Denial, basically. It's either that or accept the fact that they're a joke.

/"But, but, but, we're cowboys, rugged individualists!"
"Then how come your police arrest people for drinking in bars?"

It sucks in Texas for the most part, but our gun laws make it worth it somewhat

Unless an act of violence upon an innocent person is being prevented by it, any act of force by the government on private citizens is excessive.

More people should find themselves looking the other way by pure chance if or when some accident or other befalls law enforcement officers. Maybe they would be more reluctant to use force to get their rocks off.

I had a friend who worked as a bartender in Texas for a while. He told me (and I have no independent verification for this, so take it for what it's worth) that the TABC prohibited keeping any sort of weapon behind the bar. No crowbars, no baseball bats, etc. Even mortars and pestles were prohibited under the law. Knives had to be less than six inches in length.

But the law apparently defined firearms as something other than weapons for this purpose. It was perfectly acceptable to keep a shotgun behind the bar.

Why would he need to do that? Isn't that the responsibility of the checkout person?

erewhon 2009-11-05 03:28:34 PM
No government agency should be permitted to determine if it has violated the law. Police included. It seems insane that this happens.

Hell, no agency of the government that has any interest in a situation should be able to investigate or abstain from investigating another agency. Case in point, prosecuting attorneys that depend on the cooperation of the police shouldn't be in the position of investigating the wrongdoing of police. Nuts. Totally nuts.

As a gay, and a former Texan, I am shocked, SHOCKED by the behavior of the TABC. Or not. Most Texas state agencies are corrupt from the top down. TABC is no exception. Nobody really pays attention to it besides themselves, so until they piss off a large group of the (Republican) voting constituency they can get away with pretty much whatever they damn well feel like.

You went to school by choice in Denton? One of the few places I refuse to go in Texas:
1. Waco (Crazy Baptists)
2. Lubbock (Tech fans and the stds)
3. Denton (no explanation needed, it just sucks)

From what I understand, supposedly "libertarian' Texas has a shiat ton of law enforcement agencies and they hand out authority like Halloween candy.

When place such as the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners has arrest power, is it a surprise that power is abused?

Calling a firearm a weapon in Texas is like calling a pair of jeans or a bra a weapon.

My girlfriend has some gay friends, both men and women, and they are flat out the most violent, belligerent drunks you will ever meet. Scary, unbelievably sadistic. In all honesty, if I had a choice on which bar to raid, I'd probably go with a Texan roughneck bar before a gay bar.

And women in Texas are more likely to always have the former rather than the two latter.

I see. I guess that explains the old Texas saying, "never bring a shotgun to a mortar-and-pestle fight."

Yeah, that is flat-out made up baloney. One good indication that you are in a safe neighborhood is the presence of a gay bar. I hate to go around calling anyone a liar but, well, here we are.

I know a few alcoholic lesbians they are not very violent but tend one of them tended to get naked and wander around the backyard and sleep in the guest bedroom and cuddle whoever was sleeping in there

Gay guys that are sadistic when drunk? I think you are confusing "violent and sadistic" with having a S&M fetish that shows up when they drink.
