Doesn't this apply to all 'Murican media?
Either go full retard, pander to the wingnut-flavour of choice, or both.

9/10. Excellent use of grammar and spelling indicate we may be dealing with a troll with some level of intelligence.

There's a reason why Fox News gets such high ratings and it isn't journalistic integrity.

Pocket Ninja [TotalFark] 2009-11-08 09:57:21 AM
Well, it got this particular moron, and the paper she writes for, a green light on Fark's main page and all the associated thousands of clicks and impotent furor that droolingly obvious trolling so effortlessly generates, so I'm thinking C is a pretty obvious choice.

eddyatwork: There's a reason why Fox News gets such high ratings and it isn't journalistic integrity.

Don't flatter Fox News. If a primetime network show had their ratings, it wouldn't have escaped it's first season without cancellation. They only have high ratings in relation to their competition, and that's mostly because their average viewer is 65 and doesn't have anything better to do other than stew in their own rage juices.

I was especially taken with the author's stance that gays shouldn't be able to get married, which she anchored with "marriage is a universal human institution."

I think we should divide America into zones by IQ, from south to north, then draw a big line at the 85th IQ Point meridian and let all the idiots try to make a go of it for themselves.

We could televise the south-of-the-IQ-border social breakdown for advertising revenue, and sell ammunition at the IQ-85 wall to keep the morons from invading smart America.

Everyone wins!

Kersten has been an obnoxious troll on the Strib's payroll for a few years now. All of her pieces are as awful and disgusting as this one. There's a large market for her particular brand of drivel in Michele Bachmann's district.

5/10, since I actually got annoyed by this. I've been "up north", you'd have to put a lot of people on buses going both ways And what if people are too smart to freeze their ass off?

Exactly. Every single article of hers that I have seen is something along these lines. If it is something that libs (or often just popular culture) likes, then it is terrible. I understand the whole "Let's have varying viewpoints!" but "Retarded Troll" should not be one of them.

Y'know I think this actually explains the missing equation.

For a while it has seemed to me that media quality is degrading. I do not pretend that the news was ever a source of pure, refined journalistic integrity but it seems that not too long ago Fox and Friends, Morning Joe, WSJ Opinion, and Nancy Grace were less prominent and more often relegated to the checkout aisle at the grocery store.

But if "the internet is killing newspapers" and "stealing viewership" from TV news sources then perhaps that would explain their desperate, trolling efforts to get readers. Their quality degrades like the yellow kid because even though they have websites, those do not make the same kind of revenue or get the same kind of viewing as their 24-hour channels.

Perhaps I'm wrong, I don't know how one would do a statistical analysis.

Katherine Kersten has been terrible since long before the Star Tribune was in dire financial straights.

AtomicPenguin 2009-11-08 12:20:10 PM
Marriage would become an artificial institution, bestowing state approval on any adult relationship based on affection and interdependence.

But...isn't that what it is already anyway? If this isn't the case, then marriage as she speaks of it died with arranged bondings; no one marries these days specifically for children, they do it because they love someone and want to be with them.

The divorce rate says she's wrong. The fact that children aren't a requirement of marriage or marriage a requirement for children says she's wrong. That some states have been allowing it despite the fervor against it and have really seen no affect on people like her as a result says she's wrong.

It's been proven throughout history time and again that the most dangerous thing that humankind can perpetrate upon itself is bigotry and intolerance. As a nation we've shown repeatedly that if we combine people of different races, cultures, and beliefs together that we create a stronger nation rather than a weaker one...and that when we discriminate, even when widely accepted, it's diminished us and led us to acts that we've regretted deeply many years later.

Raging Thespian: Kersten has been an obnoxious troll on the Strib's payroll for a few years now. All of her pieces are as awful and disgusting as this one. There's a large market for her particular brand of drivel in Michele Bachmann's district.

That's sad, but it's really true.

Oh, chances are they truly believe what they're saying.

And it's not like the question is completely unreasonable the FIRST time it is asked. The problem is that this question, or argument, has already been used and answered a bazillion times. The writer is like a damaged child, asking "Why can't we have ice cream for dinner?" every night despite having been told time and again, "because it is unhealthy." No knowledge enters, no changes occur within that little coconut on top of her neck.

Only an endless loop of saying the same thing expecting a different answer. The definition of insanity.

lackadaisicalfreakshow: I saw this last night, and I laughed long and hard before I realized she was serious. Does she really think that all marriages have children too?

Not to mention historical marriages were one man, many women; plenty of "traditional" marriages occurred between men and gods, or women and tree spirits, or homosexual couples (it really did happen).

The list of refutation points for this argument is pretty long.

The Star Tribune has seemed to get increasingly more desperate for readership over this last year. I avoid their tent at various festivals just like I avoid T-Mobile kiosks at the mall. The hounding for money is too much to handle.

Uh... you do realize where the Star-Tribune is published, right? If you are talking about latitude and not longitude (as your "meridian" solipsism suggests), your "smart America" is going to be very thin indeed.
