that seems to be able to take things apart in the blink of an eye. It as nice to leave plugged in the kitchen so it went on when the power goes out.

...which is does here all the freaking time.

Meh! I hope at least the power goes out so I can take me ass off of work today!

Good luck coastal dwellers! :)

Just heard our Panama City office is closing for the day. Bastards! They never close the Orlando office...even when the A/C goes out in the middle of the summer and my thermometer reads 93 degrees in my cube.

Better farking do that. I didn't move down here just to get hit by a frakking category anything goddammit.

Supposed to. However, it's weakened to a TS now, and is being sheared to pieces. Most of the convection decoupled this morning and ran to the coast, but that mostly is going to Mobile and Pensacola. Even if it shifts and hits NOLA, you're not going to get hit by much of anything.

It's all good. I got me a hat to keep the rain, sun, and palm fronds off me.

Also, I'm currently in a 22 story building across the street from the Superdome. I'm not particularly concerned with nature in the least.

The only complaint I have about mine is that the top unscrews fairly easily, and is a biatch to get back on correctly (lining up the contact points). But mine is an old model, and they may have improved on the design.

It goes to the beach at least once a year and has held up. The handle is beginning to show rust. But I've been impressed with how long it's been working, and still holds a good charge.

Target online shows they carry a number of Coleman lanterns. Looks like a good place to start.

It's all that cool weather that just passed through North Florida that's breaking it up (I suppose, though I'm no meteorologist). Hopefully it will come back soon (the weather, not the storm). I have hot chocolate that needs drinking.

Heh. I'm surprised myself. But the local infrastructure is so shiatty that the power cuts out if one stiff wind blows. The whole island will probably be dark by 2:00 today.
