There's still a Fry's supermarket? I thought Safeway bought them out 20 years ago.

Fry's is owned by Kroger.

Fry's supermarkets are owned by Kroger, not Safeway. For whatever reason, supermarket conglomerates often keep the original names of stores in some geographic areas.

Crap. I knew I should have skipped the second sentence.

The Fry's Markets in the bay area all turned into Safeway's except for one that's now a Frys electronic store. I don't think Krogers has stores in California.

you're doing it wrong?

/sometimes unions need to make themselves a reason for them to exist...

Gah UFCW is the worst union ever. Recently, the UFCW Local here in Oregon got their entire union leadership arrested, by harassing people at a Fred Meyer on the sales floor, then cried about how they were allowed to talk to their workers. They also recently doubled the price of their health care, while simultaneously doubling the co-pay percentage and the deductibles, and dropping dental and vision from it without extra fees.

FTFA: Employees currently pay nothing for health insurance, and the companies have proposed premiums of $5 to $15 per week, depending on the coverage.

These people are whining about this? Really? Cry me a f*cking river.

They own Food 4 Less & Ralph's in California.

pension/h&w is a separate organization than the union local [ERISA/MPAA law]

Oh, I know. I'm just saying that the local union leadership here is completely incompetent, and that seems to be something handed down from the national level.

stupid unions

I once HAD to be part of a union, when I worked at Albertson's. If you didn't sign up, you got fired. Basically, it cost me $45 a month, and the one time I needed them they told me to F*ck off.

of course all the media does is report on the rally against the strike by workers.

How many people were there? 25.

How asinine. In Phoenix, we are over the national average for unemployment (so over 10%). Anyone with a register experience can get a job as a scab cashier, and so the union people are only hurting themselves.

Besides, they are complaining about paying for healthcare? I thought unions existed to keep employees safe from harm, and real abuse, like 10 hour days with no breaks, or unpaid overtime.

Unions are like Courtney Love. Both are bloated, foul and corrupt, both lurch onward, oblivious to the contempt they elicit from decent people, and sneering with the utter conviction of their righteousness.

I watched unions kill my hometown (mining), so I have long hated them. Now they've killed the auto industry. Samuel Gompers had a great idea, but unions kill their host.
So, I was the happiest scab during the So. Cal grocer's strike. I got paid $19.80/hr and met/married the last good looking straight guy in town. That strike was the best thing that ever happened to me.
/Guess I deserved the slashed tires

The stores could tell the union to go to hell, the workers could tell the union to go to hell...

A few years ago, they had a supermarket strike here in Southern California. It lasted a few months.
The stores hired replacements, who were good enough. It isn't rocket science here, plenty of people are available to do the jobs if the workers do strike.

It only ended because the public didn't cross the picket lines as much as the stores hoped they would.

That will be the key. If customers keep coming, the stores won't need to rehire anyone who does strike.

Administration is, yes. But the benefit levels are set by the collective bargaining agreement.

My sister who is a nurse is in this union. Why are they in the hospital?

Anyways here is some math:
Union dues 11 a week
Healthcare cost 10 a week (split the difference between 5 and 15)

AZ is a right to work state, so quit the union and you will be up a dollar.

I do not understand the point of unions anymore. I understand their need 100 years ago, when children were worked for pennies a day morning noon and night. I understand their used to be alot of unsafe working conditions and unfair compinsation.
But seriously, these conditions no longer exist.
The only function they serve is line pockets of the union leaders and politicians in bed with them... all with the promise of a job for life and every increasing benefits.
All the while millions work everyday in similar professions with no union ie..Toyota for example, and have better productivity and work environments.
Unions need to die and stop strangling the private sector.

$45 a month is a lot if you're making $9-10/hour.( guesstimate on grocery store wages ).

I'd rather spend it on upgrading my internet connection...
