Let's not leave out the co-conspirators. I was always partial to Thomas Catesby and Thomas Percy.

Voilà!
In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.
Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

"In 1606, Parliament established November 5 as a day of public thanksgiving. Today, Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated across Great Britain every year on November 5 in remembrance of the Gunpowder Plot. As dusk falls, villagers and city dwellers across Britain light bonfires, set off fireworks, and burn effigies of Guy Fawkes, celebrating his failure to blow Parliament and James I to kingdom come."

Funny, I always thought you limey Brits celebrated it because of his attempt to blow up Parliament.

Nope, M.A.S.K taught me about him too, but I am pretty sure I had heard about him while in CCD, I just ignored it until Matt Trakker told me about it.

It's what certain people try and make it over here. Some of my more militant conservative family members are celebrating the attempt, rather than the failure.

A documentary in 2008 rebuilt the 1605 Parliament building and simulated what would have happened given the amount of gunpowder, how long it had been sitting there, dampness, placement of the dignitaries, construction of the building, etc.

Suffice to say, not a whole lot was left.

Hear hear!

I am no Catholic, but I support his attempt to end hostile Protestant treatment of the Catholics; when you become just like your enemy, there is no difference. The Protestants started to do the very same thing that the Catholics had done, and they deserved a wake-up call.

Jefferson was the next Guy; his quotes attest to this.

I grew up in Newfoundland and one year my parents told me we were going to their friend's place for Guy Fawkes day. When I got there I had no idea what was going on but there was already a huge bonfire burning and somebody told me they were burning Fawkes in effigy. It actually took me quite some time to find out what burning someone in effigy meant...I thought they were actually burning somebody. I was young and stupid then.

Do they idolise his religous faniticusm(SP) or do they simply like that they were stickin it to a church? Regardless of what other crazy belifes he had?

I mean generaly folks support one aspect of a historcal figure, not the figure as a whole.... but meh, my way is not as inflamatory, so lets stick with your comment.

You know who else tried to stick it to a religion?

And he actually started to carry out his solution. So why aren't they wearing masks of him? And he loved the Catholic church, too, just like Fawkes.

Same guy, different mustache.

I still don't get the playing of Fawkes as a hero at the start of the "V for Vendetta" film. He was part of a plot by a minority to murder hundreds and forcibly overthrow the government. I'm quite sure the same reaction wouldn't be the same if in 300 years, someone starts a film with a vignette about Osama Bin Ladin wanting to overthrow America in the same way.

The difference is that Osama didn't have people trying to kill him and persecuting him for his beliefs first. The Catholics were retaliating for Protestants basically becoming the very thing they hated, doing unto others unlike what the Bible told them to do. Was he right for wanting to commit murder? No. Was he right for wanting to fight back against oppression? Yes.

Bin Laden is a coward; Guy Fawkes, however flawed, was a very brave man. This is coming from a Protestant.

I agree in theory, but in this case he would have been replaced by a Catholic King. We Protestants prefer it when we are persecuting Catholics to them persecuting us eg when Henry VIII did it = good, when Bloody Mary did it = very bad.

jaerik: Suffice to say, not a whole lot was left.

I am skeptical, but note my caveats:
1) I am hardly a demolitions expert.
2) I should probably watch all the videos but I don't have time right now.
3) Steal underpants.
4) I am not familiar with the details of the legend of Guy Fawkes.

Why is the source of the explosion in the middle of the building rather than under it? I presume he didn't pack in one ton of gunpowder on the ground floor of parliament building.

You claim they took into account environmental factors, but the explosion seemed pretty controlled in terms of the pace of the detonation. Did they use present day technology (e.g. det cord) to tie the gunpowder sources together, or did they use whatever he would have, if he chained them together at all? Or was the progression of the explosion natural, merely what happens when you blow up one barrel: the others chain on their own, at that speed, just from presssure and heat?

/Wish I had time to learn me some book learning.
