I'm all for any kind of tax cut really, but this is kind of stupid. The economy does suck, if there's any income tax cuts, they should apply to everyone, not just pet owners.

/would totally claim like $1,200 for 2009 between the cat and the dog

The difference being, the things they reward with tax credits are considered to be beneficial to the society at large. I fail to see how Mister Fuzzbutt Ignatious von Mergatroid over there benefits anyone other than his owner.

Maybe Fluffikins should take some personal responsibility and stop sleeping with the tomcats in the back alley. Us taxpayers have to foot the bill for her litters, not to mention have to wait in the pet ER for hours while vets treat them for the sniffles. FIX OLD NO NEW.

If I really felt like being a dick I'd go into some Clunkers thread and pick a choice quote from you praising a program that gave people GIANT FISTFULS OF CASH to buy a new version of something they already owned.

But I'm tired.

And like I mentioned, I like anything that gives me back tax money, so I'd hate to do something like that and have people think I was against the Clunker program.

Old News is is Old (new window)

This story shows why the Republicans fail at leadership. If they were fiscal conservatives they would look to the overall financial responsibility. Cutting taxes on anything and everything because someone has a whim is stupid idea.

If one ran a business that way, lowering prices at random below the point that one could pay the bills, they would go out of business and be deemed a failure. Republicans do it and consider themselves heroes.

Not that Democrats have been better at it, but at least Clinton could balance a budget.

OK, now I get it. They want more people to start buying pet insurance to swell up the industry. And since it's a Democratic majority it'll be under their watch. Eventually it'll pass, and in the next chapter of this story, some tard GOPer will try and say that the government wants to insure people pets too. And not your pets, you'd be paying for other peoples pets insurance too! Socialist! And next time kitty gets sick they put him to death, like yer grammas! Fascist!

Is Thaddues McCotter willing to pay for this pet subsidy out of his own pocket? No? Well, then I guess we'll have to raise taxes to pay for it.

Verrai 2009-11-06 01:37:15 AM
Also, should have said this, but I love cats. I really do. I will probably have at least one once my life settles down. But this tax credit is completely ridiculous. Pets are expensive, yes, but there's no reason to encourage ownership of pets. Next we'll deduct the money you spend on TV purchases and maintenance, too. Same principle.

The sheer hypocrisy of it coming from a moron like McCotter just makes it ten times worse. At least coming from, I don't know, Robert Wexler, it would be ideologically consistent.

I think gays will benefit from the deduction as well. After all, they have those little dogs that they carry around with them. It is a silly bill though. It just adds the the complicated mess that is our tax code.

Can I get a clarification. Is this a tax credit or a deduction?

It's my understanding that the two differ in meaning. The first being a direct amount reduced from your tax bill (ie owe 10k but have the tax credit of 3.5k for Fluffy, end result 6.5k tax bill.) A deduction results in reducing the level of amount of taxable income (income of 85k, less 3.5 for fluffy for a final taxable income of 82.5k) One would be akin to a direct subsidy of 3.5k the other a slight reduction in tax rate. Is this distinction correct? The bill suggests a deduction, but I've heard people claim its a credit elsewhere. I figured I could get a clarification from a Fark Expert (tm.)

The transition was government-mandated, so that misses the point. If we forced everyone to kill their current pets and buy new ones, a tax credit on the new purchase would also be in order.

Thank GOD this proposal is just for a deduction and not a tax credit like subby wrote, or it would really be insane.

But still...who can justify the loss of billions in revenue every year for what is essentially a luxury. Yeah, you heard me you GOP f*ckers...if health care for poor people is a privilege, then owning a dog, cat, or marmoset sure as f*ck counts as a luxury too!

Sabyen91: Not a credit...and who cares. Sure it is kinda hypocritical for Repubs to do this but really, who cares?

Where is the hypocrisy? IIRC the tax code allows for tax deductions for human medical expenses. So it can't be that the GOP is allowing for one thing for humans and another for animals. John McCain's platform on Health Care reform was largely based upon allowing individuals to take a tax deduction on the cost of obtaining medical insurance in the same way employers do, thus reducing the focus on employer based insurance.

What the GOP is doing is consistent with some of their earlier stances. It's also consistent with them being unserious in times when the grownups should be talking about more important things.

On the bright side, it would result in me having some tax savings for my puppy who almost died. Then again, I didn't spend that money because of a potential tax deduction, and it was worth every penny.

The hypocrisy comes in when they are introducing tax credits for pet health care and dead set against human health care.
