This is not really news. The news organizations love stories like this and will promote it to make a buck. At the end of the day most people who do these stunts get a job the old fashion way, cultivating your network of contacts.
If this guy whines about gas prices now, I'm guessing he would be the sort to steal colored pencils from work and put 'em on eBay. Put my sig on the "wouldn't hire the loon" petition.

you're right.
if there was only some place where stories like this could be compiled and people could comment on them. that would be nice. and maybe someone will eventually write a book about these not-news stories. i'd buy it get it from the library.

This is fark. I'd say the whole concept of 'not news' fits it well.
Say what you want about the news here, this story is soo lacking in anything even remotely entertaining that it is not farkworthy. Seriously, if you do a news story about a guy with a painted car resume, HAVE A PICTURE OF THE CAR!!!
It makes more sense than the Good Morning America segment in which it was suggested that displaced workers take unpaid internships. I changed the channel after some ex-cheerleader got done cautioning me to make sure the employer knew up front that I didn't expect a job from this unpaid internship.shiat, even indentured servants got *something* for their labors.

I did that once in '96. Told the place that I wanted experience and I'd volunteer one day per week. They thought it was ok, so did the guy that I shadowed - who told me after 2 weeks that he was leaving. He came in and resigned one day, they put me on the payroll the next day.
I'd rather see a resume with someone who did some volunteer time than someone who sat around watching soaps all day. I've had 3 unpaid people work with me over the years, I bought them lunch on the days they worked and even passed computer parts onto them if they needed/wanted them. Also told them to use me as a reference.

THe GMA recommendation was for people to do this full time. No suggestion as to what to eat in the meantime.

If the government allowed me to keep my unemployment benefits while working as an unpaid intern, I'd be down with that...

Not to mention that this would probably DQ you from unemployment benefits.

Beat me by two seconds.
I joined the unemployment train today too, fortunately I saw it coming so I have already spent some time looking. I'm a business analyst with experience and some savings, so I don't have it nearly so bad as some other people out there. Hopefully you've got some kind of cushion too. :/

Living off UI, drawing down my savings, and finding the occasional low-paid temp gig since 2008. :-(

Ah. FT? That I can't see. For meals, even when we had labor from the min security prison I'd ask the cafeteria lady to fix them up with some food.
The segment made me absolutely furious. That's just what unemployed people need--companies expecting that people work for free, with not even a glimmer of hope of a paid job.

Actually, I'd be willing to bet that most of the people who resort to these stunts do so because they don't have a functional network.

But occasionally you do find a gem there. I found a nice opportunity in an industry that's hard to get into. I was surprised, too.
I'm waiting for the callback next week, they've stayed in close contact and have said I'm a strong candidate so here's to hoping. :)
