I wish I had known this before today. I would have loved to go and see that. Mr. Rogers rocked.

Meet Us at the Stick [TotalFark] 2009-11-05 07:33:42 PM
I got to meet Mr Rogers working at a grocery store in Oakland (I guess it was technically within walking distance of the QED studios) back in 89/90.

First, everyone in the store old/young, black/white, didn't matter stopped as was "That's Mr. Rogers"

Next, he was as kind and polite in person as he was on television.

Just a good man.

Wow really? And this weekend? And free to boot? Wow I might take my daughter to that, actually. Thanks for the heads-up on that.

I loved Mr. Rogers. Meet Us at the Stick, you're so lucky to have met him; I have heard the same from others who had that same good fortune, that he was genuinely a kind soul.

That was very interesting, thanks for the link.

Mr. Rogers is Evil (^). Oh WTF??

We have a Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

But Mister Rogers gets a single weekend.

Go figure.

This was a man who genuinely thought of the children, and if there were more Fred Rogers and fewer panicky parents, reactionary spokesmen, and bureaucratic school administrators, society would be a lot less farked up and we'd have a lot less material on this site.

I'd love to see that, but I'm afraid I'm be a teary eyed mess the whole time I was there.

I got to go to the WQED studios some time ago for an event, and got to drink next to King Friday's castle and X's Tree.

The castle's a whole lot bigger on TV, but the tree seemed to be the right size.

It's nice that they have the train, but it would have been better to see Mr. Rogers himself encased in plexiglass in Latrobe, PA.

When Fred Rogers died, the town of Pittsburg celebrated him in a wonderful way.

The thing that makes me sad is knowing that a man like Fred Rogers could not survive today.

How could a man love children so much and not be a secret pedophile?

That's what is sick and wrong about our society. And a comment about how much we truly hate our children. We can't stand that anyone could love them for being children.

RemyDuron 2009-11-05 11:35:10 PM
Westboro protested Mr. Rogers because he wouldn't denounce homosexuality (they thought his "Be happy with yourself" mantra was too faggy, apparently). When I read that I knew they were real life trolls.

Fox went against him too? What assholes.

Sense of entitlement and self esteem are NOT the same thing. I've always been terribly anxious/neurotic and have never had any self esteem, but I was still a spoiled brat as a child and I'm an arrogant bastard today. Feeling terrible about yourself leads to self pity which leads to thinking your life is too hard and that you should be given more. If you feel good about yourself you feel you can overcome the challenges you meet and you don't desire so much for yourself.

Now, the idea that no child should ever get a bad grade or ever lose anything is asinine. That, IMO, is never what Mr. Rogers preached. He was about loving yourself and loving others and all and all the most Christian (in a positive sense) man I know of in the entertainment business. Kids need to learn how to lose gracefully and how to deal with criticism, but too many people seem to take anything but a torturous childhood as "coddling."

Fred is a hero. His production company, is a commercial company that is, and I am not making this up, full of decent people who are honest and creative.
I'm honored to be from the same town as Fred and George Romero.

Well to be fair that IS why pedophiles love them.

I love Mr. Rogers so much. He was like another grandparent during my childhood.

Here's a cool list of Mr. Rogers facts from mental_floss.

Years ago there was a story on NPR about two car thieves that jacked a ride then found scripts and paperwork inside indicating the car they stole belonged to Mr. Rogers.

Apparently the thieves thought better of the caper, washed the car and returned it lovingly to the driveway of Mister Fred with a note of apology.

No one farks with the sneaker man in Pittsburgh.

See that, kids? That is power. The ability to defeat your adversary without raising your voice, without threatening, without pleading.

Except that he loves even the unattractive ones that even parents barely love.

Seriously, no one would accept him as a neighbor now, even though as Homer said, if our neighborhood was made of FlandersRogers, we wouldn't need Heaven, we'd already be there.

And that's sad. He's everything great and tolerant about Christianity.

This is testimony Mr. Rogers gave before the Supreme Court that defended the Beta Max VCR, which the court sited in allowing the devices, thus giving us DVD, Blu Ray and DVR today.

Some public stations, as well as commercial stations, program the "Neighborhood" at hours when some children cannot use it ... I have always felt that with the advent of all of this new technology that allows people to tape the "Neighborhood" off-the-air, and I'm speaking for the "Neighborhood" because that's what I produce, that they then become much more active in the programming of their family's television life. Very frankly, I am opposed to people being programmed by others. My whole approach in broadcasting has always been "You are an important person just the way you are. You can make healthy decisions." Maybe I'm going on too long, but I just feel that anything that allows a person to be more active in the control of his or her life, in a healthy way, is important.[22]

Also, FARK Fox news for slandering Mr. Rogers.

No, the subtle misspellings of commonly misspelled words are what MAKES the troll.

Also acceptable are their they're there, thorough through throughout thought, and various misplacements of the apostrophe.

Why am I getting the image of Pee Wee Herman picking himself up from the pavement saying "I MEANT to do that..."?

Fred Rogers meant a lot to me in my childhood, and re-watching his work in clear-eyed adulthood has shown that what he did stands up--did then, did now.

He was a wonderful person, and I was lucky to be electronically acquainted with him.

Thanks for the link, jonasborg. I must admit I was temporarily overwhelmed by all the dust in this room which somehow found its way into my eye.

You have to sit through a bit of Tim Robbins overselling the moment, but Fred's address is well worth it.

Yup, Mr. Rogers was superb.

I don't get what's up with the postman names I run into, though. "Mr. McFeely"? and "Mr. Sprinkles" from Mrs. Doubtfire? Disturbing.
