The next 50 years will go alot more smoothly if we just team up with europe and china and subdivide Russia. The longer we wait the tougher it will be.

You don't get to change affiliations merely because you wish to be part of another geo-political entity. The city of Austin is still part of Texas, whether the citizens like it or not. So it goes with South Ossetia.

Of course. I remember the breakup of the U.S.S.R. like it was yesterday. The U.S. unilaterally divided up the entire region with no input from anybody else whatsoever. Good times.

Well, assuming you're American, or British for that matter, a few years ago "we" divided a little country called Serbia. Russia's just playing that "2 can play this game" game.

Bit of a threadjack, but, one day the sister of a friend of mine went to the office he works to give him a package. They're all blond and blue/green-eyed in the family but she got those genes dialed up to 11; anyway, One of the co-workers kinda stared at her, and he went up to my friend.

"Dude, did you just dumped your girlfriend for a swedish girl?"

"... That's my sister"

"Oh... Is she swedish?"

"... *Facepalm*

Kosovo is only recognized by 60 of more than 190 countries. Those being western Europe, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and a few other American satellite states. No Russia, China, India, Brazil, Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, and most importantly Serbia, the country it was taken from.
So...

How many countries recognize both South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states, again? I forget.

Also, I'm pretty sure Georgia doesn't like the two being taken from her.

Franco 2009-11-07 02:38:36 PM
You see Russia, like the United States is, has always been, an expansionist empire. When they stop expanding, influence, militarily, culturally, or economically, they die. That's what happened to the Soviets. That is what is happening to the US now. The US has nowhere to expand into. Bush the lesser expanded it as far as we are able to go militarily. The war on terrorism is a direct response to our culturally and military involvement in the middle east. The economy is imploding because we have nowhere else to build into because the base of of production and globalization has made India, Brazil, and China fairly self sufficient. Russia however is on the rebound after 20 years of collapse and is looking to to regain lost territory. So is China. Central Asia will be a blood bath this century if we don't an active diplomatic role.

Three, actually. But that's not the point. Read Franco's post above. Russia is reemerging as a superpower and is acting belligerently, as superpowers do. The point is, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Are you familiar with the concept of blowback?

TommyDeuce 2009-11-07 02:54:10 PM
So is Russia saying they are worried Georgia might smack Russia's fist with their face again?

/Does Georgia get a say in that?
//Or will Daddy Russia have to tell them twice?

gstefan 2009-11-07 02:55:43 PM
The Russians are setting the story line for their invasion of Georgia in the spring. The Russians are emboldened by a weak American president who apologizes for the US at every turn and is unilaterally disarming the US nucliear arsenal. Our coward in chief is aan negotiator as evidenced by his withdrawing of the plans for a missle shield in Poland with nothing in return, his unilateral disarming of our nuclier forces, and his cave in to the Iranians. The Russians, having seen Obama implement his Afganistan policy in March and having seen the request for more troops go unanswered since August, know a dithering fool when they see one. They will set up a back story and then claim Georgia attacked and then invade just like they did the first time.
