"Daniel gained national attention when he stopped treatment after one session in February and fled, citing his religious beliefs. After he returned, he underwent court-ordered chemo to treat Hodgkin's lymphoma, then started radiation therapy."

It's not like the fleeing helped all that much.. Though i'm sure that won't stop people from thinking that he cleared his cancer while he was on the lam..

What a perfect metaphor for the current health care debate. Note to Teabaggers: Liberty-denying socialist health care reform will still fix what ails ya. You're welcome.

Thirteen seems too young to have solid religious beliefs, or at least your own. He's a kid, he was scared.

He probably has a bright future as a politician though.

I doubt his religious beliefs really had anything to do with his not wanting chemotherapy, I imagine it was the chemotherapy itself that drove him away.

My mother had chemo... It isn't something I would wish on a child, that's for sure.

Sweet. So next time I break my arm or my dad needs prescription drugs for his high blood pressure, I'll skip the doctor and go pray at a church instead.

When my car breaks down, I don't need to take it to a mechanic. I'll just say a dozen hail marys and that will fix it.

Why is it so hard to reconcile science and religion? If god's in charge, god gave us medicine and the technology to sustain life. If not, natural innovation did.

If I were God, I'd be pretty pissed if I gave someone the capability to survive and improve humanity and they shunned it and expected me to do it for them.

Even if true, that's more a damning statement about humanity than it is a positive statement about religion.

No, his parents were ordered by the court to provide it. It's funny, but according to the law, you have to care for your child. This includes providing food, shelter, and medical care.

It took a court order to get him to take cancer treatments? You can get charged for not taking treatment? Seems kinda wrong in a free society.

As the spokesman for the Mantabulous family I would like to stress that there have been NO, that is ZERO, incidents of chicken rape in the Mantabulous family within the past year.

The media should leave this family alone, they are just normal private people trying to live their lives, and there is no longer any chicken or dolphin rape occurring within their compound. Leave this family alone.

SeamusFerrell: Is this the kid whose mother tried to take him from MN to Mexico via northern CA (or somewhere that doesn't make sense)?

Yes. They seemed to be afraid of the chemotherapy more than anything, Mom had a relative that she saw suffer through it earlier.

So the "religious belief" turned out to be some complete woo and scam, where the kid (via his parents) paid money to be a "shaman" in some supposedly Native tradition. This case had a little bit for everyone...

Here's a May post from Respectful Insolence blog (link pops) with links to more details.

Good news that he's recovered, absolutely.

Might want to give Religion a bit for the whole holding together human civilization for a long enough time period for us to actually get science going in the first place.

Yes. The "religion, source of all evils" backlash tends to ignore the positive social benefits of the Christian church especially around c.600 to c.1100. For all the nostalgic reminiscing about the "honest pagans" and cynical observations about conversion by sword, the fact is that it was the monks who were the most progressive element of European society in that period - whether it be as regards education, slavery, medicine (crude as it was) or law.
