No, it's not the whole accent that it starts to pick up, just inflections and pitches common to a particular language. The whole Massachusetts "r" impediment wouldn't come into play at all.

Linguists might disagree on what "useless" is here. First language acquisition is a very active field, and affects various practical things like speech therapy and second language acquisition (which in turn goes into language pedagogy) as well as neurolinguistics which can help with therapy for people with aphasia.
It's interesting to see how far back it actually goes, I knew that within a few months (I think three) of birth, babies stop differentiating between all sounds and have keyed in on the native speech sounds. I didn't know they were doing it from inside.

This. Education will take that accent right out of you. Exposure to alcohol will bring it right back, though. At least, this has been my experience.

Yeah, language acquisition is completely farking useless. Never mind that apart from the impact it has in linguistics and language teaching, it's also one of the best way to find out how the brain works and learns.

Let me guess, you're an engineer?

Depends on your perspective. If you and I can't tell the difference between an aspirated and unaspirated [p] and a Hindi speaker can, and you and I can tell the difference between [l] and [r] and a Korean speaker can't, but a baby can tell the difference between all four sounds, who's not differentiating?

How come Arnold Schwarzenegger, despite living in the US for decades, still has such a strong access, but Madonna "acquired" a British (emphasis on the ish) accent 26 minutes after getting off the plane in London?

wyrlss: Linguists might disagree on what "useless" is here.

More fundamentally, how cognition works is far from understood and starting as early as possible is pushing the frontier.

I doubt this will get an IgNobel, but if it does, it will be one of the 'backhanded honor' ones, not one of the 'outright mockery' ones. Ignobel is all about the lulz really.

Bad_Seed Ah, just read your post, same point my bad.

I don't have an accent. Neither does my mother or one of my brothers. My other brother and my father both do.

Tangent, but I always found it interesting that I can clearly understand my mother who has a heavy Caribbean accent, and my father who has a heavy New York/Italian accent, but when it comes to their respective brothers, sisters, etc I'm all, lolwat?
I know I know, cool story bro, but I'm somewhat fascinated by language acquisition, linguistics, etc etc.

Because English is her native language and Austrian is Arnold's. It's the same reason why my friend from MD now says, "wicked" since he moved to Boston. You start talking like the people around you.
