Arguably one of the best covers ever, it's the Cowboy Junkies covering Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane"

sorry, but their cover of sweet jane is a snooze-fest. the best rendition, is lou reed's solo version on rock 'n' roll animal. that is all.

I have a live MP3 of Lone Justice, then opening for U2, doing it circa 87, and then Bono comes out and duets with girlfriend. he alters the lyrics:

"Standing on the corner, suitcase in my hand
Girl comes to me and says "hey bono, I wanna play with your band."

and then he does that annoying thing he did a lot in the 80s where he physically inserts the microphone inside his chest and breathes IN AND OUT OVER AND OVER SO THE ENTIRE STADIUM CAN HEAR HOW HARD HE'S BREATHING.

Cowboy Junkies are always a snooze-fest, or, more appropriately, a laudanum-laced-dream.

Not all music needs to be peppy. I like their music a lot when I'm in the right mood for it.

Not my style, but they've got a nice sound.

If for no other reason, I'll always love this cover for restoring the "Heavenly wine and roses" bridge that was sliced off this song in its original issue for reasons no one has ever quite figured out (Lou Reed certainly didn't agree to it.)

Now, if you buy "Loaded", the song is back to the way it's supposed to be.

When it was released, I really hated The Trinity Session. But a couple years later I was brought around. Great album, especially considering how it was recorded.

In the same vein, but slightly more peppy (as was the source material)...

Good point.

And for the record, I love Cowboy Junkies. Just not for, like, getting up in the morning.

cover thread?

('cause you know i've a few to share with the class).

including (though by no means limited to) The C.J.'s renditions of:

bob dylan's "license to kill" (new window)

bruce springsteen's "thunder road" (new window)

george harrison's "isn't it a pity" (new window)

u2's "One" (new window)

while I can't find decent versions of them on YouTube, the c.j.'s also do gorgeous covers of patsy cline's "walkin' after midnight" and hank williams' "I'm so lonesome I could cry".

Hell, If you can find it, acquire a copy of the Junkies' e.p. entitled "'neath your covers, part. 1".

Track listing:
1. Thunder Road (Bruce Springsteen)
2. Seventeen Seconds (The Cure)
3. Lungs (Townes Van Zandt)
4. Darkness, Darkness (Jesse Colin Young)
5. Helpless (Neil Young)

If you're on the Junkie's wavelength, you'll love this.

I think Margot nails this one! Sweet Jane & Lou Reed were all about the smack, and she sounds just like a stoned junkie.

The Cowboy Junkies are named after a Townes Van Zandt song (Cowboy Junkies Lament)...Now you know.

I used to work at Timothy's Coffees of The World (Canada's version of Starbucks before Starbucks came here) in the TD Centre in downtown Toronto. And Margot Timmins would regularly come in for a coffee while waiting for her husband who was a banker type guy. She was always really sweet and shy. And brought me tickets for a couple shows.

BTW there is a Timmins, Ontario....Named after Margot and Michael's family.
