Yes. They seemed to be afraid of the chemotherapy more than anything, Mom had a relative that she saw suffer through it earlier.

So the "religious belief" turned out to be some complete woo and scam, where the kid (via his parents) paid money to be a "shaman" in some supposedly Native tradition. This case had a little bit for everyone...

For all the nostalgic reminiscing about the "honest pagans" and cynical observations about conversion by sword, the fact is that it was the monks who were the most progressive element of European society in that period - whether it be as regards education, slavery, medicine (crude as it was) or law.
