Of course not, goblet cels makes mucin, which mixes with water to make mucus.

Well, this is weird.

I was just telling my wife about this, erm, old wives tale the other day.

CtrlAltDelete 2009-11-08 02:20:16 PM
I think it's about time that old wives shut the f*ck up about stuff. Being married for awhile in no way qualifies them for dispensing medical advice with such arrogance and authority.

pedroloco 2009-11-08 02:24:42 PM
As someone who just drank a glass of milk I'm getting a kick out of this....

This doesn't apply to breast milk.

Someday you will get over what they said about you, really.

Yes, "Science says". When one has to travel to Australia to find the one scientist supporting your preconceived notions, well you know it is good.

I get mucus whenever I drink milk, so the science must be flawed somehow.

Saborlas [TotalFark] 2009-11-08 02:33:13 PM
I have a friend who will immediately claim that this study is false because he suffers from Illusionary Milk Mucus Syndrome and he thinks the "extra" mucus is real. Hell, the only thing to drink at my place that DOESN'T cause him some type of discomfort is my hidden stash of soda cans.

Then again, he's my main reason for believing that the plural of anecdote is not data.

He puts the sensation down to the texture and viscosity of milk, and notes that most people do not report similar effects with other dairy products such as cheese.

Yeah... ummm... about that. If I drink milk or eat cheese, I go from mucus-free to throat-clearing, nose-blowing misery within 30 minutes. What explains it?

BobaFeet 2009-11-08 02:37:53 PM
Cow's milk has no place in a human body... sick or not sick, mucus or no mucus.

An allergy?

Amy78 2009-11-08 02:41:38 PM
I always thought the mucus was always there, but that milk made it thicker and/or stickier.

Sounds like a dairy allergy.

ParadisePornoTheater 2009-11-08 02:45:10 PM

and you grow body hair and you become allergic to deoderant, and have to live in a comune.

Ask a singer about this -- milk certainly produces something. And drinking lemon juice, straight up, has another, beneficial effect on the voice.

BobaFeet: Cow's milk has no place in a human body... sick or not sick, mucus or no mucus.

Say that in Wisconsin, and you'd get your ass kicked by angry farmers...

six_ft_to_infinity 2009-11-08 02:49:47 PM
What they didn't say was what type milk was used. If the study was done with skim milk, yes, you may not react. However, I've noticed with drinking whole milk, and eating ice cream, I get kind of 'phlegmy' afterwards. Switched to 1%, problem solved.

Interesting article.

MrS refuses to touch soy, so I just got a grateful kick here.

So it was just a viscous rumor?

FarkinDaffy 2009-11-08 02:50:48 PM
I'll confirm this all you want. I'll get pic to prove it too.

Out of the 500 cows at the farm next door, there isn't a single one without a snotty runny nose!

lol

Those that have allergy or digestive problems can drink their milk as hot as can be tolerated, with a little turmeric and cardamom added (or saffron if wealthy) and a little sugar. Yummy. Also, a slice of ginger helps.

This is just common farking sense.

I thought everybody knew this was an old wives tale? Are performers that precious that they cling onto any bit of nonsense?

I can't believe you named your vagina "soy", and that in lieu of touching it, your husband kicks it instead, and that you are grateful for it.

/that's messed up, lady

Really. What about "old single-mother's tales"? You never hear about those, and these people have some sound advice, I'm sure.

Yes. I've known plenty of singers/actors and they have more superstitions than whole baseball teams.

BobaFeet, People from northern Europe have evolved to utilize milk, along with everyone else who has the mutated genes letting them digest lactose as adults.

My pet theory is that the addition of vitamin D to milk does something bad to the milk's composition. If you drink milk at a farm, that has not had that crap added, it goes down like nectar.

What vitamin D producer bribed the government idiots to mandate it's inclusion in all milk on the store shelf?

/yes, I despise government intrusion
