Last time I encountered a certain type of supernova I was caught beneath the landslide.

From TFA

Christopher Stubbs of Harvard University has jokingly dubbed these ".Ia" supernovas, because they are one-tenth as bright and last for one-tenth the time as a Type Ia supernova.

If it was one tenth, shouldn't you only move the decimal one place and call it Type I.a?

If "a" were a number maybe. I'll have to check on wikipedia but I'm pretty sure "a" is a letter.

I knew some day they would find it. It was in the sky, wasn't it?

Came here for some Judge Doom. Leaving satisfied.

A supernova huh? Well if it's anything like my old Chevy Nova, it'll light up the night sky.

The rapid dimming of the supernova and certain signatures in its spectrum, such as a strong helium signal, suggest that this star exploded by a previously unknown mechanism

Maybe they should ask this guy about it...

High and squeaky? No way you can describe her voice as "high and squeaky"

(pops, slightly nsfw language)

Hmm. Type Ia supernovae have been known about for years. Because they are caused by such a predictable mechanism they tend to have a fairly consistent spectrum and brightness, which allowed astronomers to measure and compare their redshifts to discover that the expanding universe is actually accelerating.
