I read that as 'abortion-related impasse blocking a road

Very confused.

PELOSI: Buy a $15,000 Policy or Go to Jail
JCT Confirms Failure to Comply with Democrats' Mandate Can Lead to 5 Years in Jail
Friday, November 06, 2009

Today, Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee Dave Camp (R-MI) released a letter from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) confirming that the failure to comply with the individual mandate to buy health insurance contained in the Pelosi health care bill (H.R. 3962, as amended) could land people in jail. The JCT letter makes clear that Americans who do not maintain "acceptable health insurance coverage" and who choose not to pay the bill's new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.

In response to the JCT letter, Camp said: "This is the ultimate example of the Democrats' command-and-control style of governing - buy what we tell you or go to jail. It is outrageous and it should be stopped immediately."

Key excerpts from the JCT letter appear below:

"H.R. 3962 provides that an individual (or a husband and wife in the case of a joint return) who does not, at any time during the taxable year, maintain acceptable health insurance coverage for himself or herself and each of his or her qualifying children is subject to an additional tax." [page 1]

- - - - - - - - - -

"If the government determines that the taxpayer's unpaid tax liability results from willful behavior, the following penalties could apply..." [page 2]

- - - - - - - - - -

"Criminal penalties

Prosecution is authorized under the Code for a variety of offenses. Depending on the level of the noncompliance, the following penalties could apply to an individual:

• Section 7203 - misdemeanor willful failure to pay is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.

• Section 7201 - felony willful evasion is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years." [page 3]

When confronted with this same issue during its consideration of a similar individual mandate tax, the Senate Finance Committee worked on a bipartisan basis to include language in its bill that shielded Americans from civil and criminal penalties. The Pelosi bill, however, contains no similar language protecting American citizens from civil and criminal tax penalties that could include a $250,000 fine and five years in jail.

"The Senate Finance Committee had the good sense to eliminate the extreme penalty of incarceration. Speaker Pelosi's decision to leave in the jail time provision is a threat to every family who cannot afford the $15,000 premium her plan creates. Fortunately, Republicans have an alternative that will lower health insurance costs without raising taxes or cutting Medicare," said Camp.

According to the Congressional Budget Office the lowest cost family non-group plan under the Speaker's bill would cost $15,000 in 2016.

Ever since FDR and his socialist cronies instituted the 5 day work week, this country has gone down hill. We have encouraged laziness, and our national productivity has never and will never recover until we defeat this socialism and allow honest, hard-working Americans to do an honest day's work for an honest day's wage every day of the week.

Sorry, chicken little, but the Republicans have been releasing so much scare mongering BS lately that even if what you posted is true, NOBODY is going to read it, much less believe it now.

This. I do not have nor do I want health insurance. I've only needed to see a doctor once in the last 20 years and that was for a short lived bout with clinical depression that I'm now cured of. Having to buy health insurance would be a waste for me. A time may come when I'll need it, but I'm a grown adult, not a child, I'm perfectly capable of deciding when I need health insurance. Some would say things along the lines of "what if you suddenly get hurt or sick?" Yeah, there is that possibility, but I'd rather take my chances, however foolish that may seem. My point is that I DON'T WANT IT FORCED ON ME!

I agree, also the 40 hour workweek has to go. Why limit the freedom of people to 40 hours of work before penalizing employers? People are calling for their freedom back. America wants to work honest days of however many hours their respectable employers wish, with no PENALTY for success.

His radical red cousin, TR, is even worse. Setting aside land for recreation? Keeping honest capitalists from harvesting every cubic inch of America? This country will never reach it's full productive potential until every American above the age of 10* is working an honest 18 hour shift every day for a below-subsistence wage, with heroic American troops standing by to shoot anyone who complains.

*Heroic job-creating wealthy capitalists exempted

How do I know whether or not an issue is consistently worthy of my support?

I know when printboy is reduced to communicating entirely in meaningless, non sequitur images because of his sputtering, impotent rage.

Too bad. Want to live in this country? Don't jack up our healthcare costs. It's that simple.

I don't need health insurance because I never get sick and because I'm a robot, who can fly. Don't envy me because I'm immortal. I still haven't found Sarah Connor.

Please, please, please sign a 'do not resuscitate' order and keep it on you at all times.

I sure wouldn't want that emergency room doctor forcing health care on you in the event of tragic mishap...

It's good that you've got that kind of clarity. Last November, Fark Independents® were telling me that there was no difference between the parties and electing Obama would change nothing. Now they're saying he's changing too much...and they are going to change even more next November!

I'm so confused.

Yeah, it does seem foolish. It seems foolish because it is. That's part of the problem right now. If you have a heart attack and get 500,000 in debt, go bankrupt, and can't afford to pay that back, do you know who has to? Yes, all of us, which has put us in this clusterfark of a situation. Single-payer would be ideal, but until that time comes around, quit being such a farking hazard to society. Oh, but Obama and Democrats are the bad guys! Oh, the horror of a semi-functioning and rational healthcare system!
