The article says the group was entitled "define statutory" but gives no other substantive information.

From that description, it sounds like the group was complaining about the often-noted absurdity of things like "statutory rape" when an 18 year old sleeps with a 17 year old, etc. Does anyone have information about whether that is the case?

THIS.

There is no information in the article whatsoever, other than the tidbit that the group has been deleted, so I cant even go check it out.

^^ what mattharvest said. If that was the case, I agree that the laws should be looked at again... something needs to change in that area.

As for the article - way to go with the shock factor, asshats.

it's not rape, it's surprise sex.

Seriously though - if they are 15 but spread their legs willingly, that's not rape.

The kinda rape that I will say is bad when it's the kind that's forced/violent/and where she tries to fight em off.

Possibly, though at least some of the members may be NAMBLA types who want to legalize sex with 14 year olds.

For the record, I support allowing such people to promote their views. They should be punished socially, not legally, so long as they keep it to advocacy and not action.

I noticed that too. if that is the case, then it's a perfectly legitimate discussion group. I also have no idea what statutory rape laws are like in Australia.

Are you kidding? You think 15 year olds don't need to be protected from their own poor judgment? Even that is questionable, but I don't see you making any exception in your argument for any age. 12? 8? At what point does a child not even know what sex means, or that they have the right to refuse it?

These laws exist for a reason.

Yeah, the article does lack a lot of important information. For instance, was Glenn Beck merely in the group, or did he create it? Could he have created it in the 90s? Exactly how is his victim doing, or did he kill her?

15 years old is still a kid. If the person having willing sex with her isn't a peer, and is an adult, it's questionable.

Would social punishment include expulsion from a university, public or private?

SpiderQueenDemon [TotalFark] 2009-11-08 08:38:16 PM
Questioning statutory rape laws does not make a person pro-rape. It means they wish the merits of a legal system with gross potential for abuse to be re-examined, nothing more.

Though, to be fair, I myself questioned statutory rape laws on a very frequent basis when I was a fifteen-year-old. Sometimes even in the back of a station wagon, with a nineteen-year-old who was willing to listen to my political arguments. We had many such 'discussions' and I don't recall any ill effects whatsoever, especially considering we had discovered the possibility of combining technologies of 97, 98 and 75% effectiveness to produce a near-impossibility of failure. But there again, we were nerds.

/23 now, husband is 27. Married one month, dating for...considerably longer, shall we say?

Came here to note this.

Thread over in one.

But the Minister for Wimmin and assorted Wimmin's groups have to justify their existence... so ya gots to milk it... ramp up the rhetoric... go easy on the facts.

Silly question out of the heart of randomness:

If a minor is emancipated, should it still count as statutory as they were obviously deemed adult enough to be emancipated?

Of course that's what the website was about. There can be no other answer aside from a wildly inappropriate parody site. That's why the the apparently biased "reporter" didn't explain it and left us in the dark because she felt people wouldn't be properly upset if they were told the whole story. That isn't proper journalism.
