After my son was born, the hospital sent us a bill for $49,000.

They were only off by a factor of 98.

Oh my total bill was originally over $70K, they took a flat pay of $15,000. Thing is, financial services(who I dealt with) is located in the hospital, billing is off site.

Is there no belief left in personal responsibility? Would it have been so difficult for the patient to let the hospital know he was dead?

They can't...they have to treat anybody in a life threatening state.

Once they stabilize ya, they can send you to the public e-room.

By letting him die? That should pretty much ensure that a patient never comes back.

Apparently not as much as you'd think, since they had to command him not to come back once he was dead.

I sincerely hope that public health care goes through. I've been eligible for health benefits at my current job for over a month now and they still won't give me them.

Shadowknight 2009-11-05 11:44:36 PM
I am very much annoyed by this. The last thing anyone should have to worry about when needing medical help is the bill. They shouldn't have to weigh the pros and cons of "Hey, I was just in a car accident where I cracked the windshield with my head, maybe I should go see a doctor."

And the absolute LAST thing anyone should have to deal with when grieving for a dead son is an extraordinarily high bill from the hospital he died in.

Riche 2009-11-06 12:02:58 AM
From TFA: In addition to documenting the 5 minutes of emergency room work done, the envelope also included a letter to "the patient," saying Scott Hawkins was considered indigent and shouldn't come back for further treatment.

Did I read that wrong, or is the hospital charging $30,000 for 5 minutes worth of (failed) work?

I thought it was death panels, but you're right. I missed those. If people are allowed to die more quickly, especially fatties, our health care costs will go down, right? I'm tired of subsidizing fatasses and smokers, they don't deserve healthcare because they made a choice to be fat and smoke.

Damn straight I'm a farking socialist, if by socialist you mean somebody who thinks the wealthiest nation on the planet ought to be able to provide a minimal level of health care for all its citizens. I think not having people dying in the streets is a laudable expression of the highest ideals of the founders, okay? If you think that makes me a socialist, so be it. I think it makes me a patriot, and I'll take my genuinely Christian values over your blood-chilling Randian claptrap any day.

Seems a typical clerical error rather than them actually expecting payment.

You still get the occasional incidence in the UK where parents of dead children are threatened with court action because their kid wasn't in class.

People sometimes make mistakes putting info into databases! More at 10!

This should have at least come up in the daily death panel meeting in the basement of the hospital.

THIS

Can anyone enlighten me as to why medical care costs so much? Could they just be making everything a factor of 10 more expensive than it really is?

Came to make a deadbeat joke. I guess the student isnt the only one who has been beaten.

This is outrageous. That this hospital would intentionally and maliciously send the bill to the parents instead of the insurance company is bad enough, but sarcastically taunting them Fark-style over their son's death is unforgiveable.

WarningMayContainPeanuts 2009-11-06 05:02:33 AM

etobian 2009-11-06 05:05:48 AM
If the college student was 18 or older, he would have been responsible for his own bills. So why would his parents be on the hook for the $30k?

etobian: If the college student was 18 or older, he would have been responsible for his own bills. So why would his parents be on the hook for the $30k?

Because in America's current completely broken healthcare system, hospitals are more interested in making money than treating patients. (I bet he'd have lived in a French ER.) They're probably trying to get whatever they can from both the parents and the insurance company.
