1)The dog is partially blind
2)She's not aggressive
3)The dog's poor eyesight caused her to accidentally bite her owner's finger
4)The owner should have gotten medical attention, especially since the dog bite went through the skin down to the bone

I know women who would feed that dog steak for the rest of it's life.

Exactly. The old husband was weak and useless anyway if a little wound killed him like that. Good riddance.

At least the dog won't have to live with knowing that it caused his death. It certainly wasn't intentional.

He died from an infection due to his refusal to seek medical treatment.

Of course it was the dog who dissuaded him from seeking help with its persuasive arguments of "arf arf".

Hope she does keep the dog.

Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude: He died from an infection due to his refusal to seek medical treatment.

Our late beagle bit our son out of the blue one day. The dog had been good with our son before that but in the months before we noticed age quickly creeping up on him as he started bumping into things and occasionally had a confused look (aside from his normal confused look). Certainly not something to put him to sleep over.

It was a quick nip but it broke the skin. We cleaned it and put our son to bed but the next morning his hand was all inflamed. We took him to the pediatrician and he had a nasty infection that took some super strong antibiotics to clear (its been 6 or 7 years and I don't recall what we used).

As to the dog, we did put him to sleep about 4 months later by which time he was blind and becoming incontinent.

{sarcasm}But we shouldn't let "facts" get in the way of understanding that THIS IS DANGEROUS ANIMAL AND IT MUST BE KILLED IMMEDIATELY.{/sarcasm}

Once back in their holiday cottage, the Sewells searched for antiseptic but could not find any.

They used a sticking plaster to cover the wound.

But six days later, they became increasingly worried as Mr Sewell complained of feeling hot and experiencing 'strange dreams'.

I think the lesson here is obvious. If your nice dog accidentally nips you, forgive him, but don't overlook the fact that he was probably noshing out of the litter box a few minutes earlier.

When an animal bites you, you're supposed to scrub that wound out thoroughly. And really keep an eye on it. If an animal bit me to the bone, you can believe I'd go to a medical professional.

I know somebody who got a bone infection from being bitten by their cat. Also my friend who worked at a veterinary clinic said they keep antibiotics on hand for the staff in case of being bitten by a patient. (Maybe not technically legal but hey they're working under veterinarians).

\dear departed cat scratched and bit me pretty good on the leg when I tried to stop her from beating up another cat
\\I scrubbed that little puncture wound until it bled, no infection
\\\years later the puncture is gone but the scratch scar is still there

Uh...the dog was half blind, it was an accident, and it was blood poisoning.

In other words, the dog didn't mistake his throat for a chew-toy.

NannyStatePark 2009-11-06 10:26:09 AM
Why in the hell should anyone put this dog down? That is ridiculous. They might consider some dentistry, however.

Old guy was a dumbass. He didn't find disinfectant? I'll bet there was booze, or perfume, or mouthwash, ect. somewhere in that house.

Nogale 2009-11-06 10:26:44 AM
Why "Stupid," submitter? The bite was clearly accidental. The husband knew that it had gone through to the bone but the family didn't have any antiseptic on hand, so he just slapped a bandaid on and went about his business.

I think the incident might have warranted a trip to the local drugstore (chemist).

But the family has lost their husband and father - why should they lose their dog, as well?

BenJammin 2009-11-06 10:27:22 AM
Sad but the fault lies in ignoring such a serious bite. Down to the bone is not a nip and it needs to be treated to guard against infection, especially when it is from a non-sterile source.

Not to be heartless, but who doesn't get medical attention, or at least clean up the wound, after a dog bite? Given the opportunity, 99% of dogs will eat carrion, and 75% will chow down on their own shiat. That doesn't exactly make for a clean wound.

I got a minor bite while helping my wife (a veterinarian) sedate one of our dogs so that we could sew her up after she was attacked by another dog. I probably spent 20 minutes cleaning up the bite with H2O2, alcohol, and finished off with Betadine scrub. Got a tetanus shot the next morning and (after the doc got nervous) a radiograph to make sure the bite hadn't punctured the radiocarpal joint capsule.

And?

You either can't tell a nip from a bite, your dog had some kind of bacterial infection that was clearly exacerbating what sounds like dementia from old age, or your kid has the immune system of bubble boy.

Mrs Sewell, 53, said of the incident: 'It was not vicious. It was just bad eyesight and tragic, but you have to accept it and move on.'

That's the spirit! Cheerio! When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. And when your vicious dog mauls your husband in a fit of rabid rage, you whistle a little tune, click your heels, and keep your chin up! No need to get down about it, love.

As an uninsured someone whose distant-neighbor's untrained, unsocialized dog got loose, charged several houses down the middle of the street and attacked my dog and me unprovoked from behind, drawing blood, and now has since spent a good chunk of time disinfecting and worrying about a small bite wound, then filing complaint paperwork and contesting the notion that "the first one is free," you better believe I am getting a kick out of these replies.

/ Minor bite, but drew blood, so required to report, not just being a wuss
// Biatch has the gall not even to apologize; lucky I'm not some dainty 9yo neighborhood kid with a purse-dog
/// Anyone know a good ambulance chasing lawyer?

Spoonfed'sBuddy 2009-11-06 10:34:22 AM
Mr Sewell felt the bite go through to his bone, but did not think it serious enough to seek treatment.

Sorry man, your fault for not going to a Doc over that one. It's almost as if it were too much trouble to go to one in the UK...

SFSailor 2009-11-06 10:35:45 AM
Litig8r: but who doesn't get medical attention

Uhhh, uninsured, unemployed, broke people who don't want to go hundreds/thousands of dollars in debt to go to a docinthebox for a shot and instead will just wait to make sure it heels? (Luckily (for me, and the dog owner) it did.) Maybe it's just me.

Litig8r: or at least clean up the wound

Ah. Ok, read the whole sentence before posting. ; ) Mmmmm H2O2, iodine, neosporin and a life history of immunity-building creative self-injury!

That is exactly how my wife would respond if one of our cats somehow murdered me. She might throw in a "he had it coming" as well.

I am suprised that someone who is dumb enough not to clean a dog bite that he could feel "went down to the bone" managed to live as long as he did.

Took Darwin a while to catch up with this guy.

U don't need an ambulance chaser. Ur neigbor was in the wrong, and u have an actual case. Control ur pet or deal with the consequences, and any medical care redered to you as a result of this bite is the responsibility of the dog owner to pay.

Old story. Tried to bathe my orange tabby, and he bit my finger with a puncture that went to the bone. Went to Urgent Care and got a shot after a day or two...damn finger swelled up to twice its normal size.

//I sorta had it comin.' Heh
