I think it's pretty clear that when you poll Americans on the individual issues most of their views would fall into the center or even center-left category.

It's the village that can't get it out of their heads that America isn't conservative. Probably because the Chris Mathews of the world see themselves as regular guys and they're conservative so everyone else must be.

My local network affiliates come out of Philly, and during the last two weeks all I saw during breaks in the football and baseball games was how much of a dick Corzine was. Christie ran your typical negative campaign chock full of lies and hyperbole and exaggerations and innuendos.

Good god, you'd be crazy to see Democrats picking up 2 House seats Tuesday -- what with Obama abdicating his throne in shame and what not.

Let's break it down!

New Jersey: incredibly unpopular incumbent, who nevertheless managed to do 10 points better than his approval rating.

Virginia: McDonnell ran an excellent campaign. He offered solutions, instead of complaining about "liberals", "socialism", and how health care reform will destroy our freedoms (whatever that means).

Both governors-elect ran - and won - on local issues (mostly jobs and the economy).

NY-23, the headline race for the GOP, and the first public test of their new ideology: Lost a seat that had been solidly theirs for a century and a half by 6 points.

If the GOP attempts to run on an ideology-based platform, like in NY-23, instead of a solutions-based one like in Virginia, they will be eaten alive at the polls in 2010. The Democrats in 2006, and again in 2008, ran on solutions-based platforms. If you go way back to 1994, and the "Contract For America" that Newt Gingrich and that class ran on, they ran on a solution-based platform.

That is the lesson that should be taken from these elections, but the GOP base seems to be moving in the exact opposite direction. Voters want to hear what YOU are going to do for them, not how shrilly you can scream about your political opponents.
